Kevin Smith on Paul Thomas Anderson (specifically Magnolia): “I’ll never watch it again, but I will keep it. I’ll keep it right on my desk, as a constant reminder that a bloated sense of self-importance is the most unattractive quality in a person or their work.” Fun fact: he actually retracted this on a recent podcast he did right before he saw Licorice Pizza.

I didn't know he retracted the statement. Regardless, I still get a laugh out of when Jay and Silent Bob find one of the internet trolls whose handle was MagnoliaFan.

David Cronenberg on Stanley Kubrick: "I think I’m a more intimate and personal film-maker than Kubrick ever was. That’s why I find The Shining not to be a great film. I don’t think he understood the [horror] genre. I don’t think he understood what he was doing. There were some striking images in the book and he got that, but I don’t think he really felt it." Some more on "The Shining": "I thought that was a comedy, I'm sorry. I've never laughed so hard in my life." - John Carpenter (around 14:00) "I'm not a fan of The Shining at all. That's kind of masturbatory stuff, I felt. I don't find it scary, and I also found it—a bit obscure. I don't know what the fuck it was about!" - William FriedkinMore diss from Carpenter on other filmmakers:

Carpenter's best film, Halloween (which is undoubtedly a truly great film and a Top 10 in the Horror genre), isn't close to being as great as Altman's Top 5 best films. Also, his 2nd best film ( The Thing), is the only other film he made that even comes close to greatness. Whereas both Altman and Spielberg have each made at least 8 or 9 truly great films. So, puh-leeze: SHUT THE FUCK UP, CARPENTER!

The Shining is extremely funny and I pretty much view it as a dark comedy so that's not a criticism to me.
"Bumbling amateur" is much closer to being true of Tarantino than Truffaut.

Keep showing you know nothing about film. Q.T.'s 2 best films ( Pulp & Basterds) are better than Truffaut's best film ( Day for Night). And Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a masterpiece that's greater than every single other film in Truffaut's filmography other than Day. Now I definitely disagree with Tarantino's assesment of Truffaut (he was a great filmmaker also), but Tarantino IS better than he was.

Truffaut is OVERRATED AF. Day for Night and The 400 Blows are amazing, both masterpieces, but the rest of his filmography is a very mixed bag. Though Godard was even MORE overrated. Breathless is a great film, but the rest of his filmography?? WOOF!!

QT doing his pacinoyes impression by saying Hitchcock was hurt by his endings (usually he was, it's true) but I love him and QT doesn't so much ..........though he praises Suspicion and you get to hear his Cary Grant impression too....

Regarding John Carpenter, I can see why he'd think the likes of Cronenberg are pretentious
