Nice match today between Pablo Carreno Busta and Milos Raonic. The Spaniard wins 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 9-7 in what I'd call maybe a slight upset, cause it was his first win over a Top-10-Player. He now earns the honor of playing Rafa next. Don't see Pablo have a chance in that match. Muguruza is out after a tough match. I like the French fans for that they usually make easily the best atmosphere of anywhere in tennis. But when one of their own is playing they are hardly to stand. Cheering at double faults, disgusting. Also Kiki obviously helped to push them up. Would have liked Garby to go deeper again. But she definitely needs to play smarter. My sympathies in the top half are now with Caro Wozniacki solely. That was a great fight between those two, I think Rafa will make him his pigeon but I thought Raonic would put him away too... he's a promising player and I wouldn't mind seeing him at least put up a lot of resistance against Nadal. I think Timea has a muuuch stronger mental game than Garbage, so she should be able to withstand the pressure from the crowd and Kiki a lot better. Along with her net play, Mugu needs to get better at not allowing herself to be rattled by the atmosphere.

He is already 25 and clearly has his limitations. And he really isn't the type of player Rafa has usually troubles with. He is good at return in rallyes and runs and runs. A good recipe against Raonic on clay, but not against Nadal. Don't see him taking a set to be honest. Timea isn't mentally strong. Very talented, but as with many other players her mind (also her body, cause she is injury-plagued) is a big hurdle. I always remember her meltdown against Serena a few years back at Roland Garros. A match in which she was the much, much better player and that she should have easily won, but collapsed in awe of the moment. Haven't seen her play often in recent past so maybe she has matured.

Well compared to the field, I don't think she lets her injuries get to her as much. I do remember that match, but i've also seen her refuse to fold in recent matches. She missed the first two tournaments of the year, no warm up for the AO, and still matched her best result there. I remember her coming out of nowhere and beating Radwanska and Halep at the Miami Open to reach the semis when the crowds were clearly rooting against her. At Wimbledon last year against Niculescu she turned the match around and came back, winning 6 games in a row to take the victory. Maybe it's not so much mental strength. I guess it's more that once the others are losing they seem to drop their level of play. In spite of her injuries and absences, Timea is able to claw her way back and and fight those long sets out without losing focus. I do see your point re: Busta, I thought he was younger.

Halep beats her nemesis Suarez Navarro comfortably. The Romanian is such a joy to watch, when at her best. Really hope she wins this tournament. Definitely deserves a French Open win. Next is Svitolina who beat Halep in the Rome final.
Was looking forward very much to Verdasco - Nishikori. But right now they show the rather uninteresting Murray - Khachanov.

Halep has got to be favourite for the title now really. The question mark thrown up by that pre tournament injury seems to have been well and truly swatted away. She's looked more than a little formidable so far, and she's one of the few proven non-chokers left out there. Should be a blockbuster in the next round with Svitolina.
Anyway, this Garcia-Cornet match has got to be the most eagerly anticipated showdown since that Sharapova-Bouchard one in Madrid. COME ON, CARO! Her and Mladenovic is a dream final right now, and as that will probably never happen, this is the next best thing. She has got to take Cornet down.

Seeing Cornet lose is the only thing that will make me happier than seeing Mladenovic lose on the women's side of things.

But usually on the women's side that doesn't help much. There's a reason there were not many likeable (at least for me) WTA Grand Slam Champions in recent years.

It's a shame only one of Halep / Svitolina can make it to the final because they've both played the best so far this tournament, I think. The injury does seem to be gone though.
I'm sure all the Frenchwomen are rooting against Garcia but I see her winning against Pliskbot, who is not at her best right now (that first set was abominable).

