I never go by applause because I don’t think there’s any proof that it means anything. Like Good God brought up Stallone, a few years ago, and he got a standing ovation here but lost, or even last year Close got the biggest response but still lost. I do agree that Dern definitely has this now. Most pundits weren’t even picking Dern at the Globes because they generally go with the big star, and Dern has already won 4 times, but if she can win here that means she’s sweeping. Yeah, I think the only way Dern loses now is if Robbie wins SAG borne of the love for Bombshell or whatever, but that's very unlikely. Lopez is done with winning (not that I ever thought she had a shot).

I'm starting to think The Irishman/Scorsese are done. Not because it didn't win but because of the conversation around it. EVERYONE mentions the length and not as a postive. It feels like a film more people respect than love.
The Academy has gone for more showy direction lately so Mendes has to be the frontrunner. QT and Bong may be next.
What else will The Irishman win? Possibly Editing and Screenplay? I wouldn't be surprised if Greta won screenplay.
1917 and Hollywood have clearer paths to win. Plus, 1917 should get a nice boost from BAFTA and Hollywood should win SAG.

Mendes is NOT frontrunner. Bong and QT are considerably ahead. 1917 hasn't even released yet. The buzz will only grow. I’m still a bit worried because it’s such a short season, and with 1917 coming out so late, I wonder if it could still underperform. The wins tonight helped ease my mind though.

Nope, IRISHMAN is still #3, but it's (devastatingly) a distant 3rd. I think Parasite/OUATIH are firmly in front. 1917 is #4 AT BEST, slightly ahead of "Marriage Story". Why do you think giving your opinion is going to change anybody's minds? It'd be a lot more useful if you actually gave an argument instead. Spazzing out on the keyboard is his way of giving an argument.

Guys, what do you think Joaquin meant when he said: the boat has been rocked? I think he meant that Gervais had already called the industry out on its hypocrisy, so he wouldn't be the first to do it by pointing out that traveling by private jets is hypocritical of the environmental crusaders in Hollywood.

Looks like it's between 1917 and Hollywood for best picture. I wouldn't read much into the Golden Globe winners. Let's not forget that, since 2004, SEVEN winners of the Golden Globe for Best Picture - Drama lost the Best Picture Oscar to a film that was nominated in the same category. Seven times in fifteen years is something. And Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was going to win BP - Musical /Comedy anyway. It had no real competition in that category. Let's wait to see what PGA and BAFTA have to say, but I wouldn't count out The Irishman or even Parasite yet.

they didn't play off Phoenix's rambingly cringefest but now they're playing off Zellweger's classy speech? fuck off HFPA Cuz Phoenix actually DESERVED his award. Unlike Zellweger's hammy, facile, wholly unconvincing SNL Judy Garland impression. Even MORE dreadfully Dewey Cox-esque than Egerton and "Rocketman". This is why Joker fans are the worst.

Very balanced approach from HFPA. Congrats to all the winners.
The Irishman's fate will be the same come Oscars night.

Yeah, I know, I'm the only one here who cares about this speech but whatever... I totally relate to Hanks - I myself have been seduced by the moussaka and ouzo and I often wear light blue and white (Greek flag baby!!) AND I often break dishes just like the Greeks do ..............although that's mostly because I'm sort of clumsy.............Um

The SAG best picture winner could definitely surprise us all.

Reviews were great, but the social media audience reception bordered on catastrophic. "Boring" and "too long" became the buzz words around it. That is deadly, and there's little way it doesn't filter back to voters. There's a lot of denial that goes on when this is pointed out. Marriage Story's social media reception wasn't quite as bad, but again, a lot of memes mocking the quality of a key emotional acting scene between Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson was a warning sign that not everyone would be as reverent towards the movie as critics were. There are always a lot of tea leaves to be read during awards season, and people constantly try to deny the relevance of many of them.

We don't do it very often anymore... (Never thought Tom Hanks would try to find a way out of the Greek army...)

1917 over The Irishman???? Horseshit!!!! 😑😑😑
So happy for Le Phoenix! I kind of wanted Driver to win but you can't deny Joaquin 's greatness in Joker.
OUATIH is still overrated garbage but Pitt' s performance was the best thing about it so I don't mind his win that much even though Baby Yoda 100% deserved that award. 😁

Love Williams, but these pathetic self-loving speeches are becoming insufferable!! This was even worse than the Emmys one. And man hating is boring. Itsn't it Ironic that she left the school at 15 don't you think, so is the subject of Ricky Gervais Joke about Greta Gerwig (who left school at 16)
