Anyhow I don't think it will be a problem for Best Director.. It's certainly a pretty good directorial achievement that will be talked about in the heat of awards season. But still at its best it's a film to admire than to love and that will be effective in terms of its Oscar prospects. Let's see what's in store for us competition wise.

I think it's important to note that Peter Travers gave it 4 stars. His taste is generally very close to the Academy.

No characters to care for is all Jeremy said. Nolan specifically said this. I'm glad i read this before watching the film. I'm not that guy who always looks for characters to grab on their journey. Not that I'm defending Jahns, but here's where I really differ from that. Me, I'm someone who likes to go into a movie fresh. Obviously I don't always succeed, but I usually prefer to steer clear of those filmmaker viewpoints and outside sources as much as possible, and simply let the movie do all the speaking for itself. Like if I were to stumble into a Best Buy fifty years from now (just go with it), and Blind buy this movie. Maybe Nolan succeeds in crafting this story where empathy for the soldiers is less important than the suspense of the events (and by the critical word, I'm assuming he succeeded), but my feeling is that if a film or the filmmakers have to point us to these outside sources or knowledge in order to better understand and enjoy a movie (as was the case for Alien: Covenant, where the Prologues cut from the final film did a better job at establishing mood and character than the actual lazy, horrid film), I think that's more on the film's head. Then again, I don't have context or the full picture yet, so I'll reserve my judgment until I do.

If the film truly works, then you shouldn't need to dredge up an interview with the filmmaker saying what they were going for.

Although I usually look to Slant and I am very open to the strong possibility that Dunkirk will not be all that it's cracked up to be, Jake Cole has a fairly bad track record. Eg. he gave Baby Driver 3.5/4, John Wick 2 3.5/4, XXX a 3/4, etc etc. I wouldn't put that much stock in his opinion at this point.

Chuck Bowen and Ed Gonzalez are the only ones worth reading at Slant.
Jake Cole sucks.

He didn't like my comment Lol'd I once tweeted to him to say I was skeptical of his 3.5/4 John Wick 2 review after he recommended something that turned out shitty and he got all bitchy. Seems like a punk.

Another rotten review, this one from Kevin Carr of ... Fat Guys at the Movies
So all 3 rotten reviews have come from non-credible sources. For all intents and purposes Dunkirk's RT rating is 100%.

Why the heck are you guys obsessed with the RT rating? Also, literally 90% at least of RT reviews are from critics who write for third-rate publications and generally have garbage taste so to deny some credibility while upholding others is pretty ridiculous. Slant over the years has consistently been one of the better sources for reviews so to claim they are non-credible is pretty foolish. This site is far better because it actually uses discriminating taste when it comes to what critical sources it uses as opposed to RT's random grab bag of practically anyone who posts anything online: link

The worst thing about Jake Cole from Slant Magazine, is that this idiot uses God Toshiro Mifune as an avatar - that´s just frustrating Fuck this shit

Also Nolan stans legitimately seem disturbed.

Nahh I like Nolan, he is pretty good, but I couldn´t care less about his films "failures". Anyway, you waste your precious time talking to a whiner like me, how about that?. But hey, I just love to hate Slant Magazine, you can curse me for that

So it sounds that the characters are really a secondary focus in the film after the events, according to that quote?

If the film truly works, then you shouldn't need to dredge up an interview with the filmmaker saying what they were going for. I agree with both assessments here. I tend to separate and look into other outside sources after watching a movie first, just to have my own personal opinions and film-viewing experience formed. When the film works on its own as intended, I could see where the points are made.
