Let's consider this our Sofia Coppola appreciation thread! Since we don't have a dedicated space for directors, I hope it's okay to place the thread here. Please, share your thoughts here - her films, her photography, her visual inspirations, her style, her taste in music... Anything you'd like to discuss.

Love her and always thought she was sexy and sweet in GF 3 - which you wackadoodles still underrate - you were wrong then AND now - I'm embarrassed for you!! - and she's perfectly adequate (though not exactly "good") in that movie despite what people on here and in general say and trust pacinoyes on this shit - if there's 2 things people on MAR know jack shit about it's assessing "film acting performances" ............and also what makes a good Rock band I like how she's a quirky, stylish chick too and always kinda was - I mean she's the baby getting baptized at the end of The Godfather Part 1. Not a dry eye in the house! But she's also the naked temptress in a mask on the cover of Redd Kross' Third Eye album - because she dated the dude in that band. Underrated band too, pretty kickin' record. Basically I just reduce everything to looks and bands .....I understand she makes films now as well.......

I haven't liked her last few films. Bling Ring was terrible. The Beguiled I thought sucked. Haven't seen On the Rocks or her Murray Christmas special. Love Marie Antoinette and Virgin Suicides, and moderately like Lost in Translation though it's wildly overrated. She's certainly interesting at her best, but far too inconsistent for me to eagerly follow her career anymore.

Lost in Translation is in my top 20 of all time, but I don't think she's come close to replicating that level of greatness. I've still liked just about everything she's directed though...

I think Sofia is awesome. I liked her ever since 2003. That's the year her name became recognized by (some) people.
But I think the entire Coppola family is awesome. They're so artistic. They live in another world than me.
I think Sofia made an impact in the 00s. There are some teen shows that reference Sofia in the 00s. "Wait this is like a Sofia Coppola movie or something?" "All these lunches in the Zen Garden. Your life is resembling a Sofia Coppola movie."
Hoping she makes a Campion like comeback. Marie Antoinette was her last really amazing movie. I like On the Rocks. Maybe Top 5 of the year, but it doesn't get me excited as the first bunch of movies she did.
Sofia is cool not just as a director, but as a person or celebrity too. I can appreciate her for other things besides just her movies.

With her teenaged daughter, Romy, at a Marc Jacobs show in New York...

Only seen a few, but I fuck with her. Lost in Translation is in my Top 100, and The Beguiled is in my Top 8 of 2017.

Lost in Translation is an appealing and memorable film of it's time, but I think I liked it more because of Murray's presence than her vision. The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette leave lasting impressions; though I did struggle with the latter. Somewhere is an interesting one. Bored the hell out of me when I first watched it, but it's very "aimlessness" is what I liked so much on my unexpected re-watched (came up on a channel) a few years ago. The Bling Ring was where I drew the line (insufferable)... and I'm in no rush to watch her The Beguiled, since I enjoyed the original so much.
So in general I lean towards positive. It's admirable how she came out of the shadow of her father (and that notorious performance) to be celebrated as a recognizable visionary. Pretty attractive too.

Didn't know she directed Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christina Ricci and Jena Malone altogether at once! back in mid-90s... I dig those girls.

I've only seen three of her films and I enjoyed all of them.
I think it's safe to say that Lost in Translation is one of my all-time favorite films. The Virgin Suicides, which I saw this year for the first time, completely blew me away. Marie Antoinette, which I saw for the first time last year, didn't impress me much at first (apart from the beauty of the palace and the costumes), but the film has been growing immensely on me and I think it's so much more than meets the eye.
I'm sure I'll get around to the rest of her filmography eventually, and honestly I'm kind of looking forward to that. The next one I'll see is probably Somewhere.

Happy birthday!
For some reason, I always get the urge to rewatch Lost in Translation specifically around this time of year. It's a film that leaves me with a feeling that no other movie ever has - a simultaneous sense of warmth and deep melancholy.

I thought this was really cool - a photo of the "mood board" Coppola kept on the set of The Beguiled - images from Tess, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Marriage of Maria Braun, The Story of Adele H., and Hitchcock films... No Barry Lyndon, though?

I'd like to pose a question to you all - would you like to see her direct another person's screenplay? She has only ever directed her own screenplays, but I do think she's a stronger director than she is a writer (generally speaking). Let me know your thoughts. pacinoyes Mattsby

Aren't 5 of her 8 films (including Priscilla) based on other material anyway? Speaking of Priscilla, it's funny she did that project, especially in the way she describes it... bc it sounds similar to something I thought she'd be interested in - an adaptation of the documentary My Darling Vivian (of Johnny Cash's wife). I'd also like to see her do something more ambitious or spicier.... On the Rocks was okay but so slim. Personally, idk why she isn't remaking The Anniversary (1968) or The Nanny or Last of the Sommervilles or something/anything for Judy Davis (who iconically curtsied in Marie Antoinette; and she's due to remind ppl she's the GOAT).

Let me know your thoughts. pacinoyes Mattsby It's surprising that she hasn't........she co-wrote Life Without Zoe with her dad........and she obviously knows a whole coterie of artistic types who are on the same wavelength as her ......it might free her up to concentrate on directing ........her directorial touch is so light and delicate she might think working with a collaborator might make her have to be more heavy handed than she'd prefer to be........ I think she could have filmed The Secret History (still never been filmed, wtf!) but is never thought of for that sort of murder piece, and is never associated with things like that in general......yet it has things that are up her alley - family, privilege, classical virtues (or not) academia, ennui.......it would actually would be shocking to see her film something like that - yet it's not so far removed from her aesthetic at all........I think she might think it's just crass

ibbi - Very pretty girl! Her TikTok has since been deleted... I'm guessing she's in even bigger trouble now than before. Did you peep Sofia's dog, Gnocchi? She is such a sweet pet! By the way... According to Far Out Magazine, we have an updated list of her 10 Favorite Films... In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar Wai, 2000) A Place in the Sun (George Stevens, 1951) The Heartbreak Kid (Elaine May, 1972) Rumble Fish (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983) The Piano (Jane Campion, 1993) La notte (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1961) Purple Rain (Albert Magnoli, 1984) Lost in America (Albert Brooks, 1985) Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, 1954) Bugsy Malone (Alan Parker, 1976)

Hopefully she’ll never quell that rebellious fire. Keep telling the truth, kid. Also, that’s a shallot.

Hilarious satire tbh and even funnier how many people online were taking this seriously.
