is Martyrs as extreme as people say? New French Extremity is mostly uncharted territory to me because High Tension scared me off it early. I've seen plenty of gory films but the closeups of graphic violence in High Tension made me physically nauseous (and pissed off lol) in a way virtually no other horror film has. I think what also annoyed me was there wasn't any warning, just gore in your face instantly. I have to occasionally look away during the Saw movies (especially in part 3 with the rack - eesh) but you always knew when it was coming. Is Martyrs as bad/worse than High Tension?

I'm curious about this as well. I also haven't seen it but I have seen Inside (2007) and if its anything close to that I'll probably have to pass.

Tommen_Saperstein SZillaBased on my memory, both Martyrs and Inside are at least as bad as High Tension in terms of violence / gore. But in terms of quality, they’re way better imo.

Inside is a pretty terrifying horror - especially early on - with a great horror performance by Beatrice Dalle ........I mean it's an extreme horror but I'll never forget it......there are actually very few unhinged female performance at that level of intensity Maybe it's just me ......

I don't remember High Tension's gore, but Martyrs IS fucked up.
Inside has lots of gore, to the point of being exploitative, unlike Martyrs.

It's been ages since I've seen it, but I remember liking it for what it was.

Sean Connery's best performance.

The Offence is a gem of a film - and as good as Connery is, the film is stolen by Ian Bannen who evokes Olivier - Olivier ffs as a PoS who has great evil fun, messing with Connery's mind........It's an all-time villain performance Must be watched very closely because the sound design / stylistic choices Lumet uses in this movie obscures some dialog and the dialog is fantastic and crucial

I wasn't a big fan of The Souvenir and I haven't yet sought out the sequel, but I did like The Eternal Daughter and would recommend that at the very least.

Okay I LOVE this thread.
Has anyone seen Death's Game (TV Series 2023‑ ), the korean show? Would like to hear your thoughts.
Among the movies, hows Eileen, A Thousand and One and Dream Scenario?

Depends if you like Hal Hartley's earlier films - it's VERY much an acquired taste - his way of staging and writing is very unique, and plays to his own beats not what is common in mainstrean films..........I love it myself - I love all his work through Henry Fool ..........it's about a nympho virgin...because she's choosy....if that strikes you as funny.......well that's a start.......

Is Gentleman's Agreement worth-seeking out? I have at least three Kazans over it to watch and wouldn't mind leaving this be if it's not particulary any of the actors' best work either.

A pretty cool Kino I've discovered is going to show this 1998 film in a few days, starring at least two interesting names that I hadn't even heard about before... do you recommend?

It's pretty good Jacobi s great - this was the period that a lot of these British stage actors started popping up more memrably in film - McKellen, Jacobi, Ian Holm in The Sweet Hereafter etc The "plot" of the film goes away from a compreehensive biopic and is sort of unrealized .......... in a way you could watch this movie AND Last Tango in Paris which (unforgettably) uses Bacon's paintings and still remain clueless about him as an artist.........the movie is kind unclear in the image it leaves you with of him........which may be the intent given his style of painting ......... Worth a watch for Jacobi who is marvelous and has to play what at times is quite immature and almost childish guy......
