Spike Lee finally wins Directing!! Will the televised awards follow NBR?? Considering NBR hasn't gotten a Best Director winner matched with the Oscars since 2006, I'm gonna say no.

So it looks like Spike is Chloe Zhao' s main challenger for Best Director as the race stands. And seeing as how this industry operates very much on a "wait till it's your turn" basis, I'm thinking Spike has a very big chance of winning Best Director.
Same for Da Five Bloods in Best Picture. If the NBR of all places can go for Spike and this movie, then it augers well for it chances.

Are you the one who usually says stats are there to be broken? The Oscars aren't going to not award Lee, because they haven't corralated with NBR since 2006.

Yes, but NBR is merely one organization (and they aren't even a critics' body), and Zhao has won an absurd amount of prizes up to this point, and a loss at this point on that scale would be unprecedented. This is a fine feather in Lee's cap, but this doesn't change much in the way of the race.

Time and time again, we've seen people steamroll with critics groups, then completely falter when the industry and televised element comes more into play. Right now, as I said on another thread, Lee is going through his Hollywood Royalty phase. He is the genuine industry threat to win Best Director that people initially pegged Fincher to be.

I think the real push for Spike is that he will get his second nomination in three years, after decades where he was considered unjustly snubbed. I still need to figure out industry reception for Nomadland, it strikes me as the kind of film that kills it with the critics but may have trouble with the industry.

He's won an Oscar. Nobody considers him unjustly snubbed these days. He's gone from anti-establishment to being if not part of the establishment, at least celebrated by the establishment. His narrative is that he is a iconoclastic, legendary director who has never won for directing, who is up against a newbie who made an indie spirit type film that critics love. Lee seems like such a classic industry alternative to Zhao once the industry starts voting.

Mank is dead. No passion. I told you bitches that months ago. When Netflix doesn't brag about viewing numbers that means nobody watched it. Netflix has been turning up the campaign for Da 5 Bloods the past month or so and Lee and Company have been everywhere promoting it (Deadline Contenders, Roundtables, featurettes, etc.) No offense to TOTC7 but I think Da 5 Bloods should be their #1 priority now.

These are the facts of life. I love The X-Files but I always chuckle at how Scully saw so much strange shit throughout the seasons and then in Season 6 Mulder would posit a theory involving something paranormal and Scully would be like "I have a hard time believing that Mulder with the science" when everything in the previous 5 seasons has upended that..lol. Only thing less believable than that is two attractive single people that work together every day have a platonic relationship for 7 seasons before they get together.

This is amazing for Da 5 Bloods. I loved it and had it pegged as a major contender after its test screening, then I was swayed by the early release and really bad audience scores. It’s made a really nice turnaround. As far as past winners and precedent, Lee makes sense here. His direction is much more showy and larger in scope. He’s a male. I do have a hard time seeing Zhao lose if Nomadland remains the frontrunner for BP. She’s been so dominant with critics that I think it’s either going to take both BP and BD or neither. The Social Network comp only works if you’re predicting Nomadland to lose BP as well.
Good for PYW as well, I think most were expecting it to be snubbed. Minari is having a mini-surge too. It’s looking like Youn may be the first Asian actor that gets the nomination in quite some time.
