The embargo has been lifted. The reviews are in, and they are spectacular. 97% approval rating according to Rotten Tomatoes. Much better acclaim than the original. Back in 1987, the Academy nominated Top Gun for Sound, Sound Editing, Film Editing and won for Original Song. What do you think Top Gun 2 aka Top Gun: Maverick will get nominated for? Could this potential be another Mad Max: Fury Road situation, where the reboot was seen as infinitely better than the original and received much more major Oscar consideration?
For the record, I love Lady Gaga's music, but the film's theme song is downright pedestrian: Way too long, repetitious, and generic.

I don't believe these reviews yet. Top Gun is a very, very good movie. Mad Max Fury Road is significantly worse.

Sound and original song are locks. I think it has a shot at BP tbh and probably a couple more techs.

Jesus Christ those reviews Having not yet heard this Gaga song, my gut says sound probably and VFX maybe. With its loud jet sound fx the movie seems tailor made to wow the sound branch. At this point I'm sticking with sound.

I have to say, I’ll laugh if Ed Harris got nominated.
Also, Sound is a definite. I haven’t heard the song, but by virtue of Gaga, I think she’ll get in

At this super early point I'm gonna say 3 - Sound, VFX and Song. But I can see Editing as a proper option too.

I don’t think the nom is in question. I’d be shocked if she doesn’t win tbh.

Not a fan of it either, but I’ve only listened a few times. I think she does capture the vibe or Take My Breath Away, but it feels like a weak imitator of that song. I agree with Pittsnogle_Goggins that she will be nominated and might even win again for it.

Obviously haven't seen it but I would say song, FX and maybe an outside shot at score if Hans brought his A game. Don't see any big ones happening. The original got editing because those were real aerial sequences they filmed, if it's CG it ain't the same thing.

Wait, are you under the impression that they will be using cgi and not real aerial sequences in this?

I don't think the reason why the OG got Editing was the fact that they were real - it was nominated because it was a successful action movie with intense cutting. Which I'm assuming the new one is gonna be too, with the additional benefit of very good reviews. And as others have said, they did plenty of real aerial stuff (that's kind of Cruise's thing, isn't it?).

People are crying so that sounds like a BP nod to me. And it will make money.

Song and Sound feel as safe as anything, Editing is probably a solid bet, and I think Picture could be on the table.

not to be a wet blanket, but I just remembered the last three MI films were over 90% on RT too and Fallout was especially beloved when it dropped but none of them received a single nomination. I still thinks this has a good shot at a sound nomination just because it has jets and good reviews, buuuuut... the awards season is still months away. Maybe it gets Mission Impossible'd.

There has only been two Top Gun films. Both were 36 years apart. Mission Impossible has 8 films. None of the Mission Impossible films were nominated for Oscars as far as I know. The first Top Gun was a big Oscar movie, nominated for 4, including Film Editing and won for Song.
While I get that, many see this as another "Tom Cruise is running" and "Tom Cruise is doing his own stunts" film, I think there's more 80s nostalgia happening here. Top Gun made the Library of Congress list.
I think there is a possibility that this film will indeed get "Mission Impossible'd" or "Edge of Tomorrow'd". Just because films and audiences loved the movie, doesn't mean the Academy will. My vote is Sound, Song, and Editing. I wouldn't be shocked at all, if Tom Cruise gets nominated for a Critics Choice, Globe, SAG, BAFTA, or Oscar for his performance.

IMDB users gave the film an 8.7/10 rating. Broadcast Film Critics score of 92/100.

IMDB gave it an 8.7/10 rating. Broadcast Film Critics 92/100 score. That's a weird way to word it, it's just audience scores.

Outside of stunts obviously, which isn't awarded, I don't think the MI films have ever had very impressive techs. Maybe I could have gone PD for the first one but that wasn't one of the ones you're talking about. If this doesn't get a sound nod something is messed up and I don't expect anything else to have better sound this year. Plus I'm sure they'd love to nod Gaga and get her to come to the ceremony to help out the ratings a little bit.

so after seeing it I definitely think it's in play for a handful of techs. Song and sound are no-brainers but It's going to be in play for editing and VFX too. I could see it getting passed over for VFX just because the narrative has stressed the practical effects and stunts in contrast to the CGI which definitely is supporting, but VFX could absolutely be a coattail tech nod. The VFX-work isn't unlike the effects in No Time to Die and that got in over more CGI-heavy picks too, annnd obviously Maverick has made a much bigger cultural splash than the Bond flick so I think it's a definite contender.
for now I'm going with: Sound Song Editing Visual Effects
