And to think I didn’t think it possible to like her any less.....

The hype around both Zendaya and John David Washington seems very real, going by the latest batch of reactions (from both critics and other actors & industry colleagues). Feels like they are coming for nods as a pair, Marriage Story style. I 'm starting to think JDW will probably knock someone out of the final 5 in Best Actor.

^ My only reservation about predicting JDW is that pundits still seem so low on his chances for whatever reason. He’s being predicted by only two. Zendaya is being predicted by more than twice that amount to actually win. His reviews definitely seem good enough, so I’m wondering what the hesitation is on him. I don’t even think there’s much difference in the amount of contenders for Best Actor and Actress at this point. Historically, women tend to fare better than men with awards in these sort of relationship dramas. That’s really the only thing I can think of.

Historically, women tend to fare better than men with awards in these sort of relationship dramas. That’s really the only thing I can think of. There is little question to me that as far as critics and pundits are concerned, JDW's category is far stronger. The hesitancy with predicting him as much as Zendaya is almost certainly based on that. If you look at the Indiewire Critics Poll of Best Perfromances of 2020, it had 4 Best Actor Contenders in the top 10 ( Ahmed, Boseman, Lindo, Oldman). It didn't even have Hopkins, a presumed frontrunner who was maybe underseen at the point the poll was taken. By contrast, only Frances McDormand of the serious contenders in her category, made it into the top 10. Sure you have Viola Davis as a likely industry frontrunner, but outside of Frances and Viola, critics and pundits see it as an easier category to break into. Even before anybody saw a single frame of Malcolm & Marie, the narrative was already forming that it would probably just be a play for Zendaya, as Best Actor felt too stacked to break into. Doesn't seem like a big mystery as to why they are higher on Zendaya' s chances. But as you said, JDW's reviews are good enough. I understand the concern that his category is stacked with performances critics and pundits see as the absolute best of the year (regardless of gender), but I think JDW has the vehicle, the narrative and reviews to break into that category and displace someone. This really seems like something the Actors Branch in particular would really go for.

Starts off with 51 on Metacritic with 9 reviews but 83% on RT with 18 reviews.

Starts off with 51 on Metacritic with 9 reviews but 83% on RT with 18 reviews. That's a very strange split. I've read some talk that some of the "top critics" (who would be counted on Metacritic) may have their knives out for this film as the character of Malcolm explicitly goes on a rant against film critics in the movie. But yeah, that is odd, because the RT score looks good.

Yeah, this is a Zendaya play at best in terms of awards, and even then she's fighting for the 5th spot. JDW, Screenplay, and anything below the line is not happening.

Well, we can definitely say this film probably wouldn't have won many critics awards had it been seen in time for them But the split between "top critics" and ""more regular critics" makes me reluctant to write this off totally as a contender beyond Zendaya. I'd be more confident if there wasn't such an obvious split, but the fact that top critics are gunning for this and their less precious brethren aren't (yet) makes me think their is something to the belief that the bigger critics took more offense to the film's attack on one of their own (who apparently is a real life LA Times film critic). So this may still play really well with industry voters, who don't have that baggage.

From what I've read from someone on AW..its for LA Times film critic Katie Walsh's review of Levinson's film Assassination Nation. www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-assassination-nation-review-20180920-story.html

This is down to 74% on Rottentomates. Will probably settle in the 60’s and I think Zendaya is probably getting snubbed. Aside from her Emmy win (which was huge) I’m not sure that the voter demo would be all that familiar with her. She’s on her way, but not a huge star atm, has never headlined a film, and an Oscar newbie getting in with reviews like this is unheard of. I’m reading through reviews now and I don’t think even think her ink is nearly as enthusiastic as it was in early screenings.
Will wait to see what Billie Holiday reviews look like, but if they’re respectable (60’s MC) I feel like Andra Day would make more sense.

This always sounded like a disaster. Sam Levinson is not talented.

Levinson had the guts to bill himself as "Visionary director".

Levinson had the guts to bill himself as "Visionary director". He may be a bit of an ass, but I doubt that was his choice.
