This category suddenly feels pretty straightforward. Swap del Toro with Spielberg, and I think that's our 5. Is Director ever that straight forward though? Perhaps not, but it's a bit of a strange year, with so many contenders faltering.

I would probably have the same predictions as you but with this branch it would be more surprising if there wasn’t a big surprise Oscar morning.

Should probably add Hamaguchi to the list of high brow/foreign possibilities.

My predictions are similar but I’d expect one out of left field nom replacing someone here.

And I still think Ducournau gets a BAFTA nod.

It will be interesting to see whether any of the foreign contenders picks up steam, and if so, which one. The EFA's over the weekend might help with that a bit.

Drive My Car seems to be the critics pick of all the foreign language films at the moment, so I don’t think a Hamaguchi nod here is impossible.

Neon seems to be prioritising Flee and Titane in the International Film category which seems like a mistake haha.

Kenneth Branagh Paul Thomas Anderson Jane Campion Steven Spielberg
The fifth slot is a true wild card. Can’t wait to see what the directors’ branch has up its sleeves.

I think Villeneuve is looking good for a nomination at the moment.

Yeah, I really don't know how Villeneuve isn't a safe bet at the moment. The Branagh/Campion/Spielberg/Villeneuve/PTA five seems secure. Which probably means that there's gonna be some shocking upset. Hopefully Branagh...

Here's mine:
1. Jane Campion - Won NY and LA Best Director prize. Globe and Critics Choice nominee. 2. Kenneth Branagh - Globe and Critics Choice nominee. 3. Steven Spielberg - Globe and Critics Choice nominee. 4. Denis Villeneuve - Globe and Critics Choice nominee. 5. Paul Thomas Anderson - Critics Choice nominee. Won NBR Best Director trophy.
Still in play Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Boston), Guillermo del Toro (Critics Choice), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Globe), Reinaldo Marcus Green, Sian Heder, Adam McKay, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Joel Coen.
I have a sneaky feeling Hamaguchi is going to sneak into the top 5. But for now, I am going first and foremost with the directors nominated at the Globes and Critics Choice awards.

I really think Hamaguchi or a far less-likely Ducornau upset could happen. The Director's branch has been very keen on nominating foreign directors as of late- Pawilkowksi, BJH, Vinterberg.

Gotta say, having now seen "Drive My Car" it seems to me that Hamaguchi would be a pretty atypical Director nominee. Yes, this branch occasionally goes for non-English language movies but they're usually flashy big deal foreign successes. "Drive My Car" doesn't quite seem like a super big thing to me but that's just my perception. Flashy though? It certainly isn't. A 3-hour Japanese slow-burn doesn't really scream Best Director branch to me tbh.

I think McKay's going to break through and fuck over a far more deserving candidate.

I sadly think PTA may be the one in 5th and in danger of getting fucked over by McKay.
