Really hit me in the gut ..........it's something..........

Surprised that Night of the Living Dead and Scream aren't higher --
and surprised how high The Cremator placed not that it doesn't deserve it--didn't know it had the support! It's uniquely well made - the visuals, editing, music - and gutting, one of the major highlights of Czech cinema.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is not a horror film. Unsettling yes, terrifying, no. More like tantalizing, unless you assume some literal bad thing happened to the disappeared girls instead of seeing the whole thing as a metaphor for discarding repression, especially sexual repression. To see it as horror is to view it literally when you should be basking in its beguiling allusions. I know it has a creepy atmosphere but I'm surprised enough people viewed it as horror to get it to such a high ranking. Just one man's opinion. It wasn't on my list, and I agree. It's a great film, but it's more of a dramatic mystery with a lot of atmospheric elements that almost seem horrorish, but never quite reach that level. I can understand why somebody would find it scary though, it's more terrifying thematically, then a lot of regular straight-up horror films, I've seen.

I am always torn with Don't Look Now - I love so much of it but never got that ending (I get it thematically) - just it's the way it's done. I have come around to it over time but never fully .......expected it to higher because a lot of people love it so much.

Speak for yourself, I found it terrifying. Fear is the key to a horror movie and fear of the unknown and the unknowable is just as palpable, sometimes more. Also, there's nothing to prevent a movie from working both on a literal and metaphorical level.oh it works on every level. It's actually one of my all-time favorites if not my absolute favorite film. I guess I've never experienced being terrified by it though. It has some really wonderful creepy moments and that hooked me on my first viewing but it's not what brings me back again and again and again. If I had to come up with one emotion it makes me feel, I'd probably say giddyness. And although there's a cloud of horror on the thing, I don't see it as ultimately being frightening because casting off repression is a liberating act and I think that's what the film is about; that conflict between innate human nature and ingrained old-world persuasions. The missing-persons narrative makes for a beguilingly creepy atmosphere and Weir works that angle like a master, which is what makes the film so impossible to look away from. But I guess I can more than anything else relate to that sensation of leaving something behind that you have no use for anymore, and I think that's what the girls did. Not literally, that would be banal. But as a metaphor for that process I find the story just positively thrilling. I actually think it's the best example of a film working on both metaphorical and literal terms, because the story uses an unexplained and indeed unexplainable literal disappearance to examine abstract concepts, and the two levels are not just parallel, they're intrinsically connected and feed into each other. sorry for rambling. I don't get to talk about this movie enough

so many terrific picks in a row. Especially love The Witch, Wicker Man, Repulsion, Black Christmas and The Innocents.
shame Black Christmas couldn't beat out the vastly overrated Halloween though. Michael Myers is weak.

here's to hoping Texas Chainsaw makes the top 5 and beats out Halloween. Also, I love that we haven't seen Poltergeist and I'm hoping that continues

Said it before, to me The Exorcist still works as a drama - a story of a mother feeling helpless trying to protect her daughter - the actual scares have been blunted though - I just don't see it as horror now.
