Should we try one for males? Daniel Day-Lewis
Robert De Niro
Leonardo DiCaprio
Al Pacino
Denzel Washington
Not really sure beyond those picks tbh... To me there's just no way any of those guys ^ (except DiCap) will be held in the same esteem level as Tom Hanks - and I like ALL of those guys better than Tom Hanks - people twist themselves into knots arguing "against" him - he's too nice, he never played bad guys blah blah but people love him so much they don't see that the same way at all - that's message board dumb-assery: He's got somewhere around 10 BP nominees already - more to come - he has A TON of other classics - family classics too - his films can be watched dozens of times in the cases of some of those, they are made for watching on your TV which is where cinema is going .........he's going to win 3 Oscars, maybe even by next year (and play a viillain). People rate an actor by how much they like an actor - America loves him.......his being "too nice"is the f'n point, not the problem ........ DiCap could rival him but no one else that I see. I'd add Brando, Nicholson, on the list and I think there are classic male actors who would hover around the top 10 - Newman, Lemmon, Eastwood, Stewart - I also think Joaquin Phoenix has positioned himself or will as the "alternative" actor - what Depp or PSH were - where he stands removed from his peers yet not small time - in a way that relates to this board - all the others are acclaimed like Radiohead, he's acclaimed like The Replacements........ If that hasn't happened yet..........It certainly will ...... Side note: My "friend" (acquaintance!) - movie critic (he's on RT!) told me Phoenix is just incredible in C'Mon, C'Mon and when I asked him could he get nodded he said "I don't know, but that's not really the point of the performance" ..............which sort of sums him up in that "alternative" way ..... You're right than Hanks is beloved (because his 90s was ridiculous), but I think his filmography in the past two decades has hurt his clout with general audiences. That's true of De Niro and Pacino too, but they have too many all-time level 70s-90s movies to cede their supremacy on that basis. And Leo is crafting a wholly unique sort of career that we probably won't see upstaged anytime soon (props to Brad Pitt though on his very serious emulation in the mid-00s onward). Wock will always be respected, but he makes too many movies that don't register at all. 112 people watched it, there's no 10 or 15 years later re-evaluation, etc. Denzel hasn't been in a really good movie in a while (maybe Unstoppable was the last one), but he's undeniably far more versatile than someone like Hanks, and that's just obvious at this point.

General audiences love Hanks like they love Morgan Freeman. He's America's Dad right. His brand is likability and relatability, which is great as far as it goes. But their is a fear and intimidation factor with general audiences that commands a different type of respect, that Hanks will never have, just like Jack Lemmon never had it. Denzel has it. Pacino & DeNiro had it. Brando had it.

I don't disagree but I say this all the time .....Denzel Washington is more versatile than Hanks - but that's only relevant when you compare them to each other directly and if you do that - what's also obvious at this point - is Hanks has the filmography, the better directors, the range of films - comedy too -, more beloved films. The "average moviegoer" sees his positive attributes more impressively than the ones he loses IF you compare those 2 guys head to head which you shouldn't for this question............that's all I'm saying......they don't sit there and compare all these guys to each other - that's message board circle jerk stuff. I'm just saying Hanks checks the most boxes. That's not my personal opinion on them all as actors but on how the "general public" sees them or will one day. On the other hand DiCaprio I'm assuming "the average mainstream film fan" will say has the filmography, A list directors, range including comedies, box office......... so he conceivably checks off the most anyway.......and even tops Hanks........it was just hard to say that at 46

What are we defining as "general audiences?" Are we including people who have seen maybe 15 non-Netflix movies the past 5 years, or are we limiting it to people who know how Brando influenced film acting? Because sometimes the way people talk on this board makes me think they don't realize random people are probably more likely to say Billy Madison is their favorite movie than A Streetcar Named Desire.

The versatility discussion reminded me of a thought I've had before about all the talk we've had about Hanks's filmography. The strength of Hanks's filmography is relative, but one of the really unique things about it is the eclecticism. He's had classics, or at least really successful movies, in basically every genre except horror. Prestige dramas (Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan, Green Mile, Catch Me If You Can), adventure (Apollo 13, Cast Away, Captain Phillips), romantic comedy (Splash, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail), family (Big, Toy Story, Polar Express). What this does for his legacy is that pretty much any random person you pull of the street is going to have at least a couple Hanks films he really likes. I think in higher brow places like this we underestimate how huge the comedies and family films are in why he's so widely beloved. Now, Hanks himself pretty much always plays a similar character, Leo and Denzel are much more versatile in that regard, but not in the films themselves, Leo pretty much just sticks to prestige drama and Denzel mixes prestige drama and action. That's nothing out of the ordinary, most big stars work primarily in one genre and maybe have a second one they dip their toe into (often in the form of an action star who either sprinkles in dramas to "get serious" or comedies to soften up his image). Really the only other modern big star who can rival Hanks for genre eclecticism is Cruise during his prime in the 90's, but of course he's pretty much become exclusively an action guy since then. Jimmy Stewart as well from classic Hollywood, and much like Hanks I think that's a big part of why he was so beloved.

So more the former.

Yeah, his 50's stuff is more limited to classic Hollywood buffs these days unfortunately but just about every American sees The Godfather at some point in their life. Apocalypse Now and the Reeve Superman are very widely seen as well.

People can say anything they want about MAR - but you only see sh it like this on the Godforsaken Gold Derby - they have this same thread up I see. This guys name is "Dave" ...........um.........Dave comments on acting.........I ask you .........should he though? August 31, 2021 at 9:52 am #1204426633 Seems about right except I’d swap Nicholson and DeNiro. Also, Bale should be in this list.
August 31, 2021 at 10:41 am #1204426794 Never seen a single thing James Stewart was in. I just had to google him.

Yeah, the best actor list isn't surprising because those are the typical "best actor of their generation" men that people think of. The actress list is actually comprised of mostly golden age ones. The more modern women have a certain prestige behind their name which is why they come up. The famous ones are spot-on for representing today. Had it been the Julia Roberts of 2000 she would be either second to Tom Hanks or above him. Tom Cruise would be in the top 3 too.
