I mean the official AMPAS twitter page tweeted a goat emoji when talking about Denzel a couple of years back for TTOM, and they don’t just tweet that for the hell of it when it represents their organization. It’s kind of obvious at this point that Washington is revered within the industry (and the movie going public) as one of the greatest actors who ever lived, if not the GOAT. Which goes back to Scrud’s point on Denzel always being on academy members radar for a nomination when he does a prestige film/role, which it sounds like he signed up for with the Gladiator sequel according to the trades.

After The Last Duel, which I thought was brilliant (and deserved Best Picture recognition. Shame it tanked box office wise), I'm back on board the train that Ridley Scott is once again the guy to do justice to historical epics. The trailers for Napoleon ( which look terrific) are not dampening my enthusiasm for that take. Scott is hit and miss, but when he hits, he's still one of the best directors on the planet. So I'm a lot more enthused about it's potential than when his last historical epic was Exodus: Gods And Kings. Then I'd be concerned. I'm not concerned about Scott's history with returning to original properties. It's about the genre for me, and he looks to be firing on all cylinders in the genre once again. Whatever the outcome, it's a "prestige" project (which means inevitable awards season predictions) with Denzel doing some olde world, cod-Shakespearean acting in a toga or whatever. That's catnip to Oscar voters, who are always on full alert when Denzel does "prestige". The movie might not even be good (hopefully it'll be great), but there's a more than solid chance he'll be up for another Oscar nod regardless. Hence... meltdown.I will add that I feel like Prometheus gets a bad rap, and the issues I have with it aren't really chalked up to Ridley Scott's direction. The man still understands scope and wonder in ways very few others do, but the script has to be at least somewhat ironclad. Prometheus had a fantastic concept but they tried too hard to shoehorn Alien connections in it, and the characters' motivations and actions were pretty clumsy, and obviously the idea of having Guy Pearce play an ancient character like that is pretty funny considering Max von Sydow was courted as the original choice. But even still, I found it an entertaining experience with some provoking ideas. That said, I am decidedly less kind on Alien: Covenant, which I felt squandered so much potential for continuing the David story in favour of emphasizing the Alien again. And I do criticize Scott for that, because Prometheus is inherently the story of a manmade creation (an android) gaining sentience and realizing his creator is flawed and fallible, and he decides to become a god and creator himself. Hence we created God, in our own image. We didn't need the Xenomorph in that story. The "Engineers" should have been the only connection to that franchise. I think Scott knew that when he made Prometheus but largely abandoned it in Covenant, which really is a shame. I feel like Gladiator 2 could really go either way. I have no doubt that it will be a sumptuous visual feast, because again, Scott knows spectacle. And he's got a great cadre of actors to show up. But remember that the first film's script wasn't even finished when they began filming, and they managed to salvage it into a Best Picture winner. That's a miracle in itself. I would hope that they learned from the first one and have a watertight screenplay at the ready. As for Washington's involvement, the very fact that he's in a movie like this and in what is likely a featured supporting role (comparable to Oliver Reed or Richard Harris in the first one?) for the first time in three decades is enough to draw potential awards attention. It kind of makes me think of when Olivier did Marathon Man and got nominated in Supporting Actor after decades of being a firm leading man. It didn't diminish his starpower, but at that stage in his career the leading roles were starting to dry up. I don't really think the comparison to Olivier and Washington really works. Olivier had long altermated being a character/supporting actor and a leading man as far back as the late 1950's, where he played prestige support to Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster in The Devil's Disciple. Then later again to Douglas in Spartacus. By the 70's he wasn't really a major draw in films as a leading man, though he still played leads roles like Sleuth.
Washington is still one of the biggest stars and leading men on earth. I think he'd be up for potential awards recognition from the academy whether he was playing Paul Mescal's lead role or a featured support, simply because he just carried that level of "juice" with AMPAS when it comes to prestige projects.
I also wonder if Washington's role isn't essentially a lead one. They've kept details of the role under wraps, maybe so we don't guess quite how big it is. But I wonder if it'll be similar to Leonardo DiCaprio ( the main protagonist) and Daniel Day-Lewis (the antagonist, who could have been classified as supporting, but his performance was too dominating) in Gangs Of New York. I don't know if Denzel would sign up for a role without size and heft, so it may almost work out to be a co-lead situation. We'll definitely find out.

