You guys may be right about Kidman's Oscar chances (I think release date is more of an issue than tepid box office, which I think has become less important for prestige fare in the pandemic era ( The Last Duel was historically an all-time box office level flop, wheras The Northman is just a disappointment. It's not the same thing) .Things like King Richard were box office "flops" relative to expectation, yet still had major nominations (Best Picture) and wins (Best Actor). But yeah, being a "hit" helps your Oscar chances when you are an early release. I do think the chatter around her performance is intense enough for her to be remembered and pushed by critics at the end of the year. And she's Nicole Kidman. If she's in with a slight chance of an awards season berth, she'll campaign. It might be one of those things that just get her as far as the Golden Globes or SAG (places where she's more beloved than AMPAS), but I do believe she can have some sort of awards season impact with the performance, if the dice roll right. Another thinkpiece about her performance, this time from Vanity Fair. It's almost overshadowing other aspects of the film, so if Focus Features want to get some sort of awards recognition out of The Northman, she is the one it makes the most sense to push. www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/04/nicole-kidman-the-northmanHer raves are very strong, but it's also April. It's the same issue with Michelle Yeoh: people are creaming their jeans and calling for an Oscar nomination (if not the win) because the field is extremely thin right now because the year just started. And Nicole Kidman has missed a hell of a lot more than she's gotten in, especially for films that aren't the baitiest bait to ever bait. Whenever she goes off the beaten path to play with auteurs, the Academy rarely follows her. While it makes her a very fascinating actress in terms of building her auteur cred, the awards bodies are too basic to go anywhere near The Northman. She would have to benefit from so many other potential contenders falling by the wayside, and for the film itself to sustain itself through eight months of shiny new toys. What she does have in her corner is that Focus doesn't really have any other supporting actress plays unless Nina Hoss is great in Tár or if they wanna go for the Chastain afterglow nod for The Forgiven, but the question is whether they want to sink even more money into The Northman than what they've already lost.

Curious, would you support a possible nom for her? I can definitely see her ranking high in my own line-ups, though as you say we've seen next to nothing this year so far.

I'm of two minds on Kidman's performance if I'm being honest. Her big scene is that damn good and rates as one of the finest scenes she's ever done, but the rest of the film, she just doesn't register as much to me, especially in the film's first act. I plan on revisiting the film this weekend, so maybe the entire performance will click better knowing what is to come. I would support the nomination for the novelty of the Academy branching out of its comfort zone and because that scene is very powerful, but I wouldn't call it a snub if she misses.
