I dont care about popularity, nobody really cares about most of my stuff either. It's just interesting im so fond of someone this popular. I dont usually listen to someone this popular on a consistent basis so I feel like that kind of deviates from my norm. But yeah ...shes definitely #1 in so many ways. I dont even think what shes doing is such original stuff. There have been genre criss crossers before. But its just telling that every single album of her has value. I dont think you can say that about madonna, ABBA or preceding acts who have like 5 or 6 hits (in my opinion) and just kinda fades away after that. But you have an encyclipedia of Taylor swift songs that can be played. DareIsay her opposite gender counterpart is David Bowie in that same encyclopedia of pop songs. I dont see anyone else as a more fitting comparison, or is there even anyone else.

4 albums in the top 10 this week btw - only the 2nd artist - ever - to do it while living - Herb Alpert is the other - Prince did 5 when he turned himself from a symbol into an obituary......wasn't sure where to put this.....too many Swift threads tbh......yet none for Kathleen Hanna...... "She is the first living act to have four albums in the top 10 at the same time since the April 2, 1966-dated chart, when Herb Alpert also had four albums in the top 10," Billboard says, referring to the American trumpeter.
Prince is the only other artist to achieve this distinction, though he did so posthumously.
Five of his albums landed back in the Top 10 - in mid-May 2016, three weeks after his death.www.npr.org/2023/07/17/1188091063/taylor-swift-billboard-top-10-first-woman

Finally gave Folklore a shot today and I can't believe that this is what everyone was making a big deal about. 80% of this just sounds like fucking Coldplay and the rest maybe rises up to the level of mediocre Arcade Fire (which admittedly has been the entirety of their last couple albums). I was somewhat curious about this because Taylor at least likes a lot of good music (St. Vincent, Arcade Fire, Beck; she's a big Pet Sounds fan and covered God Only Knows live too) so I was hoping she'd maybe incorporate some of those influences into her music finally, but no, this is just boring soft rock that feels like it was made specifically to be played in the waiting room at the doctor's office. Not in the least surprised that The National guy produced and co-wrote a bunch of the songs, The National are fake alternative wallpaper music too. In hindsight that Pitchfork review was ridiculous because I can't believe anyone giving this anything more than like a 4 unless you're just a Swift stan.
I'm not really a Swift hater, indifferent to her as a person and although that kind of music isn't my kind of thing Red and 1989 were as good as top 40 pop from that era got. But this is just not it, she needs to stay in her lane which it sounds like she did in the new one. All the people wetting themselves over this need to listen to the actually good indie music this was compared to that is 1000x better, but of course they won't because if it doesn't hit the top 40 it doesn't really happen.

While I appreciate that everyone won't like it, this is just sort of factually incorrect. She's more popular than ever (quite a bit so as well) exactly because she really drew in a new audience with these albums. If anything it shows the exact opposite - that she really is good enough to branch out from what she usually does and will be able to reach a new audience doing so.
The idea that one needs to listen to some 'actually good indie' is ridiculous. It's absolutely not mutually exclusive to like Folklore (and Evermore) and also like a lot of other indie music. I know I do.

Wtf. Folklore sounds nothing like Coldplay or Arcade Fire.
And lots of people who like Folklore have listened to plenty of other indie albums (these aren't dweebs you're talking about) and yet they still prefer to pay $1000 to see Taylor a bunch of times than pay $20 to see a lesser profiled indie act.

For anyone doubting that Taylor Swift is by far the biggest music act right now, her concert movie The Eras Tour had its release of tickets yesterday - it had the biggest ever first day of presales at the AMC chain, selling $26m worth of tickets (besting No Way Home's record of $16.9m). Absolutely mental demand, but then it apparently was 20 million people that signed up for getting tickets for the tour, so.

Ngl, I'm glad it's not Lana Del Rey because I reviewed her 2023 album and you MAR weirdos didn't even comment - wtf, that was a great review tbh - support the Music thread ffs Who can be a Burton to THIS Taylor? It's her world, we're just listening to it.......not sure about the pic - looks like a stoned, red lipped zombie but what do I know - I'm listening to CMAT & PJ Harvey for females in 2023 so I'm not exactly hep to pop culture jive ...... side note: She won Ye.....she totally won so fncking big it's funny - it's Djokovic over Nadal so big it's funny........ what's that jacket Margiela?.........

TECHNICALLY this is her second win, so TECHNICALLY she only needs one more to tie the record of Emperor Wheels. That'll probably be pretty tough to get now, but she can totally run for President and then she'll be near enough guaranteed to get it (only the less famous Hoover and the less famous Ford have failed since they started doing this). Go for it, Swifty.

She never goes out of style...she never goes out of style......suck on this Kanye - btw is the Swift-Kanye thing the greatest beatdown ever in Pop Culture history? Imagine being on Kanye's side then and look at their trajectories since I don't give a fuck about awards and especially not Grammy's - I'm listening to THe Umbrellas new album for Godsakes and no one else in the world is, not even the band (um) - but come on get up ffs - she's only 34 NEWS Taylor Swift Sets New Record With Album of the Year Victory for Midnights at 2024 Grammys It’s her fourth time winning the award, and her 14th win total By Nina Corcoran and Hattie Lindert February 4, 2024Taylor Swift has won the 2024 Grammy for Album of the Year for Midnights. It’s her 14th Grammy, and her fourth time triumphing in the category. She previously won Album of the Year in 2021 (for Folklore), 2016 (for 1989), and 2010 (for Fearless). Swift is now the winningest primary artist in the category’s history, breaking a tie she’d previously held with three-time winners Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder.

Her problem is her rank immaturity. I'm talking a 12-18 year old brain in a mid-30s body. There's something grotesquely incongruous about her.

