wilcinema I think Italian cinema is really underrated this decade. It really has a very strong output. Apart from the usual acclaimed directors (Fellini, Pasolini, Bertolucci, Visconti) who made some of their best work this decade, there are other really underrated directors who also had a very strong output as well. I'll just name a few: Elio Petri: (Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion, The Working Class Goes To Heaven, One Way Or Another) Ettore Scola: (We Loved Each Other So Much, Ugly Dirty And Bad, A Special Day) Francesco Rosi: (The Mattei Affair, Lucky Luciano, Christ Stopped At Eboli) Even Gillo Pontecorvo gave us what I consider his best work in the 70s (Operacion Ogro) and the Taviani brothers, even though I don't like much of their work during this period, made the great and underseen St. Michael Had A Rooster. So, pretty spectacular decade for Italian cinema!

Then it all went to hell for a number of reasons, but during that time we had an embarassment of riches. I'm not as big on the Tavianis as other people, and even they have a couple of masterpieces.

So to be clear: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Jesus of Nazareth are eligible or no? Both would make my ballot, at a quick glance. TTSS is 5 or 6 single hour episodes, Nazareth is two episodes of... like, 3 hours a piece? As far as I'm concerned, they're miniseries - but that line is very thin, and the reason that Nazareth in particular wasn't theatrically released is probably due to its length. They count. I might even consider Jesus Of Nazareth for my ballot (it's essential viewing every Easter here in Greece and I've watched it so many times that I can't consider it anything less than masterful).

And I also feel like there is somewhat of an impression that I'm against American cinema. I'm not. I just think that American cinema is not only stuff like Rocky and Star Wars (or The Godfather). There are also more underappreciated/underseen films (like Wanda, Blue Collar or Wise Blood, just to name a few) that deserve consideration for this list. Try to be creative with your lists and try to give some appreciation to films that are great/masterful, but in a less flashy/obvious way. That's all I'm saying.

Just watched this, which will probably place in my ballot (although I'll probably have too many Italian movies in my list lol). Crazy good, and Lina Wertmuller's masterpiece.
