Domingo and Turman getting nods, hell yeah. Ma Rainey killed it here, Promising Young Woman hit some key noms, Sound of Metal was surprisingly absent from above the line categories (I guess from here on out we agree that's it's in play for Ahmed and Raci and nothing else?). Minari obviously killed it too. Love that Han Ye-ri nom which may be her last of the season. She's not supporting though. The only real surprise with Nomadland was the Strathairn snub from a group that loves Strathairn.

The Bull nods are good. Saw that a couple weeks ago and liked it pretty well. Morgan is really solid.

It's really wonderful and exactly the kind of film you'd see do well with the ISAs. Seemed like a great screenplay contender at least, but a supporting nod for Gayle Rankin would've been deserved too and not unexpected.

With The Father and everybody mentioning that it's surprising that it is missing, regional critics groups might not have changed to extend the release period like the Academy and a few others have done. From my knowledge there hasn't been a limited release in the states whatsoever before 2020 elapsed. I wouldn't doubt it if we see Hopkins and other elements of the film in 2021 critics prizes and we'll all complain that he's taking up a spot for somebody to gain traction next year.

I doubt that'll happen. Critics' bodies are just going to give The Father a mulligan on this year and just say "well, it was a casualty of COVID" and not look back (unless, that is, 2021's season is dire). Same with Kaluuya. They're not going to burn traction they could give another contender on someone ineligible for Oscar consideration.

yeah, I should've clarified. I don't think he'd steamroll in critics' groups and he certainly wouldn't win any of LAFCA or NYFCC or other major ones, but I was more thinking that he'd pop up like Joaquin did with YWNRH. Then my first post folds on itself because that wouldn't be enough to stall anyone else, so there's that.

I completely agree and hope that it didn’t seem like I was implying Ahmed was now the favorite. Boseman probably still wins, but this along with a few other things like MRBB not being nominated for Picture and Hopkins seeming like he’s peaking at the right time do make me feel like it’s closer than I originally thought when the season started.

As for Best Actress, I know it’s like a running joke in some circles, but I do think this leads credence to the idea Mulligan would have won BAFTA if it had been under the old system because McDormand had never lost at the Spirits before and her film was the big winner of the night, but Mulligan still beat her head to head.

I don’t know if Mulligan will prevail in the end, but she was able to beat Davis and McDormand head to head at an awards show where they generally go with the Oscar favorite when the Oscar favorite is also a Spirit Award nominee.
