I watched a bunch of Depardieu last month - further proving to be a miraculously gifted actor, in my Top 5 ever, and there's much more to see, still.
And right now decently into a James Woods streak which may have just peaked with his intense, micro-suggestive perf in Once Upon a Time in America.

There's some voodoo pull that movie has over me, it's surprisingly smoothly made by Weir too, and fits into his pet themes of relocation and social paranoia with the immigration angle, though much more gently and warmly limned than his other movies, and the Depardieu performance is an utter affecting delight.

Awesome! I really do like MacDowell and think she can be truly great under the right direction. I'm really looking forward to the film now based on your recommendation!

I am doing a little actress comparison at the pacinoyes mansion between Liv Ullman and Gena Rowlands. I find them fascinating to compare - how many great Rowlands performances can you name away from Cassavetes? How many great Ullman ones can you name away from Bergman? How do they act differently when they are separated from them? They cover the same time period too.......each actress is the filmmakers alter ego (or feminine alter ego at least), both directors "made" their careers .........but you can actually argue held them back in a lot of ways too. So those two lately for me and when that finishes I can see the whole thing showing up for deep analysis in the TV/Stage/Film thread

Maybe the TV movies, those were never on my radar. And speaking of Woody Allen.... Diane Keaton kinda fits with them too as, at least for a spell, WA's counterpart. Except, she was able to do serious great work outside of their collabs -- I wouldn't argue if someone said her three best were Reds, Goodbar, and Shoot the Moon.

Stéphane Audran, the lady in my profile photo, as I‘m currently watching as many films by Claude Chabrol as I can get. She was his wife for about 16 years and they worked together on many films during their marriage and afterwards, too. Great actress. She died last year.

A general question for everyone - when you are really obsessing over an actor, do you try to make a point of seeing all of his or her performances nominated for major awards (Oscar, Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Emmy, César, etc.)?

A general question for everyone - when you are really obsessing over an actor, do you try to make a point of seeing all of his or her performances nominated for major awards (Oscar, Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Emmy, César, etc.)? I actually don't do this on purpose I think since it gives you a skewed version of the performer. Most really interesting actors - especially modern actors - from Denzel Washington to Sean Penn to Joaquin Phoenix tend to have something "samey" to their award nodded work - Success breeds success and familiarity breeds contempt .................and there's more interesting work somewhere else usually for me - I try to read a summary of a piece and go off what interests me in what I see. Then if I like it, I'll see more or all if it works out...... Not to be a bore (yeah, too late I know) but that's specifically my argument with my most beloved actors and how I first saw them - Brando, Huppert, Pacino. To me a lot of the most interesting Brando performances were in the 60s when he didn't have hits..........Huppert's "non-ice queen" roles makes you marvel at her more by seeing the detours and for Pacino well there are literally 5 or 6 different actors there just on film - who can compete with that - loud Al, quiet Al, blockbuster Al, HBO Al, indie Al, plays into film Al, Shakespearean Movie Al......he's too complex to get a handle on from just the award oriented stuff. He's amazing in that way and most people who don't think so........well they've only seen 1 Al I reckon. One thing I really try to resist is this "culture of success" - it bores me senseless and I think you can see it from my taste in music moreso and my love of artists who to me were great artists first and the success (or lack thereof) is a whole separate discussion.

Rarely, for me. As an example, two months ago I saw Ma which isn't good but thought Juliette Lewis was surprising and better than she had to be and then she popped up in The Act, again good work but a bit role, so I wanted to see more w/e stuff I've overlooked, like Kalifornia, specifically in that case bc Ebert called it one of the most "harrowing and convincing" perfs he's ever seen, which is some praise! (She's indeed phenomenal there.) Another I watched was Romeo is Bleeding bc I didn't remember her in it and wanted a re-watch of it anyway. So pretty much I made a list of her readily available movies - I'm hoping to get to more soon - but what wasn't on that list is the one pacinoyes mentioned today Hysterical Blindness which is her only Emmy nom! I just didn't think to look at her awards...!

Yes, I usually do that, though in this very case, not all of her films are still available.

Andie. <3 Has there ever been a more beautiful woman? I really liked Green Card, Mattsby ! A sweet, entertaining bonbon. I really want to re-watch Four Weddings and a Funeral. It's been close to a decade since I've seen it, too.

Marion Cottilard. I am obsessed with her performances in 2D1N, Rust and Bone and The Immigrant. The way she plays three melancholy roles so differently fascinates me. These three roles are roles that could easily be forgettable or repetitive, but Marion can play this kind of role with so many nuances that even though in all three she plays a depressing character she never seems "more of the same."
Joaquin Phoenix. I always liked Joaquin, but only after his comeback in 2012 did I really consider him one of the great actors of this generation. Even though he has delivered good performances on film such as Two Lovers, Gladiator, Johnny and June etc., only after The Master did I really admire him. The Master + Her + You Were Never Really Here combo are among my favorite male performances of the decade.

Update - my Woods kick went into Sept and amounted to 18 movies. Pretty big fan now and will return to the other stuff I haven't seen eventually. Did a deep-end dive into Cushing and Vincent Price last month - got to the point of sporadic youtube and google image searches throughout the day bc I missed them while I wasn't watching as many of their movies as I could. Can't wait until next October, I mean that literally , waiting isn't an option! Earlier this month tried a '30s-Bogart thing but some let down, so I'm about to either: catch up with what I've missed from Dafoe after loving him in The Lighthouse, go for a couple more Juliette Lewis's, or Anthony Perkins- I haven't seen his early stuff or the one he did with Ingrid Bergman, hmmm.... btw @tyler forgot if I mentioned in my review that the Object of Beauty is on PRIME!!! Andie's perf is among my favs I've seen this year next to Huppert in Malina and some others....

Oh honey, Gena Rowlands!
Unhook the Stars. is one of my favorites. That role is so... unmaternal and I just love the ending. Another Woman, one of the best Woody Allen dramas.
The Skeleton Key, loved her as Violet.
The only movie of hers I didn't like was The Neon Bible... Outside of the work she did with Cassavetes, it's a shame she was given so many supporting roles instead of leads... and didn't she play a bag lady or someone who befriends a bag lady in a TV movie?
Liv Ullman - I'm ashamed to admit I haven't seen any of her work, not even Persona.

Put me in the middle of that:
In all seriousness, in addition to being gorgeous, talented actors, they also seem genuinely sweet and intelligent - I love listening to their interviews.

Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Judy GarlandLast year I decided to explore the classic musicals of the 30/40/50/60s and ended up watching some of the main films by Garland, Kelly and Astaire. So far I've enjoyed everything I've watched, my favorites being The Wizard of Oz, The Band Wagon, Summer Stock and Swing Time. All the performances I watched from the three actors were good and several musical numbers were impeccable (especially this scene from The Band Wagon). It only bothered me so far the lack of variety in the roles of these three actors, Garland even varies a little from one role to another, but I think Astaire and Kelly play roles that look too much like their off-screen personalities. And with the exception of The Band Wagon and Easter Parade, the other films I saw from Astaire are very similar to each other, the plots are very similar. But watching him dance with Ginger Rogers is always worth it. Anyway, I still intend to watch the other films considered essential by these three actors that I haven't seen yet.
