I liked it, but certainly no masterpiece like the first two movies in the Cornetto trilogy. It doesn't have as much Edgar Wright style as other Edgar Wright movies do. Songs were okay in some points, very good in others. Lead is great, Jamie Foxx probably second best.
I don't do personal nominations. If this got anything in real Oscars, which it will not, like, an editing nomination at best.
AMA?

While I say editing nom, that is certainly out of the question. Remember that scene in Hot Fuzz where he's traveling out of London by train? Nothing in this movie is as flashy.

David Poland seems to think this is the first film of the year with a shot for picture nomination; not sure if he's trolling or being serious.

(I don't think any of the three will, but Baby has the least shot.) ----- I said I liked Jamie, Hamm is fine too. None of them get that much to do though honestly. Elgort is a fine lead though.

In order to prevent another Oscarsowhite, they might nominate "Get Out", it helps that the film has great reviews and was a huge box office success.

I feel like they woykd go for mudbound in a situation feasibly as well. "Mudbound" is Netflix so it's DOA. If Netflix operated like Amazon where they actually release their film's theatrically for more than a week and to way more theaters it would have a chance, but AMPAS is not ready to embrace a streaming film.

I saw it last night. It may very well be my new favorite film of the year. People weren't kidding about the soundtrack and how well it syncs up with damn near everything. I dug the whole cast, but Hamm and Foxx stood out for me. And I like how it isn't too similar to Wright's other films in tone but still maintains his fast-paced style. I could see it getting at least a sound mixing/editing nom.

It's funny that you mention that editing "should be out of the question" (unless it was a typo and you meant to say not out of the question) because I think this might just be some of the best editing I've ever seen. It's literally an entire film synced up to a soundtrack, and while it's not as flashy or quick-cutting as Edgar Wright movies tend to be - making this the least Edgar Wright-y Edgar Wright movie to date - it's still got his trademark all over it.
It's basically like if an entire film were the "Don't Stop Me Now" scene from Shaun of the Dead and it's fantastic. Even more than that, it feels like an ode to classic heist films, such as The Italian Job, or famous Steve McQueen car chase films, like Bullitt, without ever making it so on-the-nose. The opening scene, in particular, is about as Edgar Wright as the movie gets, but it leads into one of the best car chase scenes I think I've ever witnessed. Deserves Oscar nominations for both editing and especially sound mixing. The first truly great film I've seen this year. Albeit, I'm a die-hard Edgar Wright fan and I think he has an unbelievable directorial vision (just re-watched Scott Pilgrim yesterday in preparation as well and couldn't believe how different, but how utterly inventive both films were). He's essentially a movie nerd making films for movie nerds, but he doesn't have the trademark arrogance that people like Tarantino or Rodriguez have.
As a side note, I'm genuinely surprised by how good Ansel Elgort was here. I'm in the minority that sufficiently liked him in Fault in Our Stars, but I loathe his off-screen personality and don't think there's much talent there whatsoever. But he genuinely surprised me and steals the show. Jamie Foxx is a close second, as you said, mainly because of that scene in the diner, and Jon Hamm is pretty good for what little he has to do, but the one I wanted to see more of (and I'm surprised we didn't considering the amount of him in the trailer) was Jon Bernthal. He literally has five minutes, and he had potential to be the MVP of the movie (and I say this as someone who genuinely doesn't like Bernthal as an actor).
Will be re-watching this sometime in the future, so I'll make a firm judgment then, but right now it sits as my #1 of the year with the only thing close being Get Out.

Freaking loved it and I was worried too going into it (mainly because of the lead. As the film started, I thought the dude that played Baby was going to be such a hipster /bro/dbag but he turned out to be really likable & admirable. Apparently he is like that in real life though lol . And the soundtrack blows GOTG Vol 2 's soundtrack out of the water. Literally puts it to shame imo .
Wright's direction was so on point here and the co stars all did a top notch job.
solid 8/10

"Stop feeding me lines from Monsters Inc. It pisses me off." Probably staying my favorite line of the year, though Foxx was MVP for me.

Idk if I'll get around to this. I like Edgar Wright but I truly, truly can't stand Ansel Elgort. I think he's extremely insufferable, more so than anybody in his age-group.

Never been thaaaat big on Edgar Wright (SOTD 8/10, HF 7.5/10, SPVTW 7/10) but this was fantastic and just so much fun. Up there as far as best editing ever and Sound design of course. Also Lily James

Loved every bit of it! Edgar Wright is indeed a genius and it's amazing how well synced the music is here. I agree with cheesecake that the story is kinda too basic and we've seen this plenty of times before but when you get something as entertaining and fun as this, it can be overlooked. Acting-wise, they're all pretty amazing but the MVP for me is surprisingly Elgort. Lily James was lovely as usual. Overall, one of the coolest movies ever!!

An action musical delight done in pure Edgar Wright fashion. I loved how he synced music to conversations, gunfire, chases etc,m show why he is a master showman. Editing is not too flashy this time. I liked the sound track but i'm not much into pop music, so this area is unfamiliar to me. Would've been perfect if only the story resonated more with me.

Thought it was solid. Storyline was too basic for me but the sound design was aces.

Anyone find Doc's change of the heart in the 3rd act a little hard to believe?
