Glad to know they're not canning it outright and still plan to hold it later on in the year.

oh shit, I bet the other festivals will follow! it's the biggest film festival of the year. art films would not be easy to sneak into the oscar race cuz these film festivals are the only platforms they would expose themselves and get distributors With no promising contenders from movie festivals, I guess Tenet will be sealed for best picture of the year There is this: deadline.com/2020/03/cannes-coronavirus-film-companies-devise-contingency-plan-cancellation-1202885577/In short, the market for buying and selling is still planned by several companies, including (in alphabetical order): 30West, AGC Studios, Altitude, Anton, Cornerstone, Endeavor Content, FilmNation, IMR, Lionsgate International, Miramax, Mister Smith, Protagonist, Rocket Science, Sierra/Affinity, Solstice Studios, STX Entertainment, Voltage Pictures and Wild Bunch. "This is a non-exhaustive list and other companies are welcome and likely to join, we understand. The virtual market, which is only a contingency plan should Cannes not go ahead in the next few months, would take place in early May. The market, which is still being thrashed out, would include coordinated movie screenings, buyer presentations from filmmakers and talent, video meetings, and promo and sizzle reel screenings. The dealmaking wouldn’t be confined to agency packages and there wouldn’t be a registration fee to take part. It could also potentially include movies that are selected to take part in any scaled back version of the festival. Travel restrictions permitting, movie screenings could take place in cities across Europe, the Americas and Asia, or they could happen online. Multiple video conferencing platforms are being considered to host the online market. The idea is that if the coronavirus were to eat into film markets in the fall, movie companies could also revert to this virtual market then as well."

McQueen's got two films in competition? I don't even see them in his IMDb. Weird.

Ozon has been a Cannes mainstay for decades and has never won a prize - maybe this is his year?
Too obvious maybe, but Winslet and Ronan sharing Best Actress?

The two McQueen projects are just the first two episodes of his upcoming miniseries, Small Axe.

I could see Ozon, Vinterberg, or Hong all possibly taking the Palme this year, they're all festival names who have never won before. Naomi Kawase's True Mother also sounds like something that could make a splash.
McQueen having two films is fascinating, I wonder if he could win some sort of joint Best Director prize if they both get decently received? (Nevermind about "two films," lol, though perhaps he will still be awarded regardless since it's in competition.)
I can totally see Ronan and Winslet getting a co-Best Actress award, and I'll prematurely predict Wes for Screenplay as well.

There is some precedence for this - Isabelle Adjani won Best Actress for two separate films (Possession and Quartet) back in 1981.

I think it might wind up being a Carol situation, where one of them wins the prize despite people expecting a split. Ronan's got to have the edge, though, seeing as she's got two films in competition.

A reminder: predictions almost always should be made with the jury in mind. Spike Lee has been a juror before, and I'm not sure how opinionated he is, so it remains to be seen if he'll be laissez-faire like George Miller or rule with an iron fist.

They're not awarding prizes this year, are they? I mean, what's the point in having an official competition category if they don't? They just won't be presenting them in person.

I've read that it's mainly to do with giving films the spotlight. It's why most of the big films that were supposed to go Cannes (Verhoeven, Morretti) have chosen to either go to Venice or just delay until Cannes 2021.

Where are you finding this official lineup? Because everything that I'm reading just has a list of all films that were to be shown at the festival, and no lineup information.

I still don't understand how this is going to work and what's the official selection. In this link from the festival page there are different films from the ones mention above. Is classifiend in two sections: "The Faithful Ones" and "The Newcomers", both make a selection of 28 films....

It makes no sense. "Impossible to gather a jury"? The jury doesn't have to be in the same room, Thierry. They can carve out time, sit in their homes, stream the movies, and make their judgments.

The Faithful Ones are directors who have been there before, newcomers are self-explanatory. Everything I've read says that the festival is off, and the lists shown are just to give these films exposure. There is no competition slate.
