Yeah, I think we have different ideas of what a coattail nomination is. You keep mentioning that she’s was never a serious threat to win when A) no one is disputing that and B) it doesn’t necessarily make one a coattail nomination.
I gave you proof that she’s been a force with critics. Want more? She’s managed 222 overall nominations (industry and critics) per IMDB, putting her above the likes of Kidman, Winslet, and even Blanchett. My search of top prestige actresses only has Streep higher. More luck, I suppose?
Yes, I remember at one point back at the old boards Jennifer Lawrence was way ahead of everyone, and only behind Streep. Actually I just looked it up, and at least right now Lawrence is still ahead of Adams too in terms of wins with 117 wins and 178 nominations to Adams's 70 wins and 222 nominations. Streep has 172 wins and 357 nominations. Just imagine how many she'd have by now if all these organizations had existed when she first started acting, lol.
Not that these three haven't won some pretty impressive awards of course, but for me I would say that I would only count the NBR plus the big 3 top critics awards and some of the second tier awards that have been around awhile like Boston, Chicago, KC, etc. Of course, there's the Globes, SAG, BAFTA, and Oscar. Although I guess then I have to add in the Spirit, Gotham, and so on too, and then I run into the original problem of there being so many awards nowadays.
Also I just checked because I didn't think Streep had won there, but it turns out Streep has never been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. If The Laundromat's budget isn't too high, I imagine she'd be nominated. I don't see her winning a fourth Oscar this year, but imagine how mad Glenn Close would be if Streep won a Spirit award, and went onto win the Oscar too. Poor Close, but hopefully she wins an Oscar one day.
