To some people Neil Young is a hippie 60s dad-rock guy.......to some he's an idiosyncratic punk forefather. He's really just the guy who does long songs better than anybody - Like A Hurricane, Cortez The Killer, Down By The River and this among several others.
This song seems like hippie 60s guy .....except the music and solos which are downright sinister and ominous. Complex bastard.......

Van Morrison Madame George - nearly 10 minutes
Madame George a song so sad, it almost seems entirely improvised and not written - a song sung through Van Morrison rather than "by" him - he was only (I think?) 22 years old when this song went through him like a man possessed - about a subject he couldn't really "know" (a drag queen / transvestite - 50+ years ago so replace the term if you like - cast outside of love, life, and internal peace) ......that also was far outside Rock's boundaries of subject matter (except for the Velvets - and even they used it for sordid jolts).........
..........but Madame George his masterpiece album's, masterpiece song ........and this from a guy who had a couple prior (T.B. Sheets, Gloria).......a whole novel - or movie - could be based on this song.....several Rainer Werner Fassbinder films feel like they are....
If you play it at 3:00 AM in the dark you could ball your eyes out.....and that seems like too small a reaction........
