This one was a public/reader vote in the UK for the popular British film magazine. Most of the usual suspects are there, and it's a very Western/Hollywood/UK centric list/poll, but that's to be expected. The winners were announced in no particular order, but this is the order Empire revealed them in:
Denzel Washington Tom Hanks Marilyn Monroe Robert DeNiro Bette Davis Natalie Portman Gene Hackman Heath Ledger Katharine Hepburn Tom Cruise Leonardo DiCaprio Tilda Swinton Samuel L Jackson Toshiro Mifune Nicolas Cage Humphrey Bogart Viola Davis Cate Blanchett Marlon Brando Alec Guinness Michael Caine Michelle Yeoh Tom Hardy Greta Garbo Philip Seymour Hoffman Jack Nicholson Meryl Streep Christian Bale Michelle Williams Anthony Hopkins Gary Oldman Florence Pugh Sidney Poitier Julianne Moore Shah Rukh Khan Buster Keaton Charlize Theron Laurence Olivier Kate Winslet Penelope Cruz Al Pacino Frances McDormand Joaquin Phoenix Ingrid Bergman Morgan Freeman Paul Newman Olivia Colman Daniel Day-Lewis James Stewart Nicole Kidman

Could someone check on Javi because he may be in shock - this is a UK list without Christie, Redgrave, Smith, Dench, Jackson....and also Gena Rowlands and Liv Ullman, Mirren and Huppert....the females are pretty awful - Magnani missing too.........Close.......Page For the men Dustin Hoffman, Finney, Lemmon who would all be in my top 10 - Lemmon a top 10 American anyway..... Duvall who's arguable top 10ish for me also as an American....all the old pre-Brando dudes are out Clift, Muni, Stewart, Grant, Fonda, also the perpetually ignored Amitabh Bachchan Tom Hardy is the biggest - "really?" for me....... he's probably like - oh yeah fnckers! - and then he may have shat himself

Not that this list is the definitive reason, but I've long said the " Big 4" of the 70's era no longer exists in it's original form. Dustin Hoffman , reputation/legacy-wise has been surpassed by Gene Hackman, who I believe is widely considered greater by audiuences (and many critics) today than Hoffman. Hoffman is still a generational talent and a great American actor, but I'm not surprised when he misses these kind of lists and Hackman gets in instead.

So everyone in uk know Denzel except for voting body? Haha Denzel has always been hugely respected and popular with UK audiences. He always makes these greatest actor polls/lists when British audiences vote. The disdain UK awards voters have for him doesn't translate to paying audience's. Interesting to see someone like Johnny Depp no longer feature on a list like this, as British viewers used to re ally adore him for being an anglophile (I know he's had terrible PR in recent years, but he still seemed pretty beloved in the UK when he last visited their after his court case). Kinda surprised Brad Pitt isn't on it either (I wouldn't have Pitt on my 50 Greatest Actor list, but he seems a natural choice for Empire readers).

Nice list and I like the drawings. I guess with Nicholson, Phoenix, and Ledger they might have 3 different Joker drawings.

No particular order in this list + popular vote just makes me think the #1 is somewhat embarrassing.

Yeah, this is the worst list of its type that I've ever seen. It also leaves off anything odd or quirky - I say this all the time but there is no other actress quite like Sissy Spacek - and not many better - so of course no Sissy Spacek Men are always arguable but the females here are so weak - no Jane Fonda for Godsales........you can actually make a better list by the females who aren't on here

When a top 50 isn't ranked I'm not sure how meaningful it is. I guess a few surprises like no Hoffman and Pugh/Yeoh making it. Not a lot outside the English language but for Empire readers that's not a surprise. Love Florence Pugh but wtf is she doing on that list?.Ridiculous. Especially with the absence of Saoirse Ronan who has clearly accomplished more at this stage with them both being around the same age.

Especially with the absence of Saoirse Ronan who has clearly accomplished more at this stage with them both being around the same age. I feel the biggest takeaway from this list isn't the omission of someone like Dustin Hoffman or the inclusion of people like Florence Pugh. It's that Meryl Streep truly fucked over an entire generation of actresses whom by all rights could/should be making lists like this with ease. It's like Streep was the only actress of note from 1978 to 1992, and then they skipped to the next generations (who are overrepresented on this list...does Natalie Portman or Michelle Williams really need to be there? . Sigourney Weaver, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, Judy Davis, Michelle Pfieffer....Streep has made an entire generation of great screen actresses afterthoughts.

I feel like this list is a general microcosm of an average IMDB user during the middle of the Obama administration.
They either know stuff that's really old or stuff that's really new - but have a huge blindspot towards the releases in the middle of that chronology.
The only choices here that can be argued as "middle chronology" are Natalie Portman and Kate Winslet but those are names way too big, or way too ingrained into American or British pop culture to be ignored. Everyone has seen Titanic, and a middle brow viewer who saw and like Eternal Sunshine is not hard to find at all - I can find one in a coffee shop. And the average American or British viewer have definitely seen a major Natalie Portman movie, or two.
Beyond those 2 possible exceptions..... every other choice here are either the names that have been in a lot of old classics, or names that have been active during the Obama administration. If you fell off tremendously during the 2010s you are likely forgotten already - just a random few examples are Jude Law and Helena Bonham Carter. Just random examples, I'm not arguing if they deserve to be on the list or not - just examples.

Tom Hardy is in but no Fassbender or Gyllenhaal, or even Gosling??
Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy alone redefined acting, how can he miss in the list??
Florence Pugh (who i love) over Saoirse Ronan?? This is ridiculous.

No particular order in this list + popular vote just makes me think the #1 is somewhat embarrassing. Well, this article suggests Denzel Washington may have topped the votes (maybe because he was named first or maybe because they had insider information about vote totals. Who knows )which may be embarrassing for the British Film Industry in one sense, because they never want to nominate him for anything. It'd be a pretty bad look if the British Public voted Denzel the acting GOAT, and he can't even get a BAFTA nomination www.laineygossip.com/florence-pugh-youngest-actor-on-empires-50-greatest-actors-all-time-list-in-time-for-baftas-february/72276

I saw Marilyn Monroe listed 3rd before the tweet loaded and immediately thought “define greatest”. Because in terms of how famous or how much of a pop culture impact she had, then sure absolutely, but in terms of how good an actress she actually was… ehhhhhh
But then the tweet loaded and it said it was voted on by the readers and suddenly this god awful list made sense. Interesting that they picked Keaton but not Chaplin

Not listing the order is a cheap way out because they don't want to reveal the (likely) trendiness - to be nice - of their readership.......not that #1 - whoever it was - would be embarrassing maybe - but it was probably several spots that stand out near the top of the list....I mean it was likely DiCaprio who was #1..........it's not really different from the results of a Reddit poll tbh......

Where is this Tom Hardy stuff even coming from? Even if you like the dude's acting, he's years removed from stuff like Locke. Venom, Capone, Venom 2? His career is in a wasteland.

This is a UK public vote. Hardy has an intense cult following in his home country because of things like Legend, where he played the most iconic British Gangsters ever (the Kray Twins) and his role as another gangster on Peaky Blinders. It's a UK bias towards him that may or may not be permanent. I suspect it won't last long if his body of work as an actor doesn't improve from here.

That too. But UK bias and cult following in his home country because of certain iconic British roles he played....probably is the much bigger factor.
