I don't think anyone would call his frustration petty tbh. Who wouldn't be pissed if they'd been snubbed like that, especially with a BP winning pic? The most illuminating thing about this interview is the bit about everybody convincing him that he's gonna be nominated and him doing all the schmoozing necessary for that. We all discuss stuff like this every day and it may seem easy to sneer at people who are 'awards-hungry' but this interview is a good window to what it feels like from the inside to some of them. When your film is that successful and when you get that many comments from your studio that your nomination is a done deal...the disappointment is really quite relatable. Even though it's probably easier to deal with when you've got millions in your bank account Affleck was told he was going to win Best Director. It wasn't that he was going to get nominated, but that this was his trophy to lose. When Affleck won for Best Producer, you could tell in his speech that he was emotionally devastated that the Academy never nominated him for Best Director.
If I were in Affleck's shoes, I would be angry as hell. I loved the fact he was emotional and furious, and thought about retiring from directing. I think there are a lot of people who will view Affleck's "complaining" as the spoiled brat. But in reality, you would react the same or even worse than he did.
I wouldn't. Anybody who's really clued into how the Oscars works knows you'll often do some of your best work as a director and get nowhere near a nomination. I'd only be pissed if there was a pattern of dismissal from the Academy. Getting a BD nomination has always been tricky.

I get that it was very much expected and it stung when he didn't even get nominated. But I, frankly, didn't think he was the best director that year anyway. Nor did I think Argo was the best film - and it actually ran away with best picture. You can tell here he took that snub very personally. I think he feels the directors didn't respect him enough. It definitely was an unusual situation.
But if he's genuine about not making it his metric anymore, then that's the way to go. I don't think the Oscars know what the fuck they are doing most of the time. That's why I've been jaded by them for years now. I believe their best function is to bring attention to a film. I don't rely on them to measure what's the best. Look at how many greats have lost and how much crap has won.
And lastly, where are the George C. Scotts of today? I want to crack up at a "goddamned meat parade!" type quote. That energy is missing.

Burning question... Are we going to call him "thirsty" and "entitled"? Or are words like that only reserved for women who want to win?

I'm not going to call someone "thirsty" for campaigning to promote his movie but his reaction is clearly entitled and IDK why so many people are defending it here.

I actually think a woman in his exact situation would have more people on her side. A woman directing the best picture winner and not even getting a nomination for best director would be a weird, misogynistic look. If Jane Campion's film wins best picture and she doesn't even get nominated for directing it, I'm sure 10 years later people wouldn't kill her for saying these things (not saying she's kissing ass like Affleck admits he was, but let's say she did and then voices that she learned a lesson from it). People probably kill the actresses more for being thirsty for a win.

PromNightCarrie - I was definitely referring to actresses. Those words have been used countless times on this very forum in reference to Jessica Chastain and Glenn Close, among others.

I see this as different because his situation was unusual (we've had several directors who didn't win for directing the best picture winner, but he didn't even get nominated which has only happened twice in the 1930s and for Driving Miss Daisy lol), so it's worth discussion. And here he's reflecting on his admittedly thirsty behavior years ago and how the outcome changed his outlook. Maybe actresses might get more heat than actors. Jessica Chastain is getting it now probably because she's in the conversation this year (and Close was recent?).
