I would take that Yougov thing with a huge grain of salt considering it claims Danny DeVito is better known with the US public than Denzel Washington or Tom Hanks.

I don't buy this YouGov list (Morgan Freeman first on every demographic target really??) A few things: 1. He's first in popularity, but not fame for any demographic. Which makes sense to me given he's known at the bare minimum as the guy with the awesome voice. What's not to like about that? 2. Their popularity criteria is not about how much each actor is liked, just a simple pass-fail on whether or not they are liked. 3. He's not first for Baby Boomers at least.

Always Sunny, being in a shit-ton of Tim Burton movies (Depp rates as the most known actor), and being a meme. He may not be a draw like Washington or Hanks, but I can see an argument that he's about as well-known to the general public.

Why is that so hard to believe? I know right? Morgan Freeman is the black Tom Hanks. His range might not be enormous and he isn't always at the forefront of GOAT debates, but his likability rating with audiences is through the fucking roof! If Hanks is America's Dad, Freeman is America's Grandapa. Everyone loves him. Even in the UK, he was voted the most popular contemporary actor of 2020: yougov.co.uk/ratings/entertainment/popularity/contemporary-actors/allFor my money the greatest narration voice ever.

Actually these particular Google results or the Yougov polls - show how movie fans (or people in general) live by Argumentum ad populum - the false idea that something is "true" because the majority think so. Like nowhere in any of these polls is Morgan Freeman anything - at all - other than "not hated by almost, anyone" Do you like Morgan Freeman? Yeah ....sure..... It's amazing how much we live on polls and lists when they're really just fight starters rather than fight settlers.....

I get why Freeman makes it, but I think Freeman is a guy you tend to respect more than love. People get less attached to him and his characters than they do with Denzel. Not saying nobody loves him, just saying his characters which tend to be sympathetic poor sods or elders or school principals (like in Lean On Me) seems to hint "guy you respect" but I think way more people get attached to Denzel's characters. Again not saying absolutely nobody loves him, just less than Denzel, in general imo.
And.... Ooohhhhh ohhhhh, I redid it with slightly different characters, and I got this:
Anyways, my new redone version....
"Greatest Actors of All Time"
1. Robert DeNiro 2. Marlon Brando 3. Tom Hanks 4. Jack Nicholson 5. Daniel Day-Lewis 6. Al Pacino 7. Denzel Washington 8. Anthony Hopkins 9. Leonardo DiCaprio 10. Dustin Hoffman 11. Laurence Olivier 12. Morgan Freeman
"Greatest Actresses of all All Time"
1. Meryl Streep 2. Katharine Hepburn 3. Bette Davis 4. Elizabeth Taylor 5. Audrey Hepburn 6. Ingrid Bergman 7. Julianne Moore 8. Cate Blanchett 9. Jodie Foster 10. Vivien Leigh 11. Grace Kelly 12. Kate Winslet
"Most Popular Hollywood Actors"
1. Tom Hanks 2. Leonardo DiCaprio 3. Johnny Depp 4. Tom Cruise 5. Scarlett Johansson 6. Will Smith 7. Jennifer Lawrence 8. Denzel Washington 9. Robert Downey Jr. 10. Robert DeNiro 11. Brad Pitt 12. Al Pacino

No Kidman is sort of interesting - especially in comparison to Winslet / Blanchett and Liz Taylor / Grace Kelly being on the list ......again this is a ridiculous list based on algorithm and searches - it doesn't "mean" anything - but that's a lot of names that sort of hover around her in people she's often compared too and in some older actresses I always compare her to (because I'm sort of a genius with this stuff ) - Liz Taylor specifically - because Kidman in a lot of ways has a level of fame like Taylor's .......both known for many other things outside of acting too..........and of course she played Grace Kelly. The female list is far more interesting than the males - I mean the males I could have guessed, but the females not so much........ "Greatest Actresses of all All Time" 1. Meryl Streep 2. Katharine Hepburn 3. Bette Davis 4. Elizabeth Taylor5. Audrey Hepburn 6. Ingrid Bergman 7. Julianne Moore 8. Cate Blanchett9. Jodie Foster 10. Vivien Leigh 11. Grace Kelly 12. Kate Winslet

Kate WinsletI think the female list is more predictable because besides Kelly, every single one made this boards Top 25. In the real world, Kelly is considered a great actress not just a star which this board considers her as. Sure she's known for tabloids but people who dont go on IMDB definitely dont see much difference between her or Audrey or Liz, but the pecking order here is 1) Audrey 2) Liz 3) Kelly Like you said, these tend to scramble so it doesn't mean too much but these definitely look frightfully similar to the lists made on this board. So that's something to take into account, imo . Its also worth noting that these lists skip the 70s and 80s and go directly to the golden age/classic Hollywood and jumps straight to the 90s then 00s. I guess Dunaway, Keaton, Lange, Spacek, Burstyn, and Winger gets the short end of the stick.

