From like 2 or 3 it was The Wizard of Oz or Snow White, all day every day.
Around 7 or 8, I saw the Back to the Future movies. I loved Part II. We had to make an "about me" project in school and I made a video, for my favorite film section I used a hoverboard chase clip.
I was 11 when the first Harry Potter came out and then it sort of became a war between those and LOTR as they were coming out simultaneously. I still am not really convinced blockbuster filmmaking has since gotten better than Return of the King and Prisoner of Azkaban but then again I was the right age for those.
Then idk, I think probably I started to get into AFI lists and allowed to watch R-rated movies and things. I loved Pulp Fiction and The Godfather: Part II in high school. I thought I was pretty cool for watching Bicycle Thieves. I seem to remember considering The Deer Hunter the best movie ever made for awhile.
Then I just started watching everything desperately. I remember having "this is maybe the best thing I've ever watched" thoughts about The Passion of Joan of Arc, Children of Paradise, The Saragossa Manuscript, A Matter of Life and Death, All That Jazz, Dekalog, the short films of Don Hertzfeldt, Norman McLaren, and Kenneth Anger....in the midst of cinematic gluttony, I became more philosophical about my #1 and trying to boil down all my scrambled thoughts, I kind of decided Fantasia summed up the most things I love about movies. It's fantasy and music, comedy, dance, romance, strong light and color choices, dreams and nightmares, lots of highbrow/lowbrow tension. It's kitsch and Mickey Mouse but there's some attempt at abstraction plus like...Stravinsky. Anthology movie = my short attention span. Things like that.
So there was that and then I just got fucking sick of movies for awhile and stopped thinking about them so much. Now I have kind of circled back to The Wizard of Oz? It's the pure choice. I have never stopped loving it <3
