For The Tenant -
Not just a terrifying movie but funny as anything too - you can read the whole movie as a symbolic tale, that you can't be too weak because the world will drive you mad.

Sheeeit, I totally forgot Fire Walk with Me on my ballot. Damn Letterboxd doesn't classify it as horror and I guess I just totally spaced on it -- oh well. Glad it still made it without me. Really strong results so far.

That shot from The Tenant is one of my favs ever, and that little scene is just amazing. pacinoyes is right, the movie is scary and strange but also hilarious - like the scene with the womens clothes - "I think I'm pregnant" - the cross dressing plays into the psychological transmogrifying but it's also a very funny piece of acting. Actually, people rarely talk about Polanski's acting talent......we don't know how much more active he would've been in front of the camera if his situation was different, but now we're off-topic!

Picnic at Hanging Rock is not a horror film. Unsettling yes, terrifying, no. More like tantalizing, unless you assume some literal bad thing happened to the disappeared girls instead of seeing the whole thing as a metaphor for discarding repression, especially sexual repression. To see it as horror is to view it literally when you should be basking in its beguiling allusions. I know it has a creepy atmosphere but I'm surprised enough people viewed it as horror to get it to such a high ranking.
Just one man's opinion.

Deep Red is of course a no brainer masterpiece and one of the great things about it is you can play it side by side with anything by Hitch, Polanski, Cronenberg, De Palma - any master and it fits in. It seems classy and classic but yet.......... it's got a creepy robot dude (wtf) and a truck running over a guys head (wtf again).
One of a kind film it is.......

Like comedy, it depends entirely on the viewer. I myself wouldn't necessarily define it as such on paper, but the way Weir shoots it and the prevailing themes that suffuse it make it an understandable pick.

Daaaaaaamn... thought my high vote for The Addiction might've bumped it into the top 50.
Some total duds -- Blair Witch, Hereditary... but mostly good stuff so far. Very glad It Follows made it.

Fear is the key to a horror movie and fear of the unknown and the unknowable is just as palpable, sometimes more. Also, there's nothing to prevent a movie from working both on a literal and metaphorical level.
