Let's see how this thread turns out: Of course we all sort of know, individually, what we might be into or what's our next choice and how it's received by film culture - sites, ratings or those we follow - but we might want to have a quick taste of what our MAR residents think about our next watch / advise us on seeing or skipping them / what is their selling points etc.... kind of like an inverted relative to the last movie you saw thread. For starters: do you recommend Ammonite (2020)? it looks like a second-hand Portrait of a Lady on Fire (judging by its poster and theme lol)...

It's not great, but I thought it was a lot better than its reputation suggested it would be. Winslet is really good in it, it's really nicely produced and everything, very, very lived in, and (if you're into this sort of thing) it's kind of economical with the chatter too, so a little more cinematic than the Sciamma movie where they never shut the fuck up. The writing completely lets it down to the point it feels incomplete, but it's worth watching if you like the people involved.

I'm inclined to agree with ibbi here. Winslet actually gives her one of her best performances here, and honestly, if the movie was just her Plainview-ing her way around the English seaside collecting fossils for two hours, I'd consider it a really good movie. The issue is that the core relationship doesn't really work -- Ronan's trying but her character is a sullen dishrag, and not remotely compelling on page, and what chemistry Ronan and Winslet have isn't romantically charged at all -- and that leaves us with a rather leaden, directionless flick. Still, I do love the look of it and Kate's on her A-game, so I would say it's at least worth watching for her.

Oh honeys, it's been said that Winslet did use tongue... and I don't mean a stand in tongue.

I've never seen anyone complain about the sound but it competes with Tenet's for the most irritating mix of 2020. I'm assuming they were going for realism but the sound was soooo unflattering and overwhelming and tinny and echo-y. Every interior footfall is like a mallet to your head and the ocean waves drown everything out. The interior voices are all tinny and you hear every little rustle and adjustment of clothes. Whatever the opposite of ASMR is, that's what this movie's sound mix was. Everything dialed to 100. Viscerally and I mean viscerally obnoxious.

To move on from Ammonite (which I haven't seen), I have another one.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
I have heard nothing but good things about this. However, I (1.) hated the first movie, and (2.) don't like anything. What precisely is it that makes the movie special? Sell it to me. Or don't, if you think it's crap. Push me one way or another.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish fucks. It fucks hard and it fucks fast. It fucks harder than any animated sequel has any right to fuck.

Uhhhh, how about Southland Tales? Is it actually worth watching? Is it worth watching? Yeah. I don't love it and I can't even say I really like it, but it's fascinating, especially on a meta level when we see what it did to Richard Kelly's career.

I didn't really see whatever it is that everyone is seeing. There's some nice voice work from a starry cast in true Dreamworks fashion. It does have very interesting stuff in it, but its a kids movie so it only half-heartedly touches on that and spends most of its time dabbling in far more by the numbers material. Also, be warned, it is pro-dog propaganda. I was fine with that, but I'm sure there are many people out there (e.g. Taylor Swift) who would not be.

How about Pride and Glory? the poster screams mediocre but does it at least feature an essential Farrell performance? I miss him... but am in no mood for anything "auteur-driven"; so McDonaguh and Mann and Coppola are out.

It doesn't really break new ground and hits every major cop movie cliché there is, but the performances are all top notch including Farrell. I do like that it is a much more character driven cop movie than you typically see. Also, fair warning, the conclusion may or not break your opinion of the whole thing. I, for one, liked it and thought it was a nice change-of-pace from other movies in the genre. Give it a shot!

On a mini Hepburn/Davis marathon these days... do you recommend (I know this sounds weird) their early OSCAR-WIN movies? Rarely people speak passionately about Morning Glory and Dangerous (even when they're discussing their work from that decade), and I don't really want to check them out if the gals' wins are the ONLY thing going on for them... so are they actually interesting tnx

It's entertaining, well written, and yes, Davis is great in it. It can be a bit melodramatic at times, but that hardly plays against it as a whole. I would definitely recommend it, especially to a Bette Davis fan. Morning Glory, on the other hand, is a bit of a slog, and Hepburn is not particulary good in it... Not sure why they awarded her for that. I guess that was a banner year for her (she also had Christopher Strong and Little Women, where she played Jo March, so maybe they saw a hint of her innate talent or a potential star). See it, sure, but don't expect too much of it. She has one interesting scene, where her character gets drunk and starts quoting Shakespeare , but that's about it. Ironically, Davis also has a similar scene in Dangerous.

A month ago so you might have watched it already, but it's a super basic cop procedural that gets elevated into being decent by a terrific performance from Norton. Don't remember Farrell standing out as much but he's there too if you're a completionist fan of him. But yes, it pretty much feels like some network cop show only with f-fombs, more blood, and better acting.

New Rose Hotel (1998)?
Looks like it checks a lot of boxes for me but has pretty abysmal reviews.

New Rose Hotel (1998)? Looks like it checks a lot of boxes for me but has pretty abysmal reviews. It's a very good film IMO, but it's an Abel Ferrara film, so it's stylistically unusual and very idiosyncratic, probably more so than any other film of his (with the exception of Zeros And Ones and Siberia as well). It's a vague and elliptical film and it's more interested in presenting the subjective nature of reality and how technology distorts one's view of events and characters, even themselves, than offering a solid narrative. It's a very acquired taste, so take that as you will.

Just watched Psycho 2 for the first time and thought it was surprisingly decent. Not expecting the other sequels to be as good, but was just curious if they are worth watching at all...

Not on the level of Psycho 2, but I dig Psycho 4 - they brought back the original screenwriter and it costars CCH Pounder as a late-night radio host! One of Showtime's first movies too, they put out some underrated fun stuff in the '90s.

I really like Psycho IV. It's immensely stupid, but in a satisfying way if you're into all this crap. Apparently I have seen Psycho III, but... I remember nothing about it.