Yeah, I mean all the men made our top 50 too ........but the men are so opposite of those females - only Brando is pre-60s; No Newman, no Lemmon, no Stewart in these - who always figure in our IMDB/MAR polls top 10 ........but here replaced by more contemporary actors Washington (13 in our MAR poll), Hanks (20), DiCaprio in the (top 30) .........eventually people die .......sigh I do think that "how many Oscars you have" thing really affects this poll - 2/3rds of the names have 2+ - 4 males out of 12 and 4 females out of 12 have only one ......but you have to have one................... so tough luck Clift, Grant, Close, Winger, Huppert, Burton, O'Toole, Finney

pacinoyes - LOL. You're right. It's missing Lemmon, Hackman, and Newman. Well I searched and Newman barely missed. I think he was #13 or #14 so he's close by and not significantly far. But.... in no world is Hackman and Lemmon this high on the hierarchy of great actors. That's just the truth. It's only Movie Awards/Oscar Buzz that has those 2 people that high. Not even Film General have those 2 near the Top 25. I think if you go on Film General, you'll get roughly the same list except Bogart replaces Lemmon, and Mifune for sure replaces Hackman just because of all the Kurosawa fanboys over there yet not here. Hackman as I've remember you said before, is a tier lower than DePac, Nicholson, and Hoffman on the 70s scale. Maybe he's not less great, but as you said he feels bit peripheral and just not as big by reputation. Well..... Denzel, Leo, and Hanks probably makes any list irl over PSH or Phoenix - PTA is always bigger on the internet and film world than they are irl. And yeah... maybe the Oscars matter, so I'm shocked of the omission of McDormand. She has 3 times the Oscars of Winslet and Kidman and Mirren, yet Kidman and Mirren featured on the first list and Winslet featured on the 2nd. I don't think McDormand is perceived as strong an actress as this board would like to tell you despite her huge awards cabinet.... but most of them earned in the 2010s where award shows inflated by the count. Viola Davis nowhere near these lists is also surprising if awards really do matter that much.

I think the general public would think Viola Davis over some of those names for a "general audience" ........... McDormand because she's that lady who wins for everything they see on TV etc. Maybe even Theron or Adams ......... I like your list much better than what the GP would likely pick tbh ......

Not really sure beyond those picks tbh... To me there's just no way any of those guys ^ (except DiCap) will be held in the same esteem level as Tom Hanks - and I like ALL of those guys better than Tom Hanks - people twist themselves into knots arguing "against" him - he's too nice, he never played bad guys blah blah but people love him so much they don't see that the same way at all - that's message board dumb-assery: He's got somewhere around 10 BP nominees already - more to come - he has A TON of other classics - family classics too - his films can be watched dozens of times in the cases of some of those, they are made for watching on your TV which is where cinema is going .........he's going to win 3 Oscars, maybe even by next year (and play a viillain). People rate an actor by how much they like an actor - America loves him.......his being "too nice"is the f'n point, not the problem ........ DiCap could rival him but no one else that I see. I'd add Brando, Nicholson, on the list and I think there are classic male actors who would hover around the top 10 - Newman, Lemmon, Eastwood, Stewart - I also think Joaquin Phoenix has positioned himself or will as the "alternative" actor - what Depp or PSH were - where he stands removed from his peers yet not small time - in a way that relates to this board - all the others are acclaimed like Radiohead, he's acclaimed like The Replacements........ If that hasn't happened yet..........It certainly will ...... Side note: My "friend" (acquaintance!) - movie critic (he's on RT!) told me Phoenix is just incredible in C'Mon, C'Mon and when I asked him could he get nodded he said "I don't know, but that's not really the point of the performance" ..............which sort of sums him up in that "alternative" way .....