The difference is these are all ^ selected by a very limited pool (1 or 2 people maybe) as opposed to an aggregate of the big ones where he misses entirely: AFI, TSPDT (1 film @808 in 2022), Sight and Sound, IMDB fans, Letterboxd fans.......like I said he's the only great actor who misses all these....he didn't have a BP nominee as a star until he was 63.......that doesn't mean he will never be on AFI or Sight and Sound but people talk about his weak filmography for a great actor a lot in the real world.......that is "why" it keeps coming up........it's discussed in the real world - we've had examples recently discussing it from the real world...........much like it is with Jessica Lange too - a great actress also but with almost no BP nominees....... It depends what you value in an actor - you either think you don't care about the film or you think if the actor was THAT great then he'd make his films great too like all the other great actors.......it's depends what matters to you..... You are a hater of Washington.I'm a hater - but have I've seen him on Broadway multiple times, Armond White is a hater because he criticized him, Cinema Archives are haters because they ranked him @43 because they said his films are weak............ you just aren't allowed to say anythind bad about him - but all actors have flaws Also you're dumb - you know I have like thousands of your old posts on hundreds of websites..... .........yet you continue to pick fights.......... stop.........I have a right to post.......I'll post when I want.....if I want.......You can't see the real world........you couldn't see it on IMDB (below) and you can't see it on MAR......you're just a fanboy......... just let people speak

You are still rehashing tired tactics from 3 to 4 years ago that you and Good God rinsed to to death ( Even he seems to know when he's lost, cause he's left you on your own) that just made the entire board sick and tired. Endless collections of screenshots from years past of things I written. It's Deja Vu.... we've already done this shit and it's played out Nobody gives a shit which message boards I frequented in 2008. Nobody gives a shit what I wrote on IMDB in 2016 or Goldderby in 2012. It's just irritating to the board and makes you look like a desperate stalker with way too much time on your hands. Grow up. Find a new hobby. Get a chick. Something dude. Anything

I talked about this in the thread for the movie, but Septimus Severus (the black Roman emperor) died around 20 years after the historical Commodus. The names of his two sons are also included as characters on the cast list. That seems like too many coincidences for it not to be Denzel's part. I'd guess that means it's probably like Richard Harris in the first movie where he dies at the end of the first act to set the plot in motion and gets an "and" credit.

Septimus Severus sounded like an extremely plausible theory to me for Denzel's casting when it first came up. The only reason I kinda doubt it is because of the casting of his 2 sons ( Joseph Quinn as Caracella and Fred Hechinger as Geta). Those two actors are as Caucasian as it's possible to be. If Ridley Scott were casting Denzel ( a black man) as Septimus Servus, surely he'd at least cast mixed race actors as Caracella and Geta? The audience will just spend too much time wondering how they could be Denzel's biological sons otherwise. So, that's why whomever he's playing, I'm not 100% convinced it's Septimus.

Yeah, this is the only thing that gives me pause that Septimius Severus is who Washington is playing. I do think Scott would be open to colorblind casting (which would be a nice change of pace, considering where he was in the days when he complained that "Muhammad So-and-So couldn't open a movie like Exodus: Gods and Kings"), but genetically it might be a bridge too far unless they tinkered with the history (i.e. maybe Caracella/Geta are his adopted sons instead of biological). I feel like it makes more sense if Washington is playing a mentor type like Proximo, who has more screentime throughout than Richard Harris did, but I'm not ruling out Severus either.

Not sure why this keeps coming up. In the last 3 years: New York Times: Greatest Actor Of The 21st CenturyEmpire Magazine: Carries the label of " America's Greatest Living Actor".Tom Hanks: " He's our Brando. Nicholson. Olivier".Jared Leto: " Denzel Washington to me is my Brando, Pacino, DeNiro rolled up into one"Jonathan Majors: Denzel is the GOATMichael B Jordan: Denzel Washington is the GOAT. Fight me.Austin Butler: Denzel is the Godfather of acting.Jamie Foxx: We always talk about who the Greatest Actor Of all time is and I believe it is Denzel Washington And this is just off the top of my head. Denzel has been building such a strong consensus in recent years to being the so-called " GOAT" among his peers, media and in the public, that I suppose you need something to try and counter that ascension if you aren't of that opinion. But I predicted this was going to happen well over 16 years ago on IMDB (and many thought I was nuts to think it possible), so I'm just enjoying the ride for what it is I guess my whole thing is okay so Denzel's movies are not on par with Pacino. My response is AND!!!! It's like who cares. He still be remembered m there are plenty of actors in classics that nobody talks about anymore.

