Anyone find Doc's change of the heart in the 3rd act a little hard to believe? he is a guy who seems to value his history with Baby He threw that out the window when he threatened him and "everybody he loves"

****SPOILERS BELOW****
Drive it ain’t, but Edgar Wright’s latest is a fun toe-tapping romp that’s sweet without turning saccharine, and yet it doesn’t lack for high-octane action. Wright deftly lenses his film, weaving through Atlanta traffic (a nightmare, as I can attest) with as much skill as his leading character. Speaking of, Ansel Elgort was finally good in something. He was reminiscent of a softer, more baby-faced Taron Egerton. Lily James was a lovely love interest, her high-wattage smile livening every scene she was in. The baddies Baby hooks up with were mostly solid, with special plaudits going to Kevin Spacey’s Doc. I also really liked Eiza González, and wish she had been swapped out as the final villain of the piece. No disrespect to Jon Hamm, who was good, but I think González’s ferocity would’ve been more compelling. I gotta say, though, I really wasn’t a fan of what Jamie Foxx was laying down. This performance was a more outré, erratic take on his Motherfucker Jones from Horrible Bosses minus 95% of the gravitas. They should’ve just kept Jon Bernthal, who played the same archetype without going overboard. I also don’t think Doc would’ve been okay with the body count Foxx kept racking up, even aside from his gunrunners. The real star of the film, though, is the soundtrack, and accordingly, the editing. I wouldn’t quite call it a masterpiece, as there are a couple of rough patches in the film’s middle act as well as some glaring redundancies, but I’d definitely go see it again.

Spacey is one of the more scary villains(keeping tabs on Baby while threatening Baby in the most deadpan matter) in a while until....when he isn't. I didn't buy the change of heart. He knew about Baby's girlfriend. I guess it took her to walk in his place for him to have a new perspective, but still...didn't buy it. Also Foxx's character is too much of a loose cannon. Even Renner's Jem and Foster's Tanner wouldn't kill someone over cheap gum. Christ the guy was gonna kill some waitress over something that could barely be considered an insult or rudeness. Also it might have been a good idea for Spacey to have actually informed Foxx also known as Bats(ya know...cause he's crazy) that they were getting guns from police officers? I mean I really like the flick, but I just wish some of the rougher edges were smoothed out.

Doc is far too careful, and he even says he won't work with the same crew twice . . . and yet he does here. Why? Considering he owns a slew of crooked cops as gunrunners, surely he isn't hard up for strong-arm muscle to rob a place. And Doc wouldn't want a body count traced to him, and Bats's whole deal is that he's crazy (hence the name). I just can't accept that Doc would work with him again for something like this, especially as their first outing together resulted in what looked like a death and a high-profile car chase. Also, why did Doc tell Baby to observe things in the post office when Doc's nephew was already going to be doing so, and much more reliably? The Sam stuff was my favorite scene, but again, it felt like things were overcomplicating on Doc's end.

Also, why did Doc tell Baby to observe things in the post office when Doc's nephew was already going to be doing so, and much more reliably? The Sam stuff was my favorite scene, but again, it felt like things were overcomplicating on Doc's end. Yea that didn't make any sense to me. He's the driver. That's all he is there to do. What does Doc want him to start getting involved with the actual robberies in the future too? What he doesn't feel like Baby is pulling his weight or something? I hope there's more money in it for him is taking on more tasks. Let the "assess the room" be actual robbers job. Probably not a good idea to have your driver get out of the car. As for Bats this guy brings way too much attention. Their gonna commit a robbery the next morning and this guy wants to murder a waitress the night before. What if someone in the diner calls the police? Now you're racing out of there hoping no one identified you and hopefully not getting involved in a car chase with the cops. They have enough stress on their minds to be worrying about them getting caught for the murder of a waitress. I mean is Bats really that good at his job that he's worth having on another job? I mean aside from recognizing they were dealing with police officers, he doesn't seem all that smart to me. You would think Doc would want someone more low profile. I mean this guy is so unpredictable that I'm surprised Doc isn't worried Bats will betray the entire team. Hell even Baby could have at least demanded that Bats is never put on another team. Your driver is already gonna be a frazzled under pressure. He doesn't need crazy man making things worse. As for the same team thing? I guess he felt like he was combining his last 2 teams so it doesn't count as the same team. Yea flimsy explanation I know.

Kinda lame that they shot it in Atlanta and then did nothing at all to make it seem as though it was culturally specific to Atlanta. Maybe 1 hip hop song on the whole soundtrack and it's god damned Run the Jewels. Could Wright be more of an awkward white boy?

So felt Foxx was best performance, however Spacey got best lines honestly. Yeah, I'm not really sure who was MVP for me. I'm leaning towards Spacey, though. I also really enjoyed Eiza Gonzalez and forgot to mention her in the review. Really, the entire ensemble did very well, but no one was standout-level incredible.

In regards to the points that Stephen and Dodd G have made about Kevin Spacey's character, I'm beginning to think that the point of his characterization is that a.) he's a hypocrite who's all talk, and/or b.) he projects the appearance of running a tight ship while actually being rather inept at what he does. I sort of got hints from that with his change of heart revealing a sentimental nature that was more genuine to the character, and, as have been pointed out, there were many flaws to his operation that have me thinking that the character was intentionally written that way. I could be reading to much into it and/or just trying to excuse some script flaws, but that's my two cents.
Also, he could've given the "I never work with the same crew twice, except for you" speech to Baby just to butter him up.

Going to see it this Friday. I hate Scott Pilgrim but really like Shaun of the Dead, haven't seen any trailers for Baby Driver and don't even know what this is about but the word of mouth is so good and there is nothing interesting in the theaters here now

Doc projects a surprising amount of omniscience, being able to know all the information of Baby's personal life so intricately. And he seemed pretty quick to call off the heist at the slightest provocation; he left it to Baby to decide, after all. The heist wasn't important enough to make it 100% mandatory, and yet he couldn't scare up a new crew to pull it off even sans Baby? Nope. I love Edgar Wright and his direction was stellar, but the characterization of several players in this story wasn't nailed down at all in the script stage.

"Stop feeding me lines from Monsters Inc. It pisses me off." Probably staying my favorite line of the year, though Foxx was MVP for me. His delivery was hilarious too.

I liked it but had some problems with it. Mostly Spacey's character...
He goes from "you're done when I say we're done and I'll kill everyone you love" to "oh, you completely screwed up the job, but let me help you because I was in love once."
Plus, why was he still at the meeting place after the job went bad? It seemed so out of character to be that careless.

I did, I thought it was OK. It's a clever film and has amusing lines and story but I didn't find it that great neither did it make me laugh as much as Shaun with the recurring 'we're going to the pub to have beers' gag

Finally back after my little hiatus. Let my thoughts settle a bit on this one. I know stephen will kill me for this, but whatever... Better than Fury Road! Can we also talk about how Lily James is the most painfully, achingly beautiful thing on the earth?

I know stephen will kill me for this, but whatever... Better than Fury Road! Kill you? No. Pity you? Yes. I love Fury Road. I love the steampunk David Lean fever dream vibe that it created. But the simpler, but very oddball and frenzied charms of Baby Driver really hit the sweet spot.

I really enjoyed it. Fun action scenes, colorful characters. My only real issue was the Debora character who was just a bit too much of a generic "love interest" type (Lily James did the best with the character though).
I could definitely see it getting something for editing, sound editing, and/or sound mixing.
