Depends how and where you define "dominate". Prestige or popularity? Both? TV or film or streaming? Or all three? The industry is more fractured than ever, with A-list actors (and especially actresses) criss-crossing between TV and film, on streaming platforms. Right, now, Nicole Kidman goes into the second year of this decade as probably the most dominant/powerful actress in the prestige TV sphere, and looking at her jam packed schedule of projects, that reign doesn't look like it will end anytime soon. The insane ratings for both Big Little Lies and The Undoing (which she served as a producer on both) has given her a level of clout in that sphere that is hard to underestimate. It also helps her in movies, as Meet The Ricardos was a major get, as far as a leading film role for an actress in her 50's. Someone like Cate Blanchett is potentially in that sphere, but I don't think she knows quite what resonates with TV audiences like Kidman. Reese Witherspoon also deserves a mention for her influence in that sphere, though she seems to be getting more credit as a producer than an actress. The same actresses in their 30's or thereabouts will continue to receive the most opportunities on film for the immediate future: Margot Robbie, Emma Stone etc. As far as new (er) actresses, I imagine they will be taking the same approach as someone like Kidman and cross between film, TV and streaming. I don't really see anyone trying to be like 90's Julia Roberts or even Jennifer Lawrence in the 2010's , where they just did movies and relied on having strong box office returns to consolidate their status. Hard to tell really. Some of them look like hot shit now (ie Anya Taylor-Joy), but we could easily be wondering in 5 or 6 years why she didn't take off like we assumed she might. Zendaya seems the safest bet for these younger actresses as far as popularity goes. She's had those Disney Fans supporting her career since she was a kid in the 2000's and they aren't going anywhere, and are invested in her continued success. And she is being taken seriously as a "prestige" actress (Emmy winner etc), so things like Oscar nominations or wins seem likely. Welp....as we hit the 4th year of this decade, turns out I was right that Robbie and Stone would still be the dominant forces for women on film for this decade, and that's certainly been underlined in the last year. Interesting that Stone only got 2 votes on this poll.

Fun fact: Mulligan and Colman are the only 2 actresses so far this decade to get 2 nominations.
But yes, right now I agree that Robbie and Stone are at the top if you combine a number of factors. I think. read somewhere that Robbie is taking a break from acting though.

It's pretty interesting how Mulligan's career resurged after a pretty underwhelming run in the 2010s.

People were a little bit too bullish on Anya Taylor-Joy looking how much she dominated this poll, but I guess people were still high on The Queen's Gambit. I think Last Night In Soho whiffing took out some of her momentum. Furiosa needs to make a difference for her. I think I was also right about Kidman continuing to dominate the streaming and TV space. Almost everything she touches there is a hit. Why were she ( and Blanchett ) not on this poll again? Very insulting

Pugh. Every director thinks of her first in her age group. She'll probably be in a Tarantino, PTA, and Spielberg film within the next three years.

Pugh. Every director thinks of her first in her age group. She'll probably be in a Tarantino, PTA, and Spielberg film within the next three years. We are already 4 years into the decade. All Pugh has to show for it is Black Widow ( one of Marvel's first box office failures, because of the pandemic era), To Wonder, Don't Worry Darling and A Good Person. Films people would struggle to name. Oppenheimer is a big movie, but her role isn't and half of Hollywood is in the movie. So I think so far this decade, she's kind of just making up the numbers. No breakout hits carried by her, not come close to another Oscar nod? What exactly is she dominating? She's got Dune 2 upcoming, but I suspect Zendaya will be the actress. most marketed by that film.

Michelle Williams currently has leading roles lined up for Spielberg, Todd Haynes, and Kelly Reichardt, a more impressive looking upcoming slate than anyone on this list, so...her. I don't think Michelle Williams has a lot of popular appeal or star quality. Getting prestige project opportunities doesn't neccesarily mean "dominate" in the larger sense of popular culture interest. It just means the industry thinks you are a good actress. Few young actresses get more prestige opportunities than Sairose Ronan, but I never quite see her as having the starpower or audience appeal of people like Emma Stone or Margot Robbie. Williams is in that category (except Ronan, for all her limited star quality, still has more of it than Williams). A solid prestige actress, but low in star quality. People like Zendaya and Anya-Taylor Joy have a much higher ceiling than Williams as they can combine star quality/popular appeal with prestige. Feel like I called this pretty correct as well.

How is what Stone doing a bad thing? Lanthimos is getting her film kudos and Oscar recognition, Cruella has given her a big movie franchise which she is front and centre off, and prestige TV is seen as a positive thing for movie stars, and has been for years. Stone has all bases covered. What she is doing is actually dominating, not just making up the numbers. Ronan has been struggling this decade so far, but may be turning a corner with The Outrun and Blitz. She is still a 4 time Oscar nominee, and probably gets first look at a lot of these indie projects Pugh has found herself in. I like Pugh, but I don't think she has any particular advantage anymore. It's brutally competitive out there for actresses her age, and her project selection needs to improve quickly. Those 4 Oscar nods give Ronan a fair bit breathing room to have a weak run before coming back with a big performance again. Pugh can't eat off her 1 Oscar nomination forever. I don't think she's much more up the food chain than the likes of Jodie Comer or Vanessa Kirby.

