I think she's genuine but the optics of it are awful: In general in the US climate change is a generational issue - older people don't care about it.......younger people care about it very much.......you're trying to persuade an older group of people and what you need is not a child (and she is a child) scolding them - you have to know your audience. In the US at least it panders to what the right says about the left........that they "use" children, or celebrities actually, to appeal to your emotions, not facts to appeal to your thought processes .........not saying that's the case here but it sure looks like it in the US at least. In a couple months that last speech is going to be meme heaven and you don't want people laughing at this issue

Honestly, I'm always suspicious of political stuff that involves minors. Nothing against her acitivism and all that, good on her for doing what she believes in. It's just that the whole thing feels a little manufactured and too manipulative.
That being said, I fucking wish I could get away with missing a bunch of school for 'activism'! Didn't really have that luxury.

I love her message, climate change is a hugely important issue, but yeah, scolding world leaders may not be the most effective way to go about it.I didn't love that speech as much as everyone else seemed to.But,she is a child,so I'll temper any criticism for that reason.

I'd be more concerned about her role if this weren't an issue we knew about with some certainly for over a decade and a half and yet have failed to address thoroughly. Issues need spokespeople and those spokespeople need platforms, that's always been the case no matter how calculated it seems.
I don't know if choosing her was the smart pick (she's popular among the converted but we should aim for someone more universal) and it's troubling to me that she is the star and not the message, but we'll see how it goes.
Hopefully she comes away from this relatively unscathed, but she unfortunately will have a lot of bile flung her way by the same kind of subhumans who were offended by the Parkland survivors telling them they didn't like being shot at while in school.

Poor girl she is an autistic teeneger, she shouldn't be used.- Is interesting what she said, but also is deplorable that politics as their pawn.-
I guess her parent like to cross the Atlantic with Pierre Casiraghi.- she is also our New Meme Queen

Oh honeys, it may surprise people but I'm quite interested in global warming, because I've found that hot weather tends to make my hair go dry & frizzy...
Greta looks the type that might have split ends, braids can be torturous for that.

I'd love it if any good came from this but I somehow doubt either your average climate change denier or the men in power who can actually do something about the issue are going to be shook up by an upset teenager.

Maybe I just don't care about it, and I'm not that old.
I'll deal with it when it comes. So instead of driving cars, I'll ride on icebergs. Raccoons will be 2 inches bigger. Dolphins will walk on land. Texas will be the new New York Atlantic Ocean coast point. Big deal. I may actually fight for my race when it comes time to. As of now, not much I can do... everyone I know drives a gasoline powered car. You give me a fuel efficient vehicle, I'll gladly say goodbye to gas stations for the rest of my life.

I think the girl's heart was in the right place, but I have to second mikediastavrone96's comment on how she is just preaching to the choir about this matter for years that more or less ever come into fruition.

world leaders absolutely need to be scolded lmao they are the individuals most responsible for allowing the phenomenon to happen. wish she was more harsh with obama and co but guess i'm too optimistic
also wish she was pro-nuclear. but shit for a 16 year old yeah she's doing great, hope she radicalizes further down the road and has more tangible influence beyond old billionaires virtue signaling

Oh, I didn't mean to imply she was skipping school for something else, I put that in quotes to emphasize that I had no opportunity to skip school for 'anything'. The quotations meant that the word could be replaced with any other non-school activity. But yeah, I guess it didn't come across that way in the sentence.

What do you want me to say exactly - that despite the intent this alone doesn't lend itself to humor, satire, unfair dismissal of her? Please......you can't just give the Right the material and then call it a smear campaign when they just play the material and snicker. That statement of yours made me sound like a Conservative dickhead btw - wtf is that about "you so often defend"? I defend the Right when they are defensible like any reasonable person would.......

I defend the Right when they are defensible like any reasonable person would....... this whole thing is like, "the science has said it will be bad and it will be bad for me and is already bad for people and it's going to get a lot worse based on what the science has said, and world leaders have demonstrably done little to mitigate it." i have no earthly idea how it could strike you primarily as an appeal to emotion if you aren't somewhat subscribing to rightwing think-tanks. you so often defend the right because that's what i see of your every post on here lmao, which i mean isn't surprising for someone who thinks being a lifelong democrat is a left position, but that criticism that thurnberg's approach (specifically thurnberg who has explicitly denounced being called a climate expert and wants tangible action as opposed to crocodile tears) is a "feelings over facts" thing is a blatant rightwing dogwhistle. the right is never defensible when it comes to their politics lmao

I like that you lmao to your own points (twice, um) but watching her video makes me lmao ........so different dog whistles for different folks, eh comrade We agree on some movies .......but this not so much - if thunberg has "explicitly denounced being called a climate expert and wants tangible action as opposed to crocodile tears" .............then she may want to avoid giving such speeches that contradict that stated intent.

You're the one who is using that catchphrase, I didn't.........not once. I'm not sure what we have to discuss further though, you see Greta in a way that I do not and you therefore think that makes me into something else that you can label me as but that I have never once labeled myself as. What do I need to resolve here (?)
