Awww man. I was looking forward to a Scorsese v Spiel showdown. Sounds like they just preferred option two: more time to edit and a larger theatrical period. I think it would've been real tough to edge out Spielberg, especially if Chazelle is also in the mix as well with a huge Hollywood bonanza. And it also likely clears the road for Michelle Williams with Gladstone potentially out of the way.

I kind of felt that if both movies were similarly acclaimed the advantage would be to Marty since he only has the one. I do think that Spielberg is very much in the drivers seat now if this is true (the article does read as a little speculative). I think that Chazalle already having one on just one nomination and Babylon being very depraved gives Spielberg the early advantage.

Eh, some of the early screening reports on Babylon have suggested it's not nearly as depraved as the script. This also almost guarantees it'll be the nomination leader and makes it hitting all 4 acting categories a lot more plausible (Calva is still a bit uncertain but this certainly improves Smart and especially Pitt's odds dramatically in supporting).

That’s a bit of a bummer. I loved the depraved script. Also Pitt kind of gave me leading vibes. I mean, Calva is literally the main character and nobody runs dual lead actors anymore. So it's either run a completely egregious campaign for Calva in supporting or run Pitt in lead. I guess something similar happened with Jesse James so it's not outside the realm of possibility but if they run Pitt lead/Calva supporting they risk both missing. I don't think there's much doubt Pitt easily gets into supporting in this field if Killers is out so at least there's 1 assured nom instead of 2 question marks.

I think with Calva being an unknown who is probably not likely to be nominated they will run them both as lead. I don’t think he’s getting in Pitt’s way. He has the much juicer role. Calva is just kind of an observer. I’m predicting him to be nominated for lead.

It's still unconfirmed.
Nothing official, the whole Deadline article is based on "The Dish hears that..".

I don't really understand this. Tarantino took OUATIH to Cannes because he always took a film to Cannes when possible; he loves the festival. Scorsese doesn't care for entering festival competition (he said it in an interview somewhere years ago), so taking this movie to Cannes for a out-of-competition slot like it's a Pixar movie or something seems bizarre. It's a Marty/Leo movie, so it needs no extra publicity beyond trailers. And if they do want a big awards haul, is it wise to enter the race halfway into the year?

Because it's not about what Scorsese wants. It's about what Apple TV+ wants. They shelled out the GDP of a small nation to bankroll this picture, and their aim is to cement their standing as a prime arthouse studio. And arthouse studios go to Cannes, to Venice. This move solidifies the studio's rep and they get the most bang for their buck.

It's a Scorsese film starring DiCaprio. It's going to make bank regardless of when it comes out. And AppleTV+ just had a film with an extremely early screening wins Best Picture, and two years before that the Palme d'Or winner and the Tarantino that premiered at Cannes were big Oscar successes. Scorsese's movie will have the same impact with awards and box office regardless of whether it appears at Cannes or not.

The release shift is still unconfirmed but disappointing if true. On the other hand, it would open up that much more room in a season that's already looking crowded as hell.
I'm sure we'll know within weeks if this is definitely not dropping in December... Supposedly it has an official Jan 2023 release in Italy which wouldn't make sense for a Cannes premier, and supposedly (a la World of Reel so IDK...) it has a completed teaser ready to drop. Hard to tell which are just rumors at this point but definitely no word from Apple or Paramount yet so I'm waiting for more info.

Here's hoping. Scorsese hasn't been much for festivals but Apple+ wants that prestige.

Finally we can stop with the castration of the MAR board: Tom Cruise didn't "save Hollywood's ass", Tom Cruise is an ass, Maverick isn't that good, and I remember him jumping on a couch for Katie Holmes ffs, if anything I'm surprised he didn't kiss Spielbergs ass in that photo of them fellating each other ..........EEAAO is better than a "6" on a scale of 1 to 10 the same way your girlfriend is which means it's not and.......Michelle Yeoh deserves to win an acting award for "representation" the way I deserve to win anything for ever being "nice"........STFU .......all of you.......put on your big boy pants for Godsakes.........masterpiece, incoming With the Oscars coming into view, and the end of the 2023 awards season, we turn out attention to the next round of movies.
Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is at the top of all lists for this year’s new crop. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, “Flower Moon” is set in the West in the 1920s, and it’s based on the book by David Grann. The story concerns the real life murders of Native Americans in Oklahoma when their land is discovered to be sitting on oil fields.
I’m told that the Cannes Film Festival is chomping at the bit to premiere the film, not in competition and not for opening night. It would be just the prestige of that trio walking the red carpet.
So what’s the issue? I’m told by sources that “Flower Moon” is currently clocking in at three hours, twenty minutes. This is nothing new for Scorsese, whose every new film starts at super sized until Oscar winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker summons a succinct two and a half hour final cut out of Scorsese’s masterful shots. But Cannes can’t program such a long film, so they’re waiting to see how this all works out.www.showbiz411.com/2023/02/19/source-scorseses-flower-moon-will-go-to-cannes-if-he-can-cut-it-down-from-three-hours-20-minutes

Hmmmmmmm......... ***************************** West revealed that the film’s star Leonardo DiCaprio had seen it, however, and told her it was a masterpiece. “I was talking to Leo about it. We had lunch before I came here. He said, ‘Jackie, I think we worked on a masterpiece’. I thought for Leo to say that, was something. He doesn’t say that lightly. He has been in the business since he was a little boy,” said West, who has been close to DiCaprio ever since they worked together in the sub-zero temperatures of The Revenant. deadline.com/2023/03/costume-designer-jacqueline-west-shout-out-scorsese-killers-of-the-flower-moon-dune-2-1235298821/
