If and when George Miller decides to hang up his spurs, I want him to give Mad Max over to Rajamouli. And I want Ram Charan as Max.

I wonder if it could actually crack the IF Oscar lineup. I doubt it but a song nomination isn't out of the question.

The original Telugu version of the film is streaming on Zee5, a local streaming platform which i guess is available in US too but i don't recommend subscribing to it. Instead wait for Netflix to get the Telugu version or just watch the Hindi version. The main actors dubbed their voices in Hindi too. So its perfectly fine.

Nah, the Academy isn't cool enough to go for this kind of film. I feel like it might end up being too big to ignore. Even if it ends up being too popular to ignore, it's not really up to the Academy anyway - it's up to the Indian jury. They generally don't submit these kinds of films for Best Foreign Language Film consideration, and often make the wrong choices (not sending in The Lunchbox for some weird reason and barring Sardar Udham for completely justified hate against the British empire were two big ones, especially since Lunchbox could've been a decent competitor for the win).

shaking my damn head that the only people who caught this in theaters were me and the desis I was lucky enough to see it in theaters in early April before all the hype. Noticed it was playing on a much larger number of screens than most of the Indian films that play in Dallas. Gave the reviews a quick glance and they were through the roof. Went right away to an entirely empty theater and was beyond blown away.

This film is awesome and I'm really glad that Indian cinema is having its day in the sun again thanks to it.

Not finished, but loved what I've seen. My son also loved it some parts. Then he got scared with the violent scenes. Worth watching.-

sean baker @lilfilm · 2h Believe the hype. RRR is epic and a must-see in theaters! My jaw might be permanently dropped. In LA, it’s playing at @drafthousela and @laemmleglendale
Sean Baker liked it.

Finally just bit the bullet and watched the Hindi dub on Netflix last night and yeah, it really wasn't bad at all (turns out a dub isn't really distracting when you're also reading subs, who woulda thought!) Indeed a great action blockbuster. The first half is basically perfect moviemaking - basically one epic setpiece after another that beautifully flow into each other with each building upon the last, all while communicating its story clearly and economically. The second half for me is quite a bit lesser tbh. It's basically always a misstep to go into an extended flashback sequence mid-movie and this is no exception for me. Then it kinda becomes a series of more and more rescue missions but, I mean, it fully won me back over with that glorious final 30-ish minute stretch, which is undeniably great stuff. Really glad I finally watched it, and I'm happy that it still plays well at home and in a dub, though I'll forever be bummed I missed it in theaters - it was barely released near me in its initial run (plus I didn't have much free-time during the two weeks I could've seen it) and as mentioned earlier in the thread I missed the EncoRRRe night because of shit luck. It's certainly not the end of the world but I can just absolutely imagine how this kills in a packed theater and I'm sure that's where most of the more effusive five-star responses are coming from. Still, it's fun regardless.

Still, it's fun regardless. This film is an event, almost a festival for Telugu (original languange) people. Both NTR and Ram Charan hail from legendary film families and these families and actors in them competed heavily in past and there's a rivarly among both fandoms. These two coming together to star a film is unexpected and unprecedented. So curiousty levels were an on all time high. SS Rajamouli brought these two and delivered a satisfying blockbuster which is nothing short of amazing.

And I thought that Cage and Pascal had the best bromance of the year. Boy was I wrong!
I liked the flick. It's ridiculous but in a good way, it's fun, it's fairly free of rules and conventions when it comes to the setpieces (not so much as far as the script is concerned though) - it's an enjoyable ride for sure. I don't quite see what others are seeing when they go apeshit for it but hey, good for them and good for the movie. I wasn't exactly in love with the overly glossy commercial-like cinematography or the VFX quality or the flashbacks which really affected the momentum. But all in all this was an experience that put a smile on my face on multiple occasions. I'm most pleased that they really stuck the landing there with that final action sequence which was a blast.
The most historically inaccurate thing about the movie is probably Alison Doody's face. Why oh why do people do this to themselves?

No surprises there. A lot of folks in the film board and the big wigs in the film fraternity don't have a high opinion on Telugu cinema even though it is the second biggest film industry in Indian cinema and the most successful one right now.
But the US distributor of the film says they will submit RRR in general category. Hopefully it gets some love and grabs at least a nom in techs or something.

I'm sorry but I didn't like this at all. It's tonal whiplash to the point of insanity, and I don't think citing cultural specificity justifies it. If you had this corny slow-mo shot of a guy jumping out of something with 5 lions/tigers/jaguars simultaneously released etc. with lousy CGI in a western film, you'd call bullshit. I don't understand moving goalposts for different cinemas. Something like The Raid was remarkable because the fight choreography was simply unparalleled and took all action to a new level in that respect. You didn't have characters spouting absurdities, interpolating impressively shot stuff with Encarta 95 level graphics, editing making BoRhaps look like NCFOM. What does RRR do new or superlative? To me, nothing. It's just a weird miniseries stuffed into 3 hours.

Wouldn't mind a supporting actress nod for Bhatt at all since she's getting FYC'd. Would be cool to see her get a push in Hollywood like what happened with Chopra although hopefully with better parts. I'm sorry but I didn't like this at all. It's tonal whiplash to the point of insanity I enjoy dunking on the British as much as the next person, but this is pretty much how I felt about it although I usually hate the phrase I think this falls into the "not for me" category since it is so well made. Some people would think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is every bit as ridiculous as I did this. It's one of those things where if I watched more Bollywood movies to get more of a handle on what the tone is intended to be I might like it a bit more. Do Indians watch these things straight or is it intended to be funny? That's what I was confused about, a lot of the situations were things that felt like it should be a joke but it was being played so seriously. Don't know if that was the intent or if they're just really committed to the camp.