What’s with the new upcoming album and its setlist? Is she taking the piss? This will be her blockbuster big sister album Like when the younger sister finds the older sister's diary and sees she went through those exact same things............and they grew from them............they're both a little wiser.........a little less innocent................but they are survivors dammit, ok? Artistically this is like that Marvin Gaye record where he was getting divorced and wrote a double album of "Choke on the alimony, Anna" that nobody really got until way later when his dad shot him just after he got Sexual Healing .from tying chicks up and stuff ......Taylor's just doing the divorce album BEFORE her divorce......and um.......also before her marriage............. commercially this will be a license to print money......... .sexually it will make me feel inadequate "Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" (wtf) .while encouaging female masturbation (I Can Do It With A Broken Heart)........ geographicaly this covers (So Long) London to Florida!!! which gets 3 exclamation points for getting the spelling right I guess.........which pretty much covers YOU in 2023 Joaq Side A Fortnight (feat. Post Malone) The Tortured Poets Department My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys Down Bad Side B So Long, London But Daddy I Love Him Fresh Out the Slammer Florida!!! (Florence + the Machine) Side C Guilty as Sin? Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) loml Side D I Can Do It With a Broken Heart The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived The Alchemy Clara Bow Bonus Track: The Manuscript

I don't really "get" this album of the year win. I'm not a fan but her first three album of the year wins seemed to represent something each time- the peak of country pop when she was the no. 1 teen idol, her formerly crossing over into an adult pop star with 1989, and then taking on an indie rock aesthetic and recording Folklore during the pandemic. This one felt like "another Taylor Swift album" it's not supposed to be an award for best tour. When Pac posted those song titles I thought it was him joking

I've seen the question talked about and I've been thinking over the last week particularly, with her domineering presence at the Grammys for winning album of the year again and hijacking the show to announce a new album, the controversy over the emissions of her private jets, the way she's getting discussed as a political pawn because people know how influential she is (Trump was practically begging for her endorsement on Truth Social), fucking everything to do with the NFL/Super Bowl and Travis Kelce - and, mind you, all of that just in the space of a week - but, at this point in her career, is it fair to say she is now the biggest pop cultural figure in music since the peak of MJ or Madonna?

I think this is a legit question. I would say yes. But here's what Im thinking you can make an argument for: Peak-era Britney, Eminem, Prince, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston. Britney from '99-'03, but by 2003.... I think Britney has lost some of her original '99 fans. Some of it has to do with the fact 2003 was truly an awful era of music. Some of it was the R&B, Emo, Mall-Pop punk, and Evanescence overtake. Some of it is because Britney's fanbase is largely 8-14 years old, so by '03 they were already growing up. Eminem after '02 was panned by the critics but from '99-'02 he was undeniable. Imo, Prince was always more major than Michael Jackson in my eyes. From '84-85 Prince was far more significant than MJ, but starting from Sign O' the Times.... he was more of a critic's favorite than someone to compete with MJ on the charts. Not that he didn't dent the charts because he most certainly did, but MJ I think slayed even harder. I think you can also put Backstreet Boys into the conversation.... I can argue they were more famous than any of these during their peak, but besides I Want it That Way nowadays.... I rarely hear anyone play any other of their songs, and they faded away quick. I think the main thing going for Taylor Swift is she crosses into the sphere of indie rock and popular music - so that's 2 prongs of audience going for her. if you have Phoebe Bridgers as your top listened to artist, it's very rare to find one of those people who don't also listen to Taylor Swift. Same goes for Lana Del Rey and Charli XCX.... someone listening to those most certainly listens to Taylor Swift as well. It's definitely not easy to compete with Taylor Swift's longevity, tho.

* I would say merely by the period(s) she exists in - she is a far bigger figure than them and so is Beyonce actually........MJ and Madonna were both Pre-internet era so they belonged to the period where artists spaced out a following.....they had many rivals for your heart and in chart performance too - Prince, U2, Born in the USA, etc.............Swift and Beyonce exist in this era of mega-branding, cross-promotion, capitalization of artistic formats / outlets - here even artists who sell (Drake etc) don't get their level of reach - and that's crucially because of this idea or perception that both are exceptionally "smart" in a way outside of Music* No one would have listened to MJ or Madonna's political POV in the 80s - Madonna wrote one of the greatest anti-abortion songs ever and while that's a great song - it was merely a great song and nothing more.......her "smarts" didn't transcend Pop Music acumen......they almost never do for artists * I said this before on MAR - only urbanpatrician got it - because that dude understands the "Pop" IN Snap, Crackle, Pop! - Hollywood's inability to put this relatively "normal", basic, sweet - All-American girl in the movies is one of its worst mistakes of all-time - particularly in an update of Grease - she IS Sandy - good girl / playing bad and you love her either way..............at 18 she could have been Nancy Drew in about 7 movies ffs ...... * Politically that ^ quality - that very appearqance of "normalcy" lends itself to the Right AND Left.......the first Taylor Swift song I ever heard has a line she doesn't sing anymore (?) - "So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy. That's fine, I'll tell mine you're gay"..........she is apolitical by her very common sense ......though of course she will not stay apolitical and of course she has and she will go Left .........................because Taylor Swift doesn't have to sweat paying 9 dollars for a jar of fucking mayonnaise and what not ........

Ok - look I am not going to review this because I've only reviewed 1 Swift record iirc on MAR - and I like it that way - but this is The White Album of Pop Broken Hearted Love Songs......this will be hard to beat for many as album of the year.......and even old heads like me will like an album where Taylor Swift says "You aren't Dylan Thomas and I'm not Patti Smith and this ain't the Chelsea Hotel" - how PUNK ROCK is that?
A Major Pop record....a magnum opus actually, likely to be reviewed and then re-reviewed and they could teach a whole course on this thing...........go figure
