They have such a weird relationship with Kaminski. Never awarded him, snubbed him for War Horse and now this but nominated him for Bridge of Spies...they're a bit unpredictable when it comes to him. But I didn't think he'd miss for such a big movie/achievement. I'm still quite confident about his Oscar nod chances though.

Nightmare Alley needed that. It's having an outstanding guild run. Searchlight doing a great job as always.
I think WGA is quite possible, and that is a small step away from at least one of PGA or DGA.

Nightmare Alley is maybe the only English language film I saw all year iirc where the cinematography was a plot tool in how shadows and light were used and played across characters - the cinematography isn't just technically impressive - it's narratively essential to the broader movie......

It's surging very nicely. Wouldn't it be hilarious if Cooper suddenly snagged the fifth spot after he was initially in everyone else's predictions? It would certainly piss off a certain turtle.

Honestly, I wouldn't predict it even if the movie got PGA and DGA. He has zero buzz. But Blanchett making Supporting Actress looks way more likely now than it seemed after SAG.

Passing is another one. But honestly, I'm not even sure they watched the movie.

Oh, I'm not predicting it either, but man, if he could American Sniper his way to a surprise nomination again (and for a deserving performance, too!), I'd be delighted, especially as the likelihood of Cage taking that spot over the less deserving fifth-slot contenders is waning.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is hitting all the guilds it needs to. I think 01/27 is going to say alot about its standing with the industry. Can definitely hit WGA and PGA. Would not count out Joel Coen for a directing nom.

If I can't have Cage, give me Hunter.

Yeah, I've been hanging on to Cage for the last month or so and can't seem to let him go. Any of the ones that can oust him would all be such boring choices, given how open the spot is. If we got both Cage and Hunter, I think I'd explode.

I will take the most boring winners possible if it means I get PTA/Cage/Leto/Hunter nominations and a Sorkin-in-Screenplay snub.

That PTA is looking especially good. With how well Phantom Thread did, I'm definitely counting on his infinitely more accessible entry this year to overperform like crazy. I feel like it would have been a surefire bet to get in here if it wasn't such a dope ass year for the category.

He didn't even make the BAFTA long list. I don't think the 5th spot is as wide open as people here claim.

so what are the prerequisites to be eligible for the spotlight award. Is it just cinematography from non-guild members? Because Green Knight missing here is really strange

While this is true there are still passion noms that didn’t have precursors that the Academy makes every year so no reason Cage couldn’t be one of them.
