I enjoy dunking on the British as much as the next person, but this is pretty much how I felt about it although I usually hate the phrase I think this falls into the "not for me" category since it is so well made. Some people would think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is every bit as ridiculous as I did this. It's one of those things where if I watched more Bollywood movies to get more of a handle on what the tone is intended to be I might like it a bit more. Do Indians watch these things straight or is it intended to be funny? That's what I was confused about, a lot of the situations were things that felt like it should be a joke but it was being played so seriously. Don't know if that was the intent or if they're just really committed to the camp. there's a line between "played straight" and "funny camp" usually delineated by the word "fun" which is what i get from this. when the insane setpieces or musical cues happen in this, sure it's over the top, but it's still got an energy to it that is clearly not just ironic machismo. it's unironic love for its heroes, which i think can sometimes be difficult for western viewers to grasp when so much of their big budget entertainment thesedays is so drenched in irony or humor (even most outsider camp flicks here are pretty overt in that they aren't trying to be taken seriously).

Wouldn't mind a supporting actress nod for Bhatt at all since she's getting FYC'd. Would be cool to see her get a push in Hollywood like what happened with Chopra although hopefully with better parts. I'm sorry but I didn't like this at all. It's tonal whiplash to the point of insanity I enjoy dunking on the British as much as the next person, but this is pretty much how I felt about it although I usually hate the phrase I think this falls into the "not for me" category since it is so well made. Don't know if that was the intent or if they're just really committed to the camp. With SS Rajamouli, there is no room for camp. Some shots or scenes might end up as unintentionally funny but 90% of the time he commits seriously to everything he is putting on the screen.

To those who’ve seen the movie (I’ve yet to, and I will tonight), and perhaps have some knowledge on the subject, is it really the top tier of Indian cinema?
Because the hype’s making me eager to see it, but because of my limited knowledge of Bollywood and things like that, I get the feeling it’s more the one that broke through, it had the support to crossover, but there’s probably better things in the field.

Is it the top tier of Indian cinema? That's hard to say. I'm no expert on Indian cinema but when I hear that I think more of the works of Satyajit Ray, Guru Dutt, or Ritwik Ghatak. I have been watching a few highly regarded Bollywood movies this past year though - including the likes of Jai Bhim, 3 Idiots, Like Stars on Earth, and Dangal, and while the Bollywood style is an acquired taste that you have to get used to a bit, I'd say that RRR and 3 Idiots were the easiest to get into right away. I hope you enjoy it. It's a fun ride.

I'm no expert on Indian cinema, but I'd recommend director Vishal Bhardwaj. I've only seen Haider (Hamlet moved to 1995 Kashmir - it's pretty cool, although not one of my absolute favorite movies), but he's also done versions of Macbeth and Othello (and other non-Shakespeare movies). I think Haider is accessible and pretty dang good as an action film - if it was made in Hollywood, it would have been an Oscar player.

It is top tier commercial cinema. There's no one in India who makes movie watching more exhilarating than SS Rajamouli. It is not Bollywood (Hindi). RRR is a Telugu (South India) language film.

If this giant comic heap of stinking garbage lands even a little bit big at the Oscars I hope the Cult of Snyder swarm the stage at the ceremony, tie themselves to the giant decorative statues and/or self-immolate in protest.

I don't hate the movie or anything (just politely like it) but this is not only hilarious but also kinda sorta true

Anybody else think Naatu Naatu isn’t even the best song in the movie?

Anybody else thing Naatu Naatu isn’t even the best song in the movie? Yeah, for sure. I guess it's been chosen as the one to pimp out because of the musical number itself (which is a lot of fun) but it's nothing more than fine as a song imo. My favorite is the pre-credits one, "Sholay". The one where the hero gets Passion-of-the-Christ'd is also better.

There are some similarities like slo-mo, over the top violent imagery but at the core Rajamouli is more earnest and sentimental and Snyder films are total opposite. The biggest difference is Rajamouli never had a flop in his career. Majority of his films are blockbusters while Snyder's only big hit was 300.

Why this is getting the recognition that it is, when there have been so many other Bollywood/Bollywood-adjacent movies that actually deserve it, I do not and will never understand. Did i miss something? What was this trying to be? I can appreciate that Telugu movies may love over dramatization but some scenes (that dance battle..............) were just offensive lol. If it was trying to be a comedy, then this hit it out of the park. Insane is right. Masterpiece?
