Day 29: May the Devil Take You / Sebelum Iblis Menjemput (2018, Timo Tjahjanto)

Rocking a very creepy soundtrack and some decent jump scares, this Indonesian Netflix film from director Timo Tjahjanto is a love letter to the cabin in the woods subgenre (specifically The Evil Dead where the nods are plentiful). The plot centres on a young woman (Chelsea Islan) who returns to her estranged father’s villa after he has fallen into a coma. Things get real strange, real fast, and there’s enough buckets of blood and unnerving moments to keep you squirming.

This was fun, like if Albert Pyun did Blue Steel (where Ron Silver plays his role as if he was a werewolf) - just loads of atmosphere, encroaching camera, (actually brilliant) sound design over every scene.

Side note - I also watched this month the awesome Dark Angel The Ascent - lotta direct to video gems in the 90s!

Day 30: The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974, Francesco Barilli)

Despite the killer title and equally fantastic film poster, there’s very little of the lady in black in this psychological giallo film. Still, this is a rather hypnotizing and strange spiral of a woman experiencing bizarre hallucinations featuring her childhood self telling her she’s too old to have fun anymore (I feel attacked). Heavily influenced by Rosemary’s Baby, there is a lot of focus on past trauma amongst some bloody kills and iconic ‘70s fashion. Also be on the lookout for one of the most random cat jump scares for your horror trope bingo card.

Day 31: Giorgino (1994, Laurent Boutonnat)

Directed by Laurent Boutonnat who also wore the hats of writer, producer and composer, this was his feature film debut after a decade in the music video industry. Pulling out all the stops, here he crafts a gorgeous gothic tale about a young doctor returning home to search for a group of missing children that he had been caring for before the war. Searching for answers among rumours of wolves and an absolute visual feast of cinematography and art direction, Giorgino is a haunting ghostly story that leaves a lasting impression.
