Just dropping my 2 cents on the matter, I think Leo was Top 2 and Smith was a jury save.

Care to predict the BAFTA wins in the Acting categories? Benedict Cumberbatch Lady Gaga Kodi Smit-McPhee Ruth Negga

I had forgotten about these, then I took a peek and I was worried this would happen (re: Stewart). The Crown went 0/11 at the Bafta TV awards this past season and it gave an unflattering portrait of the royal family. Spencer is even worse in its portrayal, and a movie that can be somewhat divisive as well due to the way it's made. I think in the end Stewart makes it, but if she's snubbed I wouldn't be shocked. It would be the worst snub I've seen in a long time. It would be so bad, I would consider not even watching this year.

Supporting Actor shows that we've definitely got a solid top three (Kodi, Troy, and Ciaran), but the rest of the category is in flux. My question is, which of these guys were our top two? Precursors would point to Smit-McPhee and Kotsur since they've hit everything, but Hinds doesn't feel quite like a jury pick the way Kotsur does. Faist and Plemons desperately needed this, and at the right time, too. I think it's too little, too late for both of them, but one of them could conceivably ride this wave to an Oscar nod. These nominations will have no direct influence on the Oscar nominations considering they came out after Oscar nominations voting ended. There's no momentum for Faist or Plemons to get cause it's literally too late. But Plemons could happen considering Power of the Dog is very strong right now and the Supporting Actor category is largely a wasteland this year. He can ride the coattails of the movie. West Side Story has performed rather poorly with the Guilds for Faist to crack in. Spielberg is in very real danger to get snubbed in the directing category for a passion pick like Hamaguchi.

Since then there's a different jury system because of the 'BAFTAS so white' stuff so now there's more of a need for tokenism and 'doing the right thing' to avoid damaging their brand.

The Oscar winners were also all white two years ago, and four years ago, and six years ago, and 7 years ago, and so on. The jury doesn't influence the winners, and wasn't made to, it was made because BAFTA had a tendency to never even nominate people of color.

But the jury does influence the winners, indirectly, since they create the longlists. BAFTA nominated no POC in 2020 but most years, perhaps even every year before, they have done.

Not seeing this Negga win guys. Balfe I'd say is the alternate if they don't go with De Bose.

Gaga. She's the only one in her category that has a chance for the Oscar. Scanlan won't be nominated. And even if Hamm gets the 5th spot, she has too many strikes to win Best Actress - no SAG nod, Hollywood unknown, age.

Like I said, we all get one thing If Smith wins SAG, I don't think it's that impossible for him to take BAFTA. I've already enumerated why I think he was Top 2 there and not DiCaprio elsewhere, and Smith winning the Globe and SAG would make him at least a favorite going into BAFTA precursor-wise. Yes, Boseman lost last year to Hopkins with a better narrative, but the season isn't as drawn out as last year and The Power of the Dog is already likely winning Director and Supporting Actor, and the Academy's been in a love-spreading mood of late. And I think BAFTA would be more than conscious of their image, and while that's a very cynical way to look at things, I do think some voters would take that into account. If Cumberbatch wins SAG, then I'd favor him at BAFTA and the Oscar, but I do think if Smith wins the SAG, BAFTA will follow suit even if Benedict has the home court advantage.
