"From Visionary Director.........Sam Levinson" I don't even have to be in sarcastic pacinoyes mode, this stuff writes itself.....

This looks bad. Does anyone else feel this role was more suited towards Beyoncé though? It’s very reminiscent of her turn in Obsessed.
It’s not on YouTube I don’t think, but if you can find the on the run trailer on Vimeo or something, I really think that demonstrates why I think she would be so good in this role.

Zendaya looks good (and trailer's don't neccesarily paint the broader picture), but this trailer makes it feel like a bigger acting acting showcase for John David Washington, who looks like he is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and looks really loose and improvisational here. His progression as an actor is really fucking impressive.

Trailer looks interesting for a COVID chamber piece movie. The cinematography looks great. Zendaya looks like she's going to be the new "IT" actress and JDW's career has skyrocketed since Blackkklansman. Can't wait to see the reviews for this.

A few thoughts:
1. This feels so self-consciously directed, like a student filmmaker's idea of what "cinéma" is after a week in a course on the French New Wave. It may work well in context, but I can't lie and say this trailer did not feel like someone's demo reel. Not even a visually impressive one either.
2. Washington's performance looks terrific and he is what's selling the movie for me. Zendaya looks okay, doesn't have much to do in the actual snippets we see and the voiceover (I'm presuming it's voiceover) is flat so that's negatively coloring my reception.
3. They should require at least 3 big credits before terms like "visionary" get thrown around.
4. lol did they really steal the tagline for (500) Days of Summer?
5. Can't wait for every fancam and stan Twitter to treat this like relationship goals despite everything so far looking like just another dysfunctional, probably codependent relationship. Is there any other relationship dynamic these days?

I'll admit that the whole "from visionary director Sam Levinson" gave me a chuckle, especially knowing who is his father is, but the movie itself looks like a good moody piece with some great acting turns from JDW and Zendaya.

"From the visionary director.. in his directorial debut". That's the next step..just call yourself visionary right out of the gate.

Soon will be getting "From visionary director comes their heralded masterpiece", from filmmakers who’ve only made one movie or something. It's so ridiculously silly.

Oofa that dialogue. B&W viz look pretty good. Random but I once saw the cinematographer Marcell Rév sadly eating alone during a dinner break on Paterno.

Film is mostly getting praises/raved by the early Twitter pundits. Some prefer Zendaya, some prefer John David Washington, but general consensus is both are great and serious contenders in their respective lead acting races. Scott Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter compares it to Who's Afraid Of Virgina Woolf and says Zendaya and JDW are every bit as good as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in that film. Says it can contend in Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Original Screenplay. And maybe cinematography and production design. Zendaya seems more certain than JDW to get nominated because her category is less stacked (Kirby, Day and Mulligan among others need to start worrying about their nomination chances now)

I’m still a bit skeptical of the film as a whole. Rumor has it that Netflix turned down most critics and hand picked their audience for the first wave of reactions. If that’s true, I’d assume it’s because they’re nervous about how the film plays to critics. Also, Ellwood is one of the only actual critics who saw the film and seemed much cooler on it than most of the other reactions
I wouldn’t expect a disaster, but something tells me critics will be somewhat mixed on this. Still, Zendaya will probably be nominated or come very close because she’ll have good ink and is already campaigning aggressively to SAG.
Will be interesting to see who misses between Kirby, Andra Day and Zendaya.. I assume Mulligan is probably safe at this point, though not a lock.

According to Feinberg, JDW and Zendaya are as good as Burton and Taylor???
Come on! This is just nonsense hyping.

This really isn't meant as a personal drag...but Zendaya always looks like a gawky teenage girl playing dress-up. JDW looks solid. The dialogue is excruciating.

Far more reasonable seeming review from World of Reel which is often the saint of reason (not always) and often a real world tonic to social media bullshittery and yeah .........no Burton.....no Taylor.....Slight recommendation. The intentions are in the right place — this is an ambitious statement from Levinson — but the endless rants and stringent monologues that invade this film feel forced and too on-the-nose. Washington doesn’t fully inhabit his role of artist ruminating in his own art, neither does Zendaya as the filmmaker’s muse/lover. These are technically well-accomplished performances, but lacking the kind of soul needed to humanize what we’re seeing onscreen. www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/1/malcolm-and-marie
