Post in this thread ASAP if you want to participate!!!
If we can get enough people for at least two teams, I'd be willing to lead one of them. But that depends on if people want to do it. Also, ideally we could remove some of these awards but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.
mostly copied/pasted from last year. 9 of the awards in the 10/5 range have been removed for simplicity's sake

For those of you who aren't familiar with how the league works, basically each of us will have a group of 4 films, 3 actors and 3 actresses throughout the awards season, and your contenders will receive points based on the points system below (that the captain(s) will regularly tally). The participant with the most points in the end wins. To determine the films, actors and actresses assigned to each team member, you need to follow these RULES:
SEND your captain 3 ranked lists of 32 films, 24 actors and 24 actresses (that are eligible for the awards this season), by _____November _____.
NOTES:
- The ballot distribution will work with a randomized order so that someone gets to pick his/her first film first, then the next person picks his/her first film unless it’s the same as the first person’s, in which case he/she’ll get his/her second pick, and so on. With the second, third and fourth films, a different person will get to choose first each time. Then we’ll go through the same process with the actors and actresses so we all have 3 different actors and 3 different actresses as well, and in a way that everyone is guaranteed at least one top pick (first, second or third choice). Hence why you all have to message your captain lists of 32, 24 and 24. If this still isn't clear to anyone I can explain it further below.
- You have to send your ballots by the deadline: if you don’t, you’ll be kicked out of the team (or whatever measure your captain sees fit). This may sound drastic, but all team members really need to be active because otherwise this league would have no purpose, and us captains thought this measure was the best way to ensure that from the beginning. If, on the contrary, you all send them before then, it would be nice because the captain could start the distribution process sooner (or have the live draft) and guaranteed to have everything ready by _____. This means your PMed ballot must be definitive, no corrections accepted later on. On the other hand, after the teams have been assigned, there's the possibility of you guys trading choices or picking up films, actors or actresses nobody else has, even when the awards have already started. See below for more detail.
TIPS:
When putting your ballot together, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Remember that whatever actor or actress you receive, you get them for all of their films released this year. For example, if you were to get Michael Stuhlbarg as an actor you'd get him for The Shape of Water, The Post and Call Me by Your Name, and any nominations he receives for any of those performances would grant you points.
- This does not mean you get these actors or actresses for anything else besides acting. They are only awarded points for their performances. So people like Margot Robbie do not get points for producing, nor Kenneth Branagh for directing. Only acting.
- Don't forget ensemble prizes go toward your actor/ actress as well. Last year, someone like Ashton Sanders or Alex R. Hibbert (or not) could get you a good chunk of points whenever Moonlight was nominated for ensemble prizes across the awards circuits.
- Another thing is always keep technical awards in mind with your films. They're not always the first ones we think of in terms of predictions, but Visual Effects, Sound Design or Cinematography Awards occasionally get recognized with critics and have whole guilds dedicated to them. So, say you have something like Wonder Woman or The Last Jedi as one of your films - expect plenty of points come time for the guilds and Oscar nomination day.
- Don't forget documentaries and foreign films exist, too. And often times get their own category dedicated to them. So, things like Faces Places and/or BPM could get you just as many points as one of those technical-savvy films.
- Also, don't forget that there will always be films in your league that could be picked up, like "free agents." So, say you look through everyone's teams and realize no one has Coco. Well, you may want to get that shit because it could get you a lot of points (not just for animated film nominations, but for song as well).
- This also works for “trading” picks. Say you can see into the future and know that Gary Oldman will in fact win the Oscar for Darkest Hour, but someone else has him, and you really want to get rid of Mr. Woodcock because he’s just not getting noticed by critics like you thought he would. You can attempt to negotiate a trade with another member of your team for their pick. Of course, they have to consent to it, and then both of you have to let the captain know that your player has been traded. Also, these trades can only be made from category to category. You must have 4 films, 3 actors, and 3 actresses at all times. You cannot trade a film for an actor or actress, and vice versa.
- People are allowed to make as many changes before the Indie Spirit nominations (November 21st). After that, only 3 changes are allowed per team, and that is until January 1st. This is to try and prevent the game from becoming a "first-come-first-served" game where whoever calls for a film first (for a specific award coming up) ends up winning. The date is also one where by then we should have a reasonably decent idea of how things are going, and if people have a film that's under-performing they should know by then; it also gives time, there's still a bunch of critic awards after that date.
- The awards that will be counted are those on the list. Any not on it will be ignored (unless given notice beforehand, such as with some of the critics awards). Please let your captain know if there's any award missing that you think we should consider that is not in the list, or vice versa. For the guilds, it is specified which ones are going to be considered.
- The most important thing is to just have fun, but be creative. You don't have to stick with what you've got. If it's not working; if you're noticing a trend with a different film; if something picks up speed, get on its coattails. The picks may have been about luck of the draw, but to win it's about strategy. So do your best, have fun and always stay active.
