This is a movie I never understood. I don't have that nostalgic love of the movies that a lot of people do. This is one big love letter to MOVIES and I just sat there the whole time wishing for something uglier and more cynical.

This is kind of my reaction too, and when I say it, people look at me like I'm crazy lol (but you can imagine why, it's one of the most popular films of all time in Italy).

Went from hating it to loving it. It makes me wanna be a teen again. Martin Stett - Good point you make. But why does ANYONE wanna be remembered? You're the cynic, remember?

I'm not a big fan of Cinema Paradiso either, but I have spoken and met lots of Italians in Kefalonia (lots of Italians go there for vacation in the summer and a friend of mine has a hotel there) and most of them mentioned Cinema Paradiso when I asked them to tell me of a great Italian film. The disappointing part is that none of them (apart from an older couple) knew who Federico Fellini or Pier Paolo Pasolini were.

Crimes and Misdemeanors! Pretty much a perfect representation of human darkness. Bloody funny to boot.

Nice that Possession made it, but c'mon, Zulawski's masterpiece and the single greatest science fiction film ever made, On The Silver Globe, missing is a huge crime against cinema.

I like to *imagine* that not all people are bastards. That's something, right? I don't think all people are bastards. I just don't like to exaggerate the importance of myself. I'm nothing in this world. I was born. I'll fuck, shit, then die. Wise words of Geoffrey Rush.

How do you forget that you have a missing eye, Arnold? Wouldn't it be covered up and constantly reminding you that you are blind on one side?

The disappointing part is that none of them (apart from an older couple) knew who Federico Fellini or Pier Paolo Pasolini were. I know exactly what you mean. Italian younger generations barely know Fellini, Visconti, Pasolini, and it is a damn shame.