How much are we all loving Mladenovic's "Kickin' it with Kiki" column!!!!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!! Some choice quotes::: "Outside of tennis, we never went to dinner together, we never went shopping together or stuff like that because our interests are way different. But it didn’t stop us from having amazing results in doubles because we were a great team. So on one hand I didn’t lose much because it’s not like she’s been my best friend.... We met in Indian Wells in the ice bath and she was surprised I was actually cold with her." - on Garcia "I’ve had pretty tough draws over the years here at the French Open. I remember I had a wildcard in 2010 and I played Li Na – I beat her four years later, but the first time I lost like 7-5, 6-3, that was a great match.... I also played against Dominika Cibulkova in 2012." Also the 5 paragraphs where she says the crowd she had in Stuttgart at the tiny indoor Porsche arena was worse than the FRENCH OPEN crowd was to Muguruza. And how it was worse for HER because she had the pressure to succeed for the crowd. Or her expanding on her Garcia comments, saying that she doesn't care because they were never friends and never practised together, but also talks about being hurt that Garcia only left her a message saying she didn't want to continue as doubles partners (curiously she leaves out the bitchy tweets she, Cornet, and Parmentier sent out after Garcia pulled out of Fed Cup - the year after she CARRIed their team with her two singles wins). ....... her lengthy column entry that criticises Sharapova endlessly ("Why it's important I speak out") is just as annoying too.

Strange decision today to put Nadal - Carreno Busta on the Chatrier instead of Thiem - Djokovic. I expect the former one to be an one-sided affair. Though if Carreno Busta plays the best match of his life he could win a set.
Thiem - Djokovic is the match of two of the biggest contenders behind Rafa though. Thiem so far has been the second best player on clay this year as well as the second most convincing player at Roland Garros. On the other side Djokovic played two quite weak matches, though obviously he won both. And Djoko beat Thiem heavily in Rome just two weeks ago, 6-1, 6-0. The pattern for this match should be clear. As you have to do against Nadal and Djokovic Thiem will throw everything he has against the Serb and this is pretty much. But of course with this will come errors and ultimatively it will come down how many he will make and how well Djokovic will respond. I think the Austrian will come pretty close this time, but in the end Djoko will prevail in a 5-setter. Rooting for Domi though - not because he is my countryman, but because he is a really nice guy.
In the women's matches I expect a tough contest between Mladenovic and Bacsinzsky, that could go either way. I pick Bacsinszky though, just a gut feeling.
And Caro vs. Ostapenko could be a close one as well. Both played three times and Jelena won every single match. The last one, a few weeks ago in Prague, was pretty close though. With Ostapenko prevailing in a 3rd set tie-breaker. My guess is that the series will see a change here and Wozniacki will win in a close three-setter.

I think Thiem is the perfect match up for Djokovic, all he does is hit the ball harder and harder and harder, Djokovic feeds off pace, and he feeds of consistent rhythm, and Thiem's game gives him both. If Thiem could get one good go against Novak on a sunny day then he'd have a better chance of hitting through the court, and just blowing the guy away, but their semi here last year was on a gloomy day, and the match in Rome this year that everyone got all hot and bothered over a night match with the same sort of heavy conditions, and once again today looks overcast, and unpleasant. I think he's going to struggle, even though there appears to be plenty of wind, and Novak hates wind. Timea is much more comfortable at Roland Garros than Mladenovic is, but I think it will all come down to how she handles the crowd. She is a pretty frail dear.

It's true that Thiem is a fine match-up for Djokovic, but if the Serb plays as week against him as he did the previous rounds, it won't be enough. It's true that Djoko has always struggled with wind so this could help Thiem as well. Still I think Djokovic will raise his game today.

She does wax lyrical a bit here about how she never speaks her mind so when she does it's really thought-out and intelligent. Also Svitolina is throwing EVERYTHING she has into this match so far and it's making for some brilliant tennis. Halep's score isn't a great indication of how good the ballplay and rallies are either.

I'm so happy Mladenovic lost, I really don't care what happens on the women's side from here on out. Svitolina's looking crazy strong, though I wouldn't be surprised at all if Halep came back and won the first set pretty easy. And Pliskobot looks properly calibrated today.
Suuuuuuuuper disappointing end to Carreno Busta's run. I don't think he was ever gonna win that match, but it still sucks to end it like that.

Svitolina is absolutely zoning offensively and defensively. Halep did really well to get those three games back in that first set. It's hard to live with someone like that when you have a game as relatively small as Simona's. She reminds me a lot of Djokovic, she can be aggressive in earlier rounds, but against the big guns she really can get shoved back way too far, and resort to Wozniacking her way through a match. Question is can Svity keep it up all the way to the finish line? Halep will surely pounce in a second if she can't.

Still, I'd agree that with her (and Woz) out there's nothing but positives to come out of the womens side now. This Plisko-Caro match is getting hooooooooooot.
