Because of this branch's unpredictable and generally high brow taste they are usually one of the hardest to predict most years but it feels even more so this year because we have two already seen festival darling Best Picture contenders... *Branagh *Campion
Five unseen films by Academy favorites... *McKay *Scott *Del Toro *PTA *Spielberg
Also various high brow/foreign contenders that are the stuff this branch loves... *Coen *Almodovar *Heder *Villeneuve (doesn't really fit here but he doesn't fit the other two really either) *Trier *Larrain *Sorrento *Etc (It's very hard to see this one coming sometimes)
Right now I'm going to guess Branagh, Campion, Del Toro, PTA and Coen but who fucking knows. I wouldn't be surprised if not one person guesses this 5/5.

Right now: Branagh, Campion, Coen, Del Toro, Villeneuve. PTA as the alternate.

I’m getting nervous McKay will take a spot here. I can’t stand him but if he can get in for Vice…

Very tough. At the moment I'd say: - Campion - Branagh - del Toro - PTA - McKay But looking at my own prediction I realize that I don't like it and that it feels wrong I'm just not sure what other combo to come up with as of now. If there's gonna be a non-English language movie nominated here I'd bet on Sorrentino.

yeah this is tough one for sure. Right now I have:
1. Coen 2. Campion 3. Branagh 4. PTA 5. Scott
Coen is the only one that feels truly safe to me on paper. Del Toro I'd have at #6 for no real reason except I think the likelihood of Nightmare Alley being a critical disappointment is stronger the other unseens here, except for maybe Gucci which I'm banking just being a huge crowdpleaser. Almovodar, Larrain and McKay all seem possible too.

I wonder if it matches 5/5 this year because we are dealing with a lot of high profile directors this season.

1. Jane Campion (hopefully she becomes the 3rd woman to win Best Director. ) 2. Denis Villeneuve (DUNE will just be too big & epic to ignore) 3. Adam McKay (like it or not, the Academy seems to really dig him and Don't Look Up has a loaded cast led by Leonardo Dicaprio) 4. Sir Ridley Scott (Either for House of Gucci or The Last Duel. Take your pick) 5. Kenneth Branagh (All the mentions of this hack getting nominated or possibly winning is making me want to vomit but he will probably get a nom)

I’m not predicting him yet but I don’t think Reinaldo Marcus Green is impossible.

Are you predicting A Hero to win International Feature?? Way too early to say. I was just wondering because Farhadi is a very interesting prediction to me, as I don't think his film is the IFF frontrunner. At the end of the day, I don't think we're going to get a foreign director nominated this year anyway, but if we were, I'd lean towards Trier.

At the end of the day, I don't think we're going to get a foreign director nominated this year anyway, but if we were, I'd lean towards Trier. I actually think Sorrentino is the likeliest "foreign" contender, far more so than Trier (after seeing his film yesterday, I do think it's a contender for IFF but not at all in any other categories). Sorrentino has become a big name on his own, has Netflix backing him up, Grand Jury Prize at Venice and I think the director's branch will eat up the autobiographical nature of the film and his tragic backstory and it's big enough in scope to land him a nod too. Best Director is shaping up to be the most competitive and exciting category this year for me.

Branagh Campion del Toro PTA Villeneuve This category suddenly feels pretty straightforward. Swap del Toro with Spielberg, and I think that's our 5.
