The Outrun
First instinct, is that this may very well be the best Saoirse has ever been. Why is no one picking this up?? Should be an easy nom for her.

The Stranger (2024 Maika Monroe and Dane DeHaan):
This has to be one of the biggest "how dumb do you think your audience is" movies I've seen in a while. This is coming from someone who has watched not one, but TWO Jack in the Box films... don't judge me...
Anyway, despite being set in present day, the Angelina Jolie movie Hackers has a more realistic way of dealing with technology. This was just bad on all levels and given the on screen talent, it should have been at least decent. It is not. This movie is the equivalent of a chat gpt of bullet points trying to appease an RT score. Absolutely terrible. To think I was super excited when I saw this added to Hulu.

François Ozon's Time to Leave (2005): A quiet, poignant look at one man's life as it slips away. The film rests entirely on the calibrated beauty of Melvil Poupaud's performance as a character who's not entirely likable but wholly authentic - human. This should probably be cross-posted in the Great Performances thread. *Bonus points to Ozon for casting Jeanne Moreau - his reverence for legendary actresses is so appreciated - she is stunning in a pivotal supporting role as Poupaud's grandmother. What You Wish For -
Categorized as horror, but it's not scary in the least... but it is tense and a damn good film. Not streaming anywhere, so I had to rent it. Worth it. Nick Stahl has had two great horror films in this and What Josiah Saw recently (well his segment of What Josiah Saw, which this film is pretty much like, in a way). My only real gripe with it is the film ended with such a great shot, but had this upbeat score going along with it. That doesn't spoil anything, but it made me angry they didn't go with silence. Good shit otherwise.

Three movies for me.
For The Love of the Game (1999) - 5/10. I was on vacation last week. They played this movie on the tour bus. It was okay.
Overlord(2018) - 9/10. Fantastic film. Great blend of horror, zombie, and fantasy history. Really fun ride.
Showing Up (2023) - 7.5/10. My first Kelly Reichardt film. Definitely not for everybody. It is a slow paced film about an artist trying to get everything ready for an art show.

Inside Out 2
Definitely the best non-Toy Story sequel/prequel from PIXAR. Doesn't reach the heights of the first, but still pretty damn good. Had me RIGHT in the feels. Great voice work from everyone involved.

two horror rewatches. Evil Dead remake (2013) and Insidious (2010). Former is as intense, goofy and splattery as ever with stunning practical effects and makeup/prosthetics. Latter is worse than I remembered. I'm trying to give Wan a second chance because his movies were popping off back when I was a closeted horror fan and movies like Insidious and Conjuring with their blaring soundscapes and corny try-hardness were among the reasons I used to say I didn't like the genre. I remember Insidious having some creepy moments (still love that last shot and Rose Byrne's gasp, and Lin Shaye does her absolute best to sell the hell out of that wonky third act), but the whole thing has aged really badly. Never finds its groove or cultivates a creepy atmosphere (partly because they change houses mid-story), most of the scares are either telegraphed or smothered in silly editing gimmicks and overbearing musical cues. I think the word I was looking for all those years ago to describe my dislike for Wan's filmmaking was sincerity. This thing is so unbearably sincere. Every scary moment it's like James Wan himself is breaking the 4th wall to yell at the audience ("THIS IS SCARY! BE SCARED!") and almost none of the scares feel organic. The editing too... yikes. So much sped-up action and Patrick Wilson is straight up kicking ghost ass like he's in a Chuck Norris movie. That might be fine if the movie had self-awareness, but this is James Wan, so it doesn't. Everything is dead serious even when what you're seeing is patently absurd. I'll never be able to kick back and enjoy Insidious.Evil Dead -- totally different story. Alvarez had this remake on point. It's not scary anymore, and I'm not sure it was ever *that* scary because of how over-the-top it is. More gross than scary, but always entertaining because Alvarez throws you right into the action in the first few minutes, shot the thing beautifully, and committed to practical & prosthetics over CGI. Gloriously silly nasty fun, with a killer final girl in Jane Levy. Can always come back to this one. The Bikeriders (2024)-
Got the characters, aesthetic and vibe right. Storytelling's a little wobbly. Still worth a watch- 7/10

Two for me.
Beast (2017) - A slow-burning independent British romance. Jessie Buckley was really good in her breakout role. 7/10 for me. Loved the performances and the cinematography.
Fancy Dance (2024) - 9/10 for me. Gladstone puts in yet another brilliant performance in this independent film about a aunt who tries to find her missing sister and tries to protect her niece. I completely dug the socially conscience themes, the authentic look, and the performances.

I have a few I watched this weekend:
No Hard Feelings (2023): A fun comedy that mixes raunchy with a nice story about friendship. Jennifer Lawrence is excellent, while the rest of the cast is fun. 8/10
Anyone but You (2023): Another fun comedy from last year. It's interesting how a misunderstanding causes two people to despise each other, and neither one is wrong. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are great together, and Sweeney may now be a new celebrity crush of mine. I also didn't realize until the end that this was a loosely modernized version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. I also love the use of Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten." The rest of the cast is also fun. 8/10
Stripes (1981): My late father-in-law had this DVD, and I never got around to watching it until today. Bill Murray and that whole cast are a riot in a story about a couple of guys who decide to join the army. 8.5/10

I completely dug the socially conscience themes, the authentic look, and the performances. Went in knowing nothing about it: having only seen the poster, I was not expecting to be watching a Grand Theft Auto game. I think the crime elements to advance the plot points bordered on lunacy but what worked overall is the stuff you mentioned. Gladstone is really excellent in this.

The "crime elements" make the characters empathic. We understand their plight, but do not necessarily agree with actions. Jax and Roki are without going to prison and will end up getting separated.
