Grave of the Fireflies is maybe the most depressing movie I've ever seen and I haven't had the heart to re-watch it since I first saw it about 8 or 9 years ago. But goddamn, is it a beautiful film. Was my #12.

Why does Akira not make the Top 100 but Grave of the Fireflies is this high?
I think Grave is fine (nothing against it at all)... nice wartime tragedy ala Spielberg, but Akira is obviously better.

As a Ghibli lover, I'm that one guy that doesn't actually like Grave of the Fireflies. Not for lack of trying. I think I've watched it three times now, and each time I say "this time will be better than I remember!" and then it just winds up being the same endlessly grey misery and I'm just saying "yeah, I get it, life sure does suck."

Interesting and eclectic list so far, I counted 11 things voted for that made it. Platoon was way low. I was the one who put Star Trek II at no. 2. I was worried it would get on just because of me but fortunately some other people voted for it

#28“Why do fireflies have to die so soon?” Grave Of The Fireflies1988~ Isao Takahata180 points from 11 ballots Highest Placement: #1 on 1 ballot-- cheesecake I understand that it might be too devastating for everyone, even for the toughest members of the board, but seeing Fireflies miss the top 25 stings a lot.

Only just catching up, excellent presentation so far!
As usual with these polls, I'm reminded just how damn little I've seen - the watchlist grows ever larger.

Just came in.
Excited for the two Woody Allen movies, Harry and Sally, while The Terminator and Roger Rabbit couldn't have missed!
I'm also happy Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the two Michael Mann films and Little Shop of Horrors made it in the list, even though I didn't vote for them.
On the other hand, I feel some films deserved to be higher: Ghostbusters, Tootsie, Back To The Future II, AIrplane and The Untouchables.
The Breakfast Club is a bit high imo.

#27 feels right for Wings of Desire - which I love. I'm a simple man. You send Peter Falk strolling around Berlin, trying on hats, drinking coffee.... I'm happy.

Obviously overall they’re very different, but the three great Japanese animated movies of 88 are all linked by their being about varying degrees of isolated youth.

Would've liked to see Totoro higher. It's just a lovely film about childhood and life's simplicities that I'd recommend to absolutely anyone, young or old. I saw a showing of it several years back with a few skeptical friends, and they ended up loving it.
