Yes, I could see why some are comparing it to Spotlight, but just going by the trailer, it looks incredibly timely and relevant. I know that a late release hasn't won Best Picture in sometime, but I think it can ride its narrative to a win. We need a relevant, crowd pleasing movie. I'm so over these low budget movies that nobody bothers to see besides us win best picture.

Streep is in Best Actress quite comfortably, by the looks of it.

like Bridge of Spies, it will probably be too sanitized and innocuous, and like Bridge of Spies, it will have lots of awards clout.
EDIT: and it's not winning best picture, so everyone should calm down

This looks even worse than I dared fear. Melodramatic, all the drama feels super force self-serious, bombastic and manufactured, just nothing feels authentic or earned. Same with the performances, they're big, loud, take themselves super seriously and it doesn't feel like the come from a true, raw place at all. Obviously that's just judging by the trailer and this is basically all my problems with Spotlight and we all know how that ended so... Really hope this doesn't win picture or actress, but it's certainly a big threat.

Hmm, looks solid enough. Very disappointed that Carrie Coon clearly has the most minor of minor roles though.

It looks good. Well, screw Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, we need a Bob Odenkirk nomination!!!

Looks really baity. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are guaranteed shoo-ins for Oscar nominations though.

It looks fine, but it's all going to come down to the script for me.

The trailer looks pretty solid. I'm always very big on Spielberg's blocking and shot composition and this looks like it won't disappoint in those departments. Like with Lincoln and Bridge of Spies, I think the trailer is doing as much as it can to sell the showy Oscar moments and the film itself will be more nuanced from a writing perspective. Streep looks the best she has in years, the accent Hanks was doing threw me off at first but I quickly got comfortable with it and it went down smoothly on a second watch of the trailer, and Kaminski's lighting helps make the film's look set it apart visually from Spotlight (which I liked but looked like an early 2000s TV movie).

God, they're pushing the feminist angle hard with this one.
Streep better not steal Frances' Oscar. Regardless, I'm still hyped for Hanks and the supporting cast, even if the film itself doesn't seem all that remarkable.

This looks like the most Oscary Oscar movie to have ever Oscared.
I think there's a pretty good chance Streep will win the Globe. And if she gives another speech like last year, McDormand has some serious competition for the Oscar.
I could be wrong, but I'm also feeling like whatever wins Best Picture will also win Best Actress if it's going to be either Streep or McDormand... unless Dunkirk wins, which would make it more interesting.
I think the big question at this point is will the current zeitgeist surrounding the film be enough to compensate for the late release and propel it to a BP win?

I think the big question at this point is will the current zeitgeist surrounding the film be enough to compensate for the late release and propel it to a BP win? Excellent post. After the election results last night and watching The Post's trailer later on, I think Robbie could be a dark horse in Best Actress but probably will finish a distant third if not even worse against Streep and McDormand. I know things were very political at the Oscars plus the precursors last year, but with everything that's happened this year, it's probably going to be even moreso this year. So yes I think it comes down to Streep vs. McDormand, and whoever wins Best Actress, and that film will probably will win Best Original Screenplay too, wins Best Picture. McDormand and TBOEB have the edge right now because they've been able to do the festival circuit and build momentum, but yes Streep just needs one killer speech. It's possible McDormand wins at the Globes because they really loved McDonagh's In Bruges, but she's never won there before whereas Streep is the queen of the Globes. Plus, I bet that the Globes being the Globes hope for Streep to give another killer speech about Trump because of all the attention that her speech brought them last year. Plus, it depends on what's going on in a month, but with the whole Disney vs. the press thing and of course there's always Trump vs. the press thing, I could see the critics' awards perhaps sending a big fuck you by awarding Streep and/or The Post. Of course, there is the real possibility that because Spielberg set the bar so high and because The Post might draw a lot of Spotlight comparisons that it offsets any potential narrative of the "good storytellers" vs. "bad politicians". On the other hand, a month or so is a long time for Trump and his administration to fuck up even more which would seem to favor The Post especially if he starts to attack Streep and/or The Post.

I think it's always hard to judge by a trailer. But judging by the scenes we sae I get vibes from Lincoln and Bridge of Spies here and that's perfectly fine with me as those were two of the very best movies of this decade. The topic was always very appealing to me and I totally trust Spielberg with his direction but obviously it will also depend of how well the film is written if it can be a great film in the tradition of All the Presidents Men and Spotlight. But I hope and think it will. Definitely my most anticipated until the rest of the year.

Really loved the trailer - kind of surprised Streep is billed before Hanks… but that is a good indication of the MVP in this case I guess...
