Great stuff from Ben Affleck. I absolutely love how honest he was. Affleck is basically saying out loud the quiet stuff. Of course, it is about ego and wanting to be loved by the elites of Hollywood.
Why do you think Affleck missed the best director nomination? I mean, he literally won the DGA, which is made up entirely of directors who work in the industry. And the movie itself won Picture, Screenplay, and Editing.

I guess him missing is a combo of three reasons (excluding the obvious 'they preferred other stuff' answer): 1. a certain number of the AMPAS directors being snooty about nominating Ben Affleck 2. a certain number of the AMPAS directors feeling adventurous that year and voting for folks like Haneke and Zeitlin 3. a certain number of the AMPAS directors feeling that he had his slot locked and going for reason #2 mentioned above
As for him winning DGA and all those other awards - it was easier for him to sweep those because everyone felt bad for him that year (and he certainly made it a point to milk that sympathy) and decided to support him with even more conviction than they probably would've had he been nominated.
I loved listening to him talk about it to Stern. Honest and cool.

I think it's not something to get worked up about; hell, he should be more pissed about The Town not getting more noms, as it's an infinitely better film than Argo. The academy (despite Redford/Beatty/Costner/Gibson/etc.) has always had some reluctance to nominate famous movie stars for Best Director. Now, if he directed 5 BP nominees and never got a BD nomination, that would be something to wonder about. Spielberg didn't get nommed for Jaws, Scorsese for Taxi Driver - we're talking iconic directors' directors for iconic movies. I think Affleck is a very good director and should keep directing movies, but the Argo snub was hardly meaningful. QT didn't get nominated that year, Bigelow didn't (coming off of a win). Shit happens!

I can understand his frustration. To us to seems petty. I mean, your film, your baby, your favorite child gets wide acclaim. Critics, audiences, and industry types love your film. You get nominated for producing the film. Your editor, screenwriter, and one of your key actors gets nominated. You SHOULD be happy. But in reality, he's miserable. He wants to get nominated for his directing and acting abilities, not his ability to finance a film. It appears to me two things: (1) Many Academy types dislike the concept of established actors going into directing. Affleck is known mostly for being an actor first and foremost. (2) They wanted to honor independent directors for the award. They felt they "deserved" more recognition. Bravo to Ben for being honest. I think his acting skills have dramatic improved since making Argo.

Who wouldn't be pissed if they'd been snubbed like that, especially with a BP winning pic? The most illuminating thing about this interview is the bit about everybody convincing him that he's gonna be nominated and him doing all the schmoozing necessary for that. We all discuss stuff like this every day and it may seem easy to sneer at people who are 'awards-hungry' but this interview is a good window to what it feels like from the inside to some of them. When your film is that successful and when you get that many comments from your studio that your nomination is a done deal...the disappointment is really quite relatable. Even though it's probably easier to deal with when you've got millions in your bank account

It wasn't that he was going to get nominated, but that this was his trophy to lose. When Affleck won for Best Producer, you could tell in his speech that he was emotionally devastated that the Academy never nominated him for Best Director.
If I were in Affleck's shoes, I would be angry as hell. I loved the fact he was emotional and furious, and thought about retiring from directing. I think there are a lot of people who will view Affleck's "complaining" as the spoiled brat. But in reality, you would react the same or even worse than he did.

This still clearly bothers him ten years after the fact. The movie did win BP, his career is still going strong, he's dating JLO. Tomorrow he could go and get pretty much any movie greenlit as a director with a budget of at least like 35 mil.. Who cares if you've got a gold statue or not?
Also interesting that he's only directed one film since then, is this him "taking his ball and going home" since he thinks he's never going to win BD? Some people make movies or the joy in making movies and because they believe in the film, not just to try and win an award.

It was fucking AWESOME that he was snubbed for that pedestrian piece of shit movie. Haneke and Zeitlin deserved the nomination way more than he did.

Yeah, that's even worse. When everyone tells you you're gonna win Director and you end up being left out altogether...even the BP win must be colored by disappointment. But hey, at least that Director snub made the BP win even more certain.

Live by Night was a huge flop, and then he got tied up with Batman and both projects contributed to his alcoholism. Think he just need a break but he’s still been tied to new projects. I’d expect a new directorial project in the next couple years.

He tried to write and direct a Batman film (the same project that ultimately morphed into the one Matt Reeves is doing, actually), but those plans fell through. And being attached to the DCEU likely took up a lot of his creative energies. And it probably didn't help that Live By Night was (unfairly, in my eyes) savaged and cut to ribbons.

I am so glad Ang Lee won. He won his 2nd Oscar for Best Director and got a Standing Ovation and cheers from the audience.

Also agree with this. Affleck probably did deserve a nod but a well directed thriller is not comparable to what Lee did on Life of Pi.

I actually felt bad for him because he didn't scoring a nod. It's not like it was his first movie. At that point, he had directed two prior critical favs and two people to acting nods.

What a surprise: people in Hollywood have insecure egos, just like most people. I totally get where he's coming from on this and think most people would feel a similar kind of way about it.
As for why it happened, I think it was a combination of voters in the directing branch thinking he was a shoo-in and so they went for more dark horse passion votes as well as some voters being hoity-toity over nominating Affleck. All of the case of actors-turned-directors that get Academy attention are cases of well-received or well-liked actors currying that favor to another branch, but Affleck was not particularly liked as an actor (the industry awards completely snubbed him of deserved consideration for Hollywoodland even in a weak field) and he was probably remembered more for his tabloid debacles than he was for having won an Oscar writing Good Will Hunting.

And remember: so many people credited Matt Damon for that movie's success and thought he'd done Ben a solid and gave him a writing credit. Affleck had to really prove himself, and I think no matter what, individual recognition for acting or direction feels like it's going to be a lot harder than most of his peers primarily because of his tabloid reputation. Which is a shame, because I think he is an immensely talented actor and director.

IDK guys, as you all noted he's already won an off camera Oscar for Good Will Hunting and it's not like a well chronicled personal life has ever hurt people like Leo or Jack Nicholson with awards. I think it's more that Argo had a broad enough consensus to win BP in a pretty open year with 3-4 big contenders but not enough passion to get Affleck in for BD. I do think some of his disappointment stems from people telling him he was a lock to win, which was clearly not an accurate statement with Lee making such a technically innovative film and big names like Spielberg and Tarantino having acclaimed movies out that year.

DiCaprio and Nicholson didn't have Pearl Harbor or Gigli. Affleck didn't have nearly the amount of cache that those guys did, and it took a long time for people to come around on him as an actor (a lot of people still haven't).