Every auteur is chasing Pugh right now. Nolan was basically begging her to be in the movie, apologizing about the size of the part. You think he's not offering her something way bigger in the next 8 years?

It's hard to say, really, but I'm gonna talk about three names in particular. Emma Stone really is making a hard play at being the predominant actress of her generation, and she certainly is racking up auteurs and industry giants quite impressively. Cruella will be a sign of her bankability, but it's pretty much foolproof to do a Disney film and have it make money. She's also been dipping her toes into the stage and has done television to acclaim as well, so I can really see her being the force to be reckoned with this decade. It just depends on whether or not she gets burned out or takes hiatuses. Margot Robbie's really making a strong play at being a force for behind-the-scenes production as well and she obviously has been racking up cred left and right, and she's got several likely Oscar plays on the docket already. Bet on her to finally be an Oscar winner by decade's end. I can definitely see her taking a leaf from Reese Witherspoon's playbook and being someone who brings projects to life, even if she isn't necessarily in them. Olivia Colman's got strong momentum and she's showing up all over the place, and for an actress in her forties, that is very impressive. Colman doesn't have the downside that a lot of actresses do in that they hit early and have a hard time holding fast, whether it be due to having a family or just by the vicissitudes of an industry that is always looking for the next new thing. But she headlined a massive Netflix juggernaut for two years, got all sorts of nominations, and she's back to the Oscars a scant two years after her win. And her upcoming roster looks promising as hell. Colman's here to stay now that the rest of the world has cottoned onto her, and while she will always have had a strong career as a character actress, now she's got leading clout and I think she's gonna make the most of it. I wouldn't say either of these three will "dominate" the decade, because anything can happen and the field is so wide that any number of actresses, listed or otherwise, will have dominance in certain arenas. But I think these three have strong claims to being major forces in the years to come. I still feel pretty good about all of these.

Yeah I doubt you are dominating the decade by being number seven on the call sheet of Nolan and Villeneuve movies.
The hype has died down for all these up-and-coming actresses from the class of 96. They turn 28 this year, at that age Lawrence and Stone were already Oscar winners and Robbie had a Best Actress nom. Pugh has a supporting nod to show for, Steinfeld one that dates back to her child days, Taylor-Joy, Dever and Zendaya nada.
The 88-91 crop is historically strong (five Oscar winners, three more Best Actress nominees) and just like they stole the thunder from their predecessors born in the early to mid-eighties they seem to prevent those born in the mid-nineties from thriving. Could extend it to 88-94 to include Ronan and it's even more blatant.
So the actresses dominating the decade will likely be the same ones who dominated the 2010s.

As opposed to not being able to get cast in Nolan and Villeneuve movies? I fully grant Pugh has not helmed a lead role by a major auteur on the level of her excellent work in Park Chan Wook's The Little Drummer Girl, but I think it's just a matter of time. No other actress seems as much on the minds of top directors. Even Emma Stone, whose career is in a very healthy place right now, is ultimately alternating between acclaimed Lanthimos projects, and much more forgettable fare.

Florence Pugh is definitely among the top list of actresses most directors wanna work with. The only question is where she's ranked. Her competition is Ronan, Stone, Robbie, Mulligan, and maybe Zendaya? I put Zendaya just because I see those two competing for killer assassin roles but I can't see the other 4 I named being in play for those parts.
I think Pugh just lacks the accolades of the others, but her good parts are just gonna increase from this point on. Her being British and hot helps. British because that gives her the British parts. Hot because I've heard even common men dig her looks in Oppenheimer. I've never heard any dude say Marion Cotillard is some sex goddess in Inception or The Dark Knight Rises, for example.
I think she needs to land something like Promising Young Woman.... that'll really catapult her. But it took Mulligan 11 years from An Education to finally barge back. Midsommer is a credible movie in the industry, just not well known to general audiences. And Don't Worry Darling maybe you can argue is just unfortunate wasn't released to very high reviews, but she trusted the project too much apparently.

Even though I'm not a fan,we should probably add Sydney Sweeney to the list. She is very, very ambitious. Yep. Sweeney is in major play now, especially after the quite surprising/stunning box office success of Anyone But You.She'll be credited with bringing back the Rom-com (It's also a major boost for Glen Powell's hopes of being a major movie star, but that's for another thread). She's got the looks and is a solid enough actress to be offered up the kind of opportunities Jennifer Lawrence was getting in the late 2000's and 2010's. It could all go tits up, but she could potentially be the biggest star of the bunch within a few years. Think she's a more solid and conventional bet for that kind of level of stardom than Anya Taylor-Joy, that's for certain.

Most prestige films minded viewers don't view her in terms of awards and accolades. Even in Euphoria, Zendaya is considered the standout.... for that episode where she got coked up. Sweeney might not have been considered bad, but I think for the most part she's mostly gonna lose juicy roles to her competition. The Stones, and the Robbies. Even Zendaya has Challengers, which has a chance to be nominated for Best Actress. Even if she does manage to win a nice role, it's gonna be difficult to break thru into the mold of Jennifer Lawrence. And maybe it might be more of one-time thing. But....... it's possible. It's just my guess that I don't think she'll ever be much more than the sex icon of the Biden/Trump administration. She might dominate the box office rom coms tho. Those kinda actresses are fading. Rachel McAdams' time is up.
