Maybe the worst poster of the year. How far Eggers has fallen… this is going to be so bad. Yeah so about that. Despite it being kind of obnoxious, I hope pupdurcs keeps on posting Kidman raves, just because you've been such a clown in this thread. How the fuck is it "obnoxious " to post raves for a performer in this movie on the film's thread? It's fucking completely relevant to this thread. . Idiot. Unless you have something useful to say to me, to quote Willard Smith, keep my fucking name out of your mouth. Because I'm not remotely flattered by you namedropping me with a backhanded insult to take shots at wattsnew, who is also an utter twat. But that goes without saying.

I don't have a good feeling about this film at all lol. Hope Skarsgard has some nude scenes though.

I worry that it might be too action-heavy for my taste. But if the story aspect is strong enough, I'm with it (and boo Eric Northman doesn't hurt).

Eggers' current position reminds me a lot of Sofia Coppola... A young American filmmaker who, after two wildly successful independent features, is given carte blanche for his most ambitious passion project. Needless to say, I can't wait to see what he has prepared for us.

85 on Metacritic, 90 on RT. Not a bad start.

Indiewire gives it an A-, calls it "a primal, sinewy, gnarly-as-fuck 10th century action epic."Collider gives it a B+, calls it "captivating."The Guardian gives it 5/5, calls it "mesmerisingly outrageous."Deadline's review is a bit hard to parse in terms of whether they liked it or not, but they did say it is "an enthralling immersion in a forbidding time and place, enhanced by an immoderately attractive cast and saddled only by a dramatic sameness that settles in after a while and gradually diminishes the film’s impact."BBC is lukewarm, saying it's not weird or violent enough.Slant concurs with the BBC, saying it "doesn’t lack for blood and guts, but it doesn’t play enough in the well of the weird."The Independent gives it 5/5, raves it as a "Viking epic of thick, blood-red brutality."

I might be the only person here who gets happy to see reviews saying it's not violent enough 😂
I'm so ready for this. The last Eggers movie I saw, I was alone in the whole damn theater and that was quite an experience. Loving the whole look and feel of this film.

I am surprised by the good RT and Metacritic scores. I was expecting this to flop lol.

I do feel like Kidman is going to be this year's Collette in Hereditary / Pugh in Midsommar: the genre performance that everyone goes crazy for and feels deserves a nomination, but it doesn't pan out in the end.

Any word on how the general audiences are going to perceive this?

Any word on how the general audiences are going to perceive this? I saw it today, and based on the audience I saw it with I think it will be a hard sell. Very divisive reactions from what I could tell. Small sample though.

If the movie was a hit I could see it but it being more or less a commercial flop combined with the early release date likely means this isn't getting any awards love. It's just hard for one scene wonders unless it's an awards juggernaut like Network with Straight and Beatty. I could see her being on the back end of my personal lineup, though.

This would be awesome, but unfortunately, they tend to love her more in baity biopic fare than in her more auteur-driven projects - Moulin Rouge! seems to be the only exception to the rule.

You guys may be right about Kidman's Oscar chances (I think release date is more of an issue than tepid box office, which I think has become less important for prestige fare in the pandemic era ( The Last Duel was historically an all-time box office level flop, wheras The Northman is just a disappointment. It's not the same thing) .Things like King Richard were box office "flops" relative to expectation, yet still had major nominations (Best Picture) and wins (Best Actor). But yeah, being a "hit" helps your Oscar chances when you are an early release. I do think the chatter around her performance is intense enough for her to be remembered and pushed by critics at the end of the year. And she's Nicole Kidman. If she's in with a slight chance of an awards season berth, she'll campaign. It might be one of those things that just get her as far as the Golden Globes or SAG (places where she's more beloved than AMPAS), but I do believe she can have some sort of awards season impact with the performance, if the dice roll right. Another thinkpiece about her performance, this time from Vanity Fair. It's almost overshadowing other aspects of the film, so if Focus Features want to get some sort of awards recognition out of The Northman, she is the one it makes the most sense to push. www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/04/nicole-kidman-the-northman

Also, interestingly enough, The Northman was #1 at the US Box Office on Monday (it opened at #4 at the weekend). According to this IndieWire article, The Northman may be that rare case of a word of mouth success that opens relatively low, but has legs. If it does continue to play like that, not only does Kidman's award chances increase, but so does the chances of the film itself.

Do audiences like the movie though, or do they hate it the way they hated The Green Knight? Modest B.O. bumps don't seem relevant to the Oscar race 6 months from now.

It's one of those things you have to wait and see how it plays out. See how it holds on it's second weekend and what it's legs will be, or if as you say, it does just turn out to be a modest bump. A better than expected box office run changes the media perception/narrative and that plays a lot in potentially getting a film like this into Oscar contention.

Oscar Novak, the actor who plays Young Amleth, was also Young Bruce Wayne in The Batman! He recalled Björn Andrésen in Death in Venice for me while watching - he's a very strong young actor!
