I'm so glad you've been enjoying the ride! This journey has helped me explore the genre as well. I'm realllll far from my christian homeschooled roots now. :devil:

My longlist of possible future entries is pretty big, so I'll keep at this for as long as I can. :cheers:

Also released under the title The Evil Eye, this light caper involves an American mystery lover (Letícia Román) who gets tangled in a web of murders while vacationing in Rome. The final black-and-white production from director Mario Bava, this is also considered the first ever film in the giallo genre.

Day 4: The Sect / La setta (1991, Michele Soavi)

Co-written and produced by Dario Argento, Kelly Curtis stars as a school teacher whose life is upended with the discovery of a creepy old well in her basement. An entertaining exercise in offbeat imagery, this has an especially memorable supporting turn from Herbert Lom in one of his final performances. However, the makeup effects are the real star of the show and are so gruesome and visceral at times, it almost leaves an aftertaste.

Rather ahead of its time, this grainy low-budget flick follows members of a crew who are shooting a horror film and begin to realize that everything is starting to feel just a little bit too realistic. Filmed in 1978 but after receiving zero distribution, it didn’t see the light of day until being released on DVD in 2005. Make-up effects legend Tom Savini is also featured in a role.

After the death of her father, a young woman (Louise Salter) travels to a convent on a remote island in order to find the answers to her past. Drowning in religious fervour and Lovecraftian overtones, the art department goes all out with their use of blood and fog. For lovers of nuns, catacombs and creepy crying babies — this is a must-see.

This was awesome... might make an interesting double feature with One Cut of the Dead (2017). Sometimes I really crave these kinda handmade horrors that you can almost feel were made btwn friends (in this case, George Romero's crew). It predates the glut of meta horror around Wes Craven and there's a found footage ish quality (one scene reminded me of Blair Witch).

Also a side note - I'm so fascinated by movies that have a decades long lapse between completion and release - Chess of the Wind, The Plot Against Harry, Larks on a String, Other Side of the Wind, Amusement Park......

The inhabitants of the sleepy town of Whitewood don’t take too kindly to strangers. This becomes immediately apparent to a young college student (Venetia Stevenson) who arrives to do a research paper on what the location is best known for: witchcraft! While it has some predictable story beats, it more than makes up for it with atmosphere and oodles of fog. An old fashioned tale of superstition that asks where imagination ends and truth begins, this also features Christopher Lee and Patricia Jessel in memorable roles.

Day 8: J.D.’s Revenge (1976, Arthur Marks)

He came back from the dead to possess a man’s soul, make love to his woman, and get the vengeance he craved. This is no Easter story, but a tale of possession and payback that follows Ike (Glynn Turman), a college student whose body is taken over by the sprit of a notorious gangster who was wrongfully murdered in 1942. While others blame his demanding work and school load for this sudden personality change, Ike slowly becomes unhinged as a bloodlust for revenge simmers under the surface. Sprinkled with gruesome images and a psychedelic soundtrack, Joan Pringle and a scene-stealing Louis Gossett Jr. as one Reverend Elijah Bliss also appear.

Day 9: Grave Robbers / Ladrones de tumbas (1989, Rubén Galindo Jr.)

Finding much more than they bargained for, a group of grave robbing teenagers accidentally resurrect an axe-wielding satanic priest in need of blood and a bride to conceive the antichrist. From director Rubén Galindo Jr. (who also had fun with the undead a few years prior with Cemetery of Terror), this Mexican supernatural slasher is filled with schlocky gore and plenty of screams.

Day 10: Uncle Silas (1947, Charles Frank)

Also released in the United States with the title The Inheritance, this is a delicious gothic piece brimming with rain storms, shadows and stone-cold stares. The story concerns a young fatherless heiress (Jean Simmons) who moves in with her poor uncle who is scheming to get his hands on her fortune. Adapted from Sheridan Le Fanu’s book of the same name, this is filled with great characters and atmosphere, making it a must for lovers of period pieces with stuffy old houses crammed with secrets.

I was surprised by just how much I liked this when I watched it last year. I had never heard of it until my father recollected a movie "with a man carrying a giant cross" towards the end, which ended up leading us down the path to finding this. I loved the atmosphere of the cinematography and production design and the fact that it pulls

Definitely an underrated classic!

remember seeing City of the Dead a couple years ago. Love the visuals and the foggy atmosphere but I'm always a bit bummed about the witch trial stuff being *just* a framing device because that stuff is always the best part. Like that movie's intro was so shocking and metal and then it fast-forwards two centuries for a present-day mystery narrative that generally lacks suspense because we know the score from the first few minutes.

the hooded robes are such a mood though. I wanna join their club so bad
