Was thinking about this topic while listening to this masterpiece for the millionth time:
Over 10mins long, feels only half it’s length and kicks so much ass. Any other examples?

Good topic!
On certain days (many actually) I will tell people that "Desolation Row" is the greatest song ever, by anyone. Over 11 Minutes.....while it plays you feel like it could go on forever and you lose track of time while it plays too.

One I'd also mention is the 9 minute+ live take of "Midnight Rambler" which is almost frightening in the live setting version and just keeps building and building in how intense it is. It even takes a break towards the end and then goes right back to that pounding rhythmic groove .......it's something else that song live.

Some people would say this is a no-brainer, all time top 5 and I'd probably agree with that and it's a weird one too - a song with great lyrics that you don't always listen to because the guitars are so fncking awesome .........a punk rock song that sounds like no other one and that was made in the era where long songs were completely out of fashion.

The first few minutes are like the musical equivalent of a contemplative, long take in a film that you can just bathe in and lose yourself. I can also just listen to Gilmour solo for hours.

At only 6mins it’s not necessarily a long song like the other ones we’ve been listing here but it’s the longest song The Clash made. It’s also among their best songs but like I said in another thread, there’s about two dozen songs you can say are among The Clash’s best.

Very great version of this song - they never get enough credit for their covers which almost all rule too (I Fought The Law, Brand New Cadillac, etc.)

The Bat Out of Hells have some fun ones. I love "Out of the Frying Pan" and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" never gets old.
"A Quick One While He's Away" in the same vein, basically six songs for the price of one.
My attention span is so fucked that it usually takes those sorts of medleys for something to really fly by, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant is another. There are some single pieces of classical, jazz, and film music that have so much variety or are so especially involving that I can hardly believe they run upwards of 10-15 minutes.
As far as longish songs that are simpler and suck me in riffing on basically one musical idea, I would probably nom "Hurricane" or this

Not THAT long but mesmerizing at over 7 minutes the update of this traditional song. Richard Thompson's guitar is amazing here and Sandy Denny's vocals are ghost-like and lovely. stephen is a fan and I think Martin Stett might enjoy this based on some things he's posted. This isn't my usual cup of tea but I have some different tastes yanno and I just posted Thompson's "Wall of Death" recently also............geesh.

I say this a lot - because I tend to repeat myself a lot - but Sonic Youth aren't a favorite band of mine - they are often tone deaf and not tuneful - where's the pop hooks? - a lot of noodling Art songs that drift on and on. I mostly like their "hits" (100%, Kool Thing) like a total mainstream loser.....but as a 7 minute single which is about a full 5 minutes longer than my typical Buzzcocks/Ramones attention span this goes by so quick and it could on forever too......and it's insanely catchy too - there's the pop hooks.....

I was in the audience for this, my all-time favorite song, and on my feet the whole time:

Not that long but its covers often are (Bloomfied/Kooper/Stills for one) but this song could go on for 20 minutes and that'd be right.....it's one of those songs which I can't really keep track of its length in this original version - it's odd like that.

This is a subjective choice because if you listen to the songs a lot you sort of get used to it and seems like a breeze.
The Sound of Philadelphia - MFSB. This a song I never want to end and goes by fast for me because its so alive.
Jump Into the Fire - Harry Nilsson. This obviously because of the iconic scene it belongs too. If you read the Wiseguy chapter of the scene, the song would finish about the same time you finished reading the chapter.

I really like this thread because it's basically just highlighting the best long ballad-y songs and those are generally some of my favorites.
Today I've been listening to Patti Smith's Horses and was reminded of one of my absolute favorites of that type and one of my favorites in general ... vaguely reminiscent of Velvet Underground but really there's something about this song (and this album) that's just pure original:

Not that long but it doesn't feel like 6 minutes at all......the weird girl I worked with years ago liked this song and used to smoke cigarettes in her car playing it. Some thought she was a goth.....some thought she was a vampire........some thought she was a murderess. She was cute.....should have asked her out .......possibly was worth the risk.

...which I think is her best song. I'm always amazed that 10 minutes have passed by when the song is over.
