After watching End of Evangelion the other day, I'm utterly blown away by it from an emotional, aesthetic, and thoughtful standpoint, and believe I have a new favorite film. So I thought I'd ask you guys which ones have been your #1 at some point or another? For me -
Prior to 11: no real #1, Bleach's Soul Society arc would've been my favorite visual medium thing at the time Age 11-15: The Seventh Seal Age 16: Magnolia Age 17-a few days ago: Love Exposure Now: End of Evangelion

Good question. First real favorite I can remember having is The Dark Knight around age 10 then for a few years after. At 13 my favorite was probably Fight Club or something. Then Fargo for a bit. Then There Will Be Blood was my favorite from like 14/15 to about 18. Now I say Mulholland Drive as my go-to but really I don’t have one “favorite.”

Toy Story from childhood, switched to The Hunt For Red October around 10ish, A Few Good Men a couple years later in Middle school, and then my current no. 1 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was around 16. It might have briefly been A Man For All Seasons just before 2001 too. Age 11-15: The Seventh Seal The Seventh Seal was your favorite movie when you were 11?

Before 10: the Star Wars trilogy 10-13: Gattaca 13 onward: Magnolia
Mulholland Dr. and now Portrait of a Lady on Fire have come the closest to dethroning Magnolia, but I kinda doubt anything will replace that as my go-to answer simply due to how important a film it was for me during my teen years.

I really don't remember which was my favourite film when I was younger. I watched some films, but I never really paid much attention to them. It probably was something like Weekend At Bernie's . It was in high school when I really got into cinema and 8 1/2 was the very favourite film of mine for a couple of years. And since 2009 it has been Salo, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom.

Watched it because I thought the cover looked cool when browsing movies on a summer day, watched it and it impacted me extremely strongly. Have been very passionate about film ever since.

I really didn't have one - I was never a "list" person (still hate doing them tbh) - I think around my late teens Aguirre, Wrath of God was probably it though the most - it's a crucial gateway movie for me and most people around me didn't know it so it was "my" thing - The Decalogue maybe too - saw it at a film festival in my early 20s and was knocked out by it......but: Chinatown (#1) and The Conversation (#2) always win out and have a huge advantage because they sort of play off each other - same release year, similar central character, similar narrative arc (man misunderstands central mystery with dire consequences), iconic acting lead and director, complex screenplays. They maybe have fought it out the most.... If I ever mention either of them separately I usually feel a little guilty

I can definitely say that from being a kid to about 13 years old my favorite film was Jurassic Park but then I started really getting deeper and deeper into movies and I remember kinda forgetting about the notion of one favorite film for a while because I was just experiencing so much new stuff.
Then I remember at one time it was Schindler's List, at another it was Raging Bull for a little while.
Then I definitely settled on 2001: A Space Odyssey for the longest time - this was definitely the most measured and thought-out choice for me at that point. And then after several years it got dethroned by Persona.
Then more years passed and I deliberately stopped thinking about the answer to this question, thoughts were slowly but surely brewing in my head and I think that for now everything is in its right place. My #1 favorite film now is 8½ and I feel very strongly confident about it.

It has been Mulholland Drive since 2012 when I got into watching different kinds of movies other than the indian ones and started following all these Oscar races. I saw The Impossible and fell in love with Watts' performances and wanted to see all her movies. I didn't know the movie of hers I delayed the most would be the best movie watching experience I'll have. Before that it was probably Maqbool and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Interesting question. Some of my favorite earlier films are harder to remember, just because like any kid, I tended to love anything that had pretty colors, and was heavily hyperactive.
Age 4: Toy Story Age 6: Jingle All The Way Age 8: Forrest Gump Age 15: The Dark Knight Age 17: Toy Story 3 Age 22: The Godfather

When I was a little kid probably The Lion King.
And ever since I can remember it's been Goodfellas after that.
Edit: Oh and I think Point Break might have been my fav for a while too before I ever got into film.

Pre-11: Honestly not sure, Harry Potter/Jurassic Park/Jaws possibly 11: The Hunger Games 12-15: Pulp Fiction 16-19 (present): Mulholland Drive - we'll see if I ever see something I love more than this. Part of me doesn't want, wants to keep this the pinnacle of filmmaking forever. Another part of me doesn't like the idea of never seeing something just as great if not greater.

Don’t have specific breakdowns but The Princess Bride, Memento, and Raging Bull have all held that title. Probably some cheesy action flicks when I was younger.

Traffic several years ago and then Vivre sa Vie for a bit (both are still in my top 20). Can't remember anything else being #1. I mean, I guess when I was young and didn't make lists my favorite was probably any of the LOTR movies. Those were good times.

The Godfather Part II has been my #1 since like 2007, and I don't recall having a definite favorite before that.
Prior to high school, I would say the movies I watched the most were Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Spider-Man 2, The Mask of Zorro, Rocky, and Batman (1989)