"I guess my whole thing is okay so Denzel's movies are not on par with Pacino"
Well no one said that - no one mentioned Pacino - but yes they are not on par - his movies look a lot more like a far lesser actor - he isn't Pacino - but for filmography he isn't even Pitt ......some people care about it, some don't - no big deal......
To me it's a huge deal though: I always say this:
"The greatest actors, are in the greatest scenes, opposite the greatest co-stars, usually for the greatest directors in the greatest films ever made"
That describes a lot of actors, I just don't think it describes him too much ........

He's a threat in the hierarchy of actors (if not the main threat) , so if you don't want him to be seen as greater than________ (insert other revered actor), you'll say whatever you need to as loudly as you can. If audiences/his peers/media have decided he's the GOAT or whatever, all the crying in the world about if his filmography stacks up to this actor or that actor won't change anything.

Yet another Denzel movie starting to gain more appreciation, 20 years after it's release. Interesting write-up by Paste Magazine written by Michelle Beaupre, the senior editor of Letterboxd, about the Carl Franklin directed Out Of Time, arguing that it's a great, underappreciated slice of neo-noir.

Boy those 6/10 grade Denzel movies get a lot of critical reevaluations and writeups! Quite the phenomena. His filmography really does keep gaining in appreciation from critics and audiences. I saw a Twitter Poll (with 23,000 voters, so it was a lot) asking if they had to choose between Denzel, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr and their filmographies and whom they would vote to get rid of all their movies....Denzel got the least votes , Leo the second least votes (fractional difference between them though), Hanks the 3rd least votes and Downey Jr the most votes. At least in that poll, people would rather lose the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Hanks & Leo's filmographies before Denzel's. You might get different results in another poll, but for a vote with over 23K people, that's an impressive vote of confidence in Denzel's filmography from people in the real world.

Yowza 😍 Franklin seems content to be a TV director now. Probably more job security. Also, he's getting up there in age and probably can't deal with the politics it takes to stay a "hot" feature film director. Still, I agree it's a shame that he didn't get more support as a feature film director. Devil In A Blue Dress and One False Move in particular would be strong additions to most directors filmographies. Nice to see his body of film work get more respect these days.

Whoa...........whoa.........somebody said something less than fellating him in his own thread? On the plus side no one will call you a hater, a racist or get mad at you for reviewing Equalizer 3 "too soon" and what not I admire your bravery good sir!
Speaking of Al, shouldn't you be on his thread covering the news today of him being fleeced by his 29 year old "girlfriend", who took the old man's sperm, kicked him to the curb and now just wants his money and child support payments before he kicks the bucket. Sounds like you are jealous that he was / is occasionally still sleeping with a 29 year old and is rich enough to do that - while you are dating Sally Palm and begging Mom to increase your allowance by a nickel. She maybe just likes the money and that he has 5 Triple Crown acting wins and won all 3 awards and a BAFTA - no male ever did that - not Kirk Douglas, not Denzel Washington, not Matt Damon so STFU until they do ....... What a gross comment to make about an 83 year old man ^ .......no wonder the mods hate you so much ........you can't win an argument.......so go right for the man's sperm...... Well, that attack was unexpected. Don't think anybody was interested in revisiting the remenants of a dead, nearly 2 month old beef on this thread, where you got mocked and laughed off the thread by one of the moderators you claim hate me so much (all that authority based ass-kissing for nothing ). I don't know or particularly care how they feel about me in 2023, though we certainly had run-ins many years ago. Unlike you, I'm not desperate for anyone's approval. But from my perspective I get on fine with most of the mods these days. I even quite enjoy the debates & exchange of ideas I have with mikedeastavrone96. But I don't need to suck their dicks, and they don't need to suck mine Still, it's interesting to see the severe psychological hold I have over you. This was such a weirdly unprompted and pointless comeback to a long dead storyline, that I have to imagine you spend almost every single waking hour thinking of me, and thinking of a way to get my attention or say "gotcha". I literally live rent free in your head. You're giving "Please, please pupdurcs , notice me. I can't go 24 hours without talking to you, about you, tagging you, or making some direct or indirect reference to you or something you said on the board". It's literal obsession at this point Anyway, that's my closing statement on this bizarre chapter of you begging for my attention on the daily. Like I said, you might want to invest in a good therapist. This fixation on me probably isn't good for your mental health. I mean that sincerely. Anyway, hopefully this stupid interlude goes away. Back to the actual thread subject.
