Great pick......... @nikon - noted MAR Smiths fan and understander of my sense of humor (um) wrote about this film recently so you know what I did? I rewatched it as a tribute to the man (also I had nothing else going on ) ........and I have seen it a lot but not in a looooooooooong time .........and well..........heaven knows I'm miserable now (too easy)........it's one of the best horror movies about the loss of your freewill too ............and this movie is sustainably bleak in a way that's tough to pull off - not just bleak at times - but almost ridiculously downbeat right from the start .................and it has an ace ending / last shot too Deserves to be better known ...........

What a charming man ('daah)... and yes it deserves to be better celebrated in a world where Ringu is (and rightfully so)... and it's not Carpenter-scary (which things are a bit "softened" with an American ironic kind of sense of humor) or The Exorcist-scary (where yes things are a bit silly but give it time) or whatever... it's legit bring another-pair-of-pants terror I find. Them Asians don't fuck around.

I really want to see Angel Dust but it's not available to stream or rent digitally anywhere last I checked. Tubi and Shudder need to get on that.

I always enjoy these somewhat forgotten-about horrors / Gothics of the decade..... The Lost Moment (with ancient Agnes Moorhead!), The Woman Who Came Back, Strangers in the Night, My Name is Julia Ross, The Amazing Mr X........Dragonwyck would be a more popular example after Rebecca? Or a great Anton Walbrook double feature: Gaslight (better than the remake) and Queen of Spades. Uncle Silas reminded me a bit of Karloff's Thriller series where there's always someone cruelly angling for inheritance, but mostly of another Jean Simmons starrer, a Rebecca-ish very foggy Gothic.... Footsteps in the Fog (1955). She's quite good in both... Anyone have other favorite underrated perfs from Simmons? I loved the household in Silas and all the windiness and populating of it. There's a great exchange between an older and younger maid: “Say your prayers.” “I always do.” “Oh? That’s too often.”

She's great a lot - especially in the 50s.........I like her in the somewhat now forgotten anthology film Trio (1950) - she's in a segment (only 1 segment) where you could envision a whole backstory of films about how she got to the hospital she's at in this movie Exceptionally smart actress .......

Ken Hughes had such an odd resume. From Chitty Chitty to Cromwell and then he ended his career with a video nasty slasher. Was thinking about seeing Night School for my highschool/college slasher this year but went with Student Bodies instead. That's a weird one.
Haunt is another I really wanna see. Horror revolving around theme parks or attractions is such a guilty pleasure.
